Jenny Sanford granted divorce from South Carolina governor

(CNN) – A family court judge in Charleston, South Carolina, has granted Jenny Sanford's request for a divorce from her husband, Gov. Mark Sanford.

She filed for divorce last December, saying reconciliation efforts with her husband were unsuccessful after he carried on a year-long affair with an Argentine woman he called his "soulmate."

Jenny Sanford, who has been separated from her husband since last summer, appeared in the courtroom. The governor was not in attendance.

The judge said the divorce will become official at some point in March when the paperwork can be entered into court records.

Read Mark Sanford's statement after the jump:

Columbia, S.C. – February 26, 2010 – The governor simply stands by what he said in December, when he said:

"While it is not the course I would have hoped for, or would choose, I want to take full responsibility for the moral failure that led us to this tragic point. Jenny is a great person, and has been a remarkable wife, mother and First Lady. She has been more than gracious these last six months and gone above and beyond in her patience and commitment to put the needs of others in front of her own. While our family structure may change, I know that we will both work earnestly to be the best mom and dad we can be to four of the finest boys on earth.

"I will join with her in asking the press to respect our shared desire for privacy as we quietly move forward. We respectively ask for your prayers."

He reiterates that last point, in asking for prayers for he, Jenny and the boys – and again respectfully asks for privacy on these matters relating to the family.

David from CA – dont' be an idiot. The GOP has nothing to do with this. This was fully Sanford's fault. I don't blame all the democrats for Bill Clinton's issues...

This lady has a lot of dignity. Glad she went through with it. I am sure it wasn't easy with 4 boys to care for by herself. I doubt the "ex" will be much help. Now, if only Elizabeth Edwards does the same! Hope she can find the strength, too. God Bless both of these women!

Absurd that a judge must grant permission for one to divorce a spouse who has grossly and admittedly violated their legal contract through infidelity or abuse of any sort.

In the end, I suspect it was the lying that decided her on getting a divorce. One might forgive infidelity, but how can one get over the realization that you can't believe a thing your spouse tells you? There has to be an element of trust in a marriage, and you need to be able to trust that your spouse has YOUR best interests at heart, too. I don't see how a dishonest person like her husband could be capable of sustaining a committed relationship.

You people need to get your facts straight. (Not all of you, obviously.) The lying, cheating, dishonest GOP? The GOP made Sanford this way? Two words: John Edwards.

Christian hypocrisy? Yes, I have to agree with you on this one. But Sanford did it because he's a Christian?
    Two words: Tiger Woods.

Sanford was welcomed as a hero at CPAC? He was sighted at CPAC. He didn't even speak.

Sanford was wrong and an embarrassment to his family, South Carolina, and the nation. But at least get your facts straight and don't be an embarrassment yourself.

Is this the same Mark Sanford who a year ago was being touted as the next great Republican hope to be President of the United States?

I wish her the best it is a shame that her husband was not a role model
to his to sons its not about power that makes you a good role model
but treating other people including your wife with respect and not being
a coward and cheating I guess he could never fill the so called family values that the republican party kept preaching just another scum bag

Mark Sanford is a waste. I don't think much less of him than I did when he was elected. For all of you outside SC he remains our govenor because the lt. govenor is worse. Much worse. I am republican and wish these fools would stop preaching religon and start preching do what is right for our state and our country. He is the top of the heap when it comes to thinking himself righteous and actually being the biggest fool there is. We will just have to ride this out and ditch him on the side of the road. Not too soon for me!

This is just another classic example of the true, sickening, humiliating feature of the far right in the Republican Party. "Do as I say, not do as I do." I am happy that you had the sense to rid yourself of this oh so foolish politician. You and your children deserve so much better. I hope you find peace, solace and comfort knowing that there are many people out there who totally agree with you reject of the old Tammy Wynette song and are standing on your own. God bless you and the boys.

why would anyone spare any sympathy for this woman ?She married this guy knowing that he is a mean-spirited, right-wing bigot. My guess is that she is the same thing. All we know about her is that she is a rich, pampered, religious fanatic whose husband cheated on her. Big deal

This lady is a looker, and from all indications, a fine and refined person with moral scruples. God bless her and grant her peace, happiness and a great future. I think you did the right thing, Jenny!

I wish her the best also. She is such a graceful, classy lady. I am sure her boys are on her side.

Mark Stanford will never have a happy marriage, if he decides to marry his "soulmate". He will pay for what he owes. Once he comes down to the valley from up the hill of lust and passion. he will realise that it is life he repeating when he could have been starting to settle down to a peaceful retirement with his wife. BUT HE CHOSE TO BE A SCUM BAG!
