President's doc: 'excellent' health, cut the cholesterol

President Obama is 'fit for duty,' a Navy physician reported Sunday after Obama's first presidential checkup.
President Obama is 'fit for duty,' a Navy physician reported Sunday after Obama's first presidential checkup.

Washington (CNN) - President Obama got a checkup Sunday, and his doctor liked what he found.

"The president is in excellent health and 'fit for duty,'" Dr. Jeff Kuhlman, a Navy captain and physician to the president wrote in his report. "All clinical data indicate that he will remain so for the duration of his presidency."

The doctor did recommend Obama change his eating habits a bit. "Recommend dietary modification to reduce LDL cholesterol below 130," Kuhlman wrote. The report lists Obama's LDL level at 138. LDL, or low-density lipoprotein, is what's known as "bad" cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association.

Kuhlman noted that the 48-year-old president should keep up his efforts to stop smoking. Obama's medications include nicotine replacement therapy.

The 6-foot-1-inch president weighed in at 179.9 pounds with his shoes and workout attire on.

His body mass index (BMI) is 23.7. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that's in the upper end of the "normal" weight range. "Overweight" begins at 25.0.

The White House said Obama's doctor recommended his next physical take place in August of next year, when the president turns 50.

His wife is promoting less obesity in children and he is still smoking? I have news for him–more people die of the effects of smoking than from overeating.........it also makes you smell......he is also polluting someone else's space–

@sifto77: As much as I hate smoking, that's not true. Obesity causes a myriad of health issues that cost companies and insurers billions in premature disease and death. Do both: smop smoking and lose weight and you'll live much longer

Two comments about his physical. Is the doctor sure about the smoking therapy and nicotine control? Is he sure that it is nicotine? I think he is smoking crack when he comes out with his ideas for the country. The other question is, did they check his hearing? He certainly isn't listening to the American people if his hearing is indeed okay.

    Good news, Mr. President!

And to those complaining about his smoking habits, for everyone I know who has successfully quit smoking, it took awhile to completely do. My understanding is that the President has cut down a lot and is getting to his goal.

If he were a huge smoker, he'd never be able to work out in the gym and shoot hoops like he does (great way to relax and get goo aerobic exercise, BTW).

I am amazed that half of the comments are incorrect due to poor reading comprehension.

His doctor said he "should keep up his efforts to stop smoking." "Keep up" very likely means that he is not smoking and should continue to do so. Mama mia...

The message sent to the younger generation by this President is go ahead and smoke because his physician says he it "fit and healthy". Why is Obama still smoking? He doesn't believe all the medical evidence? This is the message he is sending to the youth of America. Or he doesn't care and is just continuing to smoke anyway? If he was able to lick the drug addiction that he had in college (for many years) with heavy drugs, on his own, with no medical assistance of any kind, to stop smoking should be easy for him.

Well, so he smokes. He knows he should not and that it is bad for him. That does not make him a bad role model for America, but it shows that the man is human and is struggling with an issue. I am sure we can all relate.

If he already has some cholesterol problems at this age and excellent life conditions, he is not in good health.

I find it interesting how the president's body has become public property. We can tell him not to smoke when he has one of the most stressful jobs in this country. Of course, smoking is bad for health, but he is human too. I give him an "A" for effort in trying to stop. Also, the article puts the president's BMI near the obese level. The problem with the BMI scale is that it does not take into account that muscle mass is heavier than fat mass. Our president exercises regularly and has a good amount of muscle mass. The slightly high cholesterol just shows that he is American. Our culture puts food in front of our faces that is extremely high in cholesterol and saturated fat. Even when trying to "watch our diet," it's hard to find foods that satisfy our American appetite. Singling out our president for these American habits is hypocritical. Now let's focus on what really matters: the important issues of our country.

President Obama, all the best in kicking the cigarettes. They really are a curse to humanity. I hope you succeed, for your lungs sake.

James, you're really dumb. Obama has 2 birthdays (one this year and one in 2011) on August 4th. That means he will turn 49 this august, and turn 50 in august of 2011. 48+2=50.

The report reads "Kuhlman noted that the 48-year-old president should keep up his efforts to stop smoking. Obama's medications include nicotine replacement therapy". That is "efforts to stop" which means that he has not yet stopped completely and as "poster less" said some people do indeed need to learn how to read.
