Washington (CNN) – A Utah congressman wants delinquent Capitol Hill staffers to settle up.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, is set to introduce a bill Thursday that targets Congressional employees with unpaid taxes.
"It's pretty hard to find anyone who would disagree with this legislation," Chaffetz told CNN. When asked if his own staffers are current in paying their taxes, he indicated he had talked them before putting the bill together. "I hope they are all in compliance."
Rep. Chaffetz also said he wants to "model this after the IRS," which the Utah Republican says has the highest compliance rate in the federal government for employees paying taxes.
Chaffetz told CNN he got the idea for the legislation after he heard President Obama's remarks at the January 20 singing of a directive that blocks tax-delinquent companies from obtaining government contracts. At the time, Obama said "it is simply wrong for companies to take taxpayer dollars and not be taxpayers themselves."
According to Chaffetz, there are currently hundreds of Hill staffers with unpaid taxes. For the 2008 tax year alone, the freshman congressman estimates a total of $8 million in unpaid taxes owed by congressional employees.
So they're targeting the whole of the 0'bama admin??
From what has been reported in last couple of years, I think a large chunk of the national debt could be retired if the IRS performed a comprehensive tax audit on each and every one of the gang of 535, their appointees and staffers! Add in the lobbyists and the country would likely be debt free and running a budget surplus. We could actually be in a position to lend money to the Chinese!
every should pay their taxes according to the tax laws.
The appalling thing is the number of congressional staffers there are to begin with. Just the staff of Congress is bigger than most governments on earth. They are a world unto themselves, all catering to every whim (in fact creating a bunch of whims) of the royalty that calls itself Congress.
Our Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves at the number and power of these unelected potentates.
I cannot believe that we have people in our government telling us that we need to file and pay our taxes and they have unpaid or have not filed their taxes – how unfair is that? I don't buy the excuse that "I forgot to claim that" or "I forgot to file my taxes". I think all of the deadbeats in Washington, DC need to live by the same rules that we do and pay up! I'm wondering how much money we will have if all of the representatives, congressmen and senators pay what they owe in taxes?
I think this bill is a more important first step for this country than the never-ending drive to take federal control of our health care dollars.
FANTASTIC! Both sides will have a hard time with this because staffers and legislators both use tax loopholes. This poor guy will have a hard time because his party will not be too happy with him. The people will be with him though. But since we are now a country of, by, and for the corporation I'm not sure this will make it out of the sub, sub, sub...buried deep, sub-committee.
GO FIGURE!!! I guess were finally starting to hear what goes on behind closed doors. See it goes to show you. The truth always comes to light. Smh
Jason do you have good Health Insurance for you and your family?
Sounds fair to me. If the President doesn't think companies should take government money while not paying taxes, he should be on board too. Let's see what happens. Perhaps Representative Rangel has an opinion on this legislation too.
Why do Republicans always oppose helping people......?.. They opposed Social Security..because it was Socialist.. they preferred the county Poor Farm orhave people live with relatives when they got older...They opposed Medicare.. it was Socialist... Instead they love the Private Health Insurance government with all their regulations and Pirvate Health Insurance Taxes which go up every year by 20-40%... Yes Private Health Insurance companies are a government .. They govern us..
Why do politicians keep trying to raise our taxes when they won't even pay their own. We should have a policy that says you can't run for office or work in a federal job until you've paid your taxes.
How do they get away with not paying their taxes?
John Q. Public has to have theirs paid by April 15. If these people whom we pay their salaries are late then they should be fired at the polls come election time. Are an alternative to that a bill passed that they automatically resign when failure to pay on time.
This should not even be a problem to begin with. Alarm bells should be going off right now! They have talked about this for years and done nothing while the public pays their taxes. We are looking at the biggest tax increases in history and they have to pass a special bill to make themselves pay. STOP THE SPENDING NOW! FIX THE PROBLEMS FIRST.
