Jenny Sanford granted divorce from South Carolina governor

(CNN) – A family court judge in Charleston, South Carolina, has granted Jenny Sanford's request for a divorce from her husband, Gov. Mark Sanford.

She filed for divorce last December, saying reconciliation efforts with her husband were unsuccessful after he carried on a year-long affair with an Argentine woman he called his "soulmate."

Jenny Sanford, who has been separated from her husband since last summer, appeared in the courtroom. The governor was not in attendance.

The judge said the divorce will become official at some point in March when the paperwork can be entered into court records.

Read Mark Sanford's statement after the jump:

Columbia, S.C. – February 26, 2010 – The governor simply stands by what he said in December, when he said:

"While it is not the course I would have hoped for, or would choose, I want to take full responsibility for the moral failure that led us to this tragic point. Jenny is a great person, and has been a remarkable wife, mother and First Lady. She has been more than gracious these last six months and gone above and beyond in her patience and commitment to put the needs of others in front of her own. While our family structure may change, I know that we will both work earnestly to be the best mom and dad we can be to four of the finest boys on earth.

"I will join with her in asking the press to respect our shared desire for privacy as we quietly move forward. We respectively ask for your prayers."

He reiterates that last point, in asking for prayers for he, Jenny and the boys – and again respectfully asks for privacy on these matters relating to the family.

Ms Sanford, you are a tough lady. Showed a lot of class. As a Christian, hate to see anyone divorce but understand that it takes two. My prayers will be with you as you move forward. Wish you every success.

For Martin in Atlanta........Being Christian and wanting prayer does not mean that man is free from sin, or hypocritical by praying. As the saying goes, Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven.

no bonnie from sc...money wasn't in play here with a quick divorce. if you read the law it states that infidelity is grounds for a quicker divorce. again-not a money issue-but a legal one. read before you speak.

Don't worry about Governor Sanford - LOL - as if any of us actually are. His secret religious cult (The Family) on C street in Washington will take very good care of him. I sure wish someone would delve into that little den of iniquity. All of a sudden the news has dried up regarding C Street. It's very strange that a "secret" religion that influences many, many high ranking members of our government isn't being fully investigated.

Good for Jenny. The SC legislature doesn't have the guts to dump the guy because, if they are like the GA legislature, they are all having affairs with their legislative interns and lobbyists.

I've been divorced so many times it actually IS funny. Just because Mark Sanford had an affair (no, I never did) he's not a dirt bag.

He's a dirt bag because he plays off the well-known South Carolina ignorance and fear for political gain.

I think Jenny finally realized that the issue wasn't her husband's infidelity. It was his utter stupidity. You can make amends for unfaithfulness. But you can't expect an idiot to suddenly get some brains.

Funny thing about these southern, evangelical christian politicians; they cannot live up to the values they claim to have

As a fair minded conseravtive, I would have to agree. My only argument is your brush is too broad! Keeping in mind those who do live their principles NEVER seem to make the news or the ticker! We all paint with broad brushes and we are ALL wrong when we do it!

I am happy for Jenny. I wish her all the best as she ventures out to a new beginning. She is obviously a strong, intelligent, educated woman who will bounce back quickly. Too bad I cannot say the same for her ex. SC can deal with him for the rest of his term. Then let's see if his soulmate wants him after this scandal. It sucks to be you, Mark.

Hows that nonunion made Toyota workin for ya?
    February 26th, 2010 12:40 pm ET

She should go on vacation too and find herself a real man.

How's that non-union made Toyota working for me? In comparison to what? The decades of crappy cars produced by UAW in conjunction with the Big Three? Thanks just the same, I'll take my Toyota – even with the Dept of Transportation and Congress trying their best to scandalize Toyota by overblowing the recall....in hopes of helping the Big Three gain market share...sure beats trying to figure out how to monkey with the free trade laws....

Although Mrs. Sanford unfortuately married a scum bag, at least something wonderful happened during their marriage – their sons. He was unworthy from day 1, although he did let it be known to her that he was not going to be faithful. It's so sad what parents put their children through. Hopefully, they will learn from their father what not to be.
