White House social secretary to step down

White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers will step down.
White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers will step down.

Washington (CNN) - Desiree Rogers, the White House social secretary, plans to step down, three sources familiar with the situation told CNN Friday.

Her office came under scrutiny after a couple who lacked an invitation showed up at President Barack Obama's first state dinner.

Officials with the White House and the administration, as well as a colleague of Rogers, told CNN of her plans to leave.

UPDATE: In an e-mail to CNN's Suzanne Malveaux, Rogers said she is headed back to the private sector.

"It has been incredible setting the foundation for the WH for this historical Presidency," she wrote.

Read President Obama's statement after the jump.

Statement from the President and the First Lady on Desiree Rogers

“We are enormously grateful to Desiree Rogers for the terrific job she’s done as the White House Social Secretary. When she took this position, we asked Desiree to help make sure that the White House truly is the People’s House, and she did that by welcoming scores of everyday Americans through its doors, from wounded warriors to local schoolchildren to NASCAR drivers. She organized hundreds of fun and creative events during her time here, and we will miss her. We thank her again for her service and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

– CNN's Ed Henry and John King contributed to this report

If this is the same Desiree Rogers that once headed up the Illinois Lottery, then I'm not surprised by this. She handled the lottery wrong as well – good thing she married right.

I'll apply for the position, I'm out of work thanks to the Prez and his bumbling bunch of bureaucrats. I'm sure I'll do less than I was and make quite a bit more. Where do I send my resume'?

    HAHAHAHAAHAH.

That is great news for Barack.

Why did they ever put her in that position. She was an idiot and failed the Barack time and time again. She did not know her job and failed at her duties. She left her post numerous times and was unaccountable for her actions.

Good job, maybe they will get rid of Gibbs and Rahm next....
They are very bad at their jobs as well.
As dumb as the president looks, his staff makes him look incompetent.

Bet this won't be the last premature exit form this Whitehouse.

Ideaology semms to be more important to the President than competency.

I wonder if Desiree Rogers volunteerily resigned or was fired. We may never know the real story behind this sudden resignation.

Awww, bummer. She didn't like that she wasn't supposed to be a guest at the functions she was supposed to organize? Poor dear. It's about time – Just because you know how to attend parties – it doesn't make for a good party planner.

This is odd... you mean when someone is partying it up when she should be doing her job, resulting in the admittance of 3 different unauthorized individuals in close proximity to the president, is grounds for dismissal (oops... I mean "stepping down")???

Where's the EEOC, as clearly this is nothing but bigoted racism being exemplified by her employer. Who is her boss? Rut-roh... never mind.

    Wow,

What happened? Is it because she messed up the WH dinner when the non-invites got inside and she was sitting down eating instead of doing her job? Yea that's probably it......or is she iglooing the POTUS and First Lady Michele said to knock it off?

This is good. Now hire some competance instead of a Prima dona. Lets add some maturity to the group. She did a disservice to the President even if she is a friend. He needs fewer friends and more stability..

This is how Washington works. You hire your friend(s), not the competent. Then, after they screw up, you get them to "step down" so it doesn't look like you're a mean guy for firing them. Hope and change? More like bait and switch. It's the same old story with just a different cast playing the parts.

I hope another one is not hired. The Obama's have more staff than any other President and First Lady in the history of the United States. These people need to cut back on their lifestyle, just like most all Americans have had to. Enough is enough.

Will she also turn up in a few months like other rumors that several will be leaving the WH and returning to Chicago to start Obama's re-election campaign for 2012?

    She should.

By the way CNN, why aren't you reporting on Republican Senator Bunning blocking jobless and medical benefits bill extensions for unemployed. Millions of Americans are going to suffer even more at the hands of the Party of No.

Well you can't have lax security. Not for this President. I wish her well in her new endeavors. Sorry to see her go.

It is about time. This lady was more interested in socializing with celebrities herself than protecting our president. I did not want President Obama to win the election but he did. That makes him my president and I most certainly do not want anything bad to happen to him or his family. The outcome of this epsiode could have been a disaster. Thank God it was not.
