Top House Republican says Bunning's got 'a legitimate argument'

Bunning 'has a right as a senator to express his will and he has,' House Minority Leader Boehner said Tuesday.
Bunning 'has a right as a senator to express his will and he has,' House Minority Leader Boehner said Tuesday.

Washington (CNN) - The top Republican in the House is defending Kentucky GOP Senator Jim Bunning's decision to hold up legislation that includes an extension of jobless benefits until an agreement can be reached on how to pay for the $10 billion bill.

"I think Senator Bunning has - he's got a legitimate argument that he's making," House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said. "You know, the Democrats just passed this pay-go legislation and not – not even a week after the President signed it into law they want to exempt the first bill that comes across the Senate floor from the – from the regulations. And so it's - and he has a right as a senator to express his will and he has."

Bunning, who is retiring at the end of this year, said he doesn't oppose extending the jobless benefits program; he just doesn't want to add to the deficit. Democrats argue that, because the legislation is an emergency measure, the bill should not be subject to new rules requiring that legislation not expand the deficit.

Boehner initially dodged a question on Bunning, telling reporters that he has an understanding with his counterpart in the upper chamber, the Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky.

"I have an agreement with Senator McConnell. I don't deal with the Senate, and he doesn't deal with the House," he said.

Boehner did not answer questions about why House Republicans agreed unanimously last Thursday to the 30-day extension of the jobless benefits.

Boehner has no integrity. The Pay-Go rules do NOT apply to emergency measures, and this IS an emergency measure. Not to mention that it is only an extension of 30 days, so the funding issue can be resolved during that extension time. It isn't like they are continuing a program for 365 days without resolving the funding issue.

The GOP's plan for government is to run it into the ground, and then stand back and say, "See, government doesn't work." In reality, it is just government under the GOP that doesn't work. Clinton balanced the budget!

These Republicans truly amaze me. There worried about the American people – What a Laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can't find jobs but, we still have to pay bills, feed our children and try to keep a roof over our heads. Maybe what they should do to find money is tip into there retirement money. Since we as taxpayers paid it we should be entitled to some of there money. This Bunning will end up with a retirement pension of probably over $100,000. Not bad.

Wake up Americans and see what this party is doing. They have NOT tried to help the President in any way. Just knocking him in all directions. SHAME ON THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leave it John Boner to support an idiot. One idiot to another, or maybe dumb and dumber. Get rid of all the republicans. They don't care about the American people who are hurting, all they care about is politics. Bunning will gone anyway because he's quiting so lets concentrate on getting rid of bonehead Boner.

What can you say, an illegitimate response from an illegitimate Senator. Republicans couldn't agree on whether to run out of a burning building or not. They would block the exits until someone could show them why they shouldn't stay inside.

HHHMMMMM..........naw that would be inhumane even though they would do it to their own constituents.

This is our government in action. Attempt to determine how we will pay for another entitlement and get your head 'blown off'. These unemployment benefits have been going on for more than a year, not only do these out of work americans get paid to not find a job, but also have their insurance premiums paid thru COBRA Welcome to the Nanny state. I know plenty of people who are unwilling to give up any offer of work that may not be equal the total $$ benefit paid (like contract work) because they will have to refile for their unemployment bens and their COBRA pay outs. That is just way too difficult and they do much better financially by doing nothing. This is nuts, and soon is the time to force people to become innovative and get going. Just sitting around collecting from 'the state' is really pathetic.

A legitimate argument? Try to explain that legitimate argument to a mom that is using that check to put food on the table, to pay for the mortgage, to pay for the utility bills, to pay for a doctor's visit . Republicans are just insensible.

Boner is a disgusting individual in his own right. It doesn't surprise me to see him defending Bunning. They are two peas in a pod. Thanks Ohio. You and Kentucky deserve each other. Unfortunately, the rest of us have to put up with your stupidity.

Hell yes he's got a beef. Who's watching the ACORN folks on unemployment? How many cheats are there on unemployment? By the way I'd turn in a tax cheat for money. Here's one. Tim Geithner. Send me my reward. Here's a bigger one. Barrack Obama. He's been cheating people out their tax money every since he took office.

The tanning tub congressman is the house Bunning. This country will never advance as long as Politicians like Boehner and Senator McConnell continue to hold the GOP hostage for big buisness and lesser educated constituancies their states will continue to be suppressed. Term limits and start taking away freebees ie medical, offices and pay as you go would be a good start.
