(CNN) - Gov. Bill Ritter of Colorado was hurt in a bicycle accident Tuesday, his office said.
Ritter was hurt shortly after 6 a.m. while riding in Denver, according to a statement from his office.
Doctors and nurses at the Denver Health Medical Center were treating the governor for several injuries, the statement said. He appears to have multiple rib fractures on his right side, it said.
The governor rides with friends two or three times a week. He was with a group of four other riders Tuesday morning when he and another rider collided, the statement said.
"The governor is in good spirits, laughing and joking with hospital staff and his wife Jeannie," it said.

And he doesn't have to pay a penny for his health care...he's got top notch health insurance paid by the tax payers of Colorado!
Get well soon Guvna.
I heard the bicycles involved were made by Toyota.
Hope his bike riding skills are not indicative of his skills to run the state.
Glad he's okay but there are so many Americans without jobs and healthcare they aren't laughing and joking with him.
Mr Bill Ritter, next time , pay attention
No surprise to me seeing the way he has been driving the Colorado Government into the ground.
I bet you Colorado is light years ahead of California in terms of bike infrastructure and motorist awareness. It sucks he bit it, but kudos to the Gov. for setting a positive example for fun, efficient, and CLEAN transportation! Not to mention the personal benefits derived from biking. (A smile. And a toned body)
