A spokesman for Marco Rubio says the Senate hopeful, pictured, never charged a back wax to his Republican Party of Florida credit card.

(CNN) - Florida Senate hopeful Marco Rubio never charged a back wax to his Republican Party of Florida credit card, his campaign spokesman told CNN Tuesday, rebutting Gov. Charlie Crist's curious allegation about his Republican primary rival's grooming habits.

So what exactly did Rubio put on his tab during his $134 visit to an upscale Miami salon when he was Florida House speaker?

Rubio's spokesman Alex Burgos has the details:

"Marco paid $20 for a haircut with a razor on the neck, and he bought some items that went into a silent auction, including gift certificates," he said.

Burgos said the salon in question, Churchill's Barber Shop, sells "travel kits and other gift sets that people usually buy around the holidays as gifts."

After details leaked last month about thousands of dollars worth of questionable charges on his party-issued credit card, Rubio said he paid off the personal charges – including his salon visit – with his own money.

As for the back wax claim: "Charlie Crist's obsession with making up things about other people's grooming habits is bizarre for anyone, especially the sitting governor of Florida," Burgos said.

"It's also a shame he cares more about what's in Marco's personal bills than what's in the stimulus bill he supported."

Really?   March 10th, 2010 2:09 am ET

This is news? Really? Shouldn't they be trying to fix health care or something? Instead of this crap...

Albert R. K. . L.A., CA   March 10th, 2010 1:43 am ET

This kid has no real-word work-experience or life-experiences. He went to school and soon thereafter sold himself to the public as being able to represent them and has been in poltics ever since. In Alaska they have Sarah Palin who also has no real substance to tell why she should ever have been elected for office. Voters should ask themselves, "How does this person "represent" me? What do they know about my life and what I need? Too many people in politics get elected because of the smile they offer rather than sunstance and real-life experences. The older I get I really have to wonder what makes some of these kids, who are fresh out of law school, think they are leaders. Law school is not that big of a deal! They really need to get over themselves, but more importent than that, the voters need to respect themselves more and vote for people who know what their life is about from having lived it and "worked" their way up. We do not need the kind of person who spends so much of other peoples money on what they want and when they get called on it try to make it sound like they did for someone else (it was a gift). From my life-erperences I have learned to stay away from that kind of person, and believe me. there are many of them in law school.

Republicans Are The American Taliban   March 10th, 2010 1:01 am ET

Where are the $150,000 in designer clothes that Sarah Palin said she would donate to charity???

john thein   March 10th, 2010 12:58 am ET

Republicans seem to be coming out of the closet everyday. Their built up anger about gays is because maybe there is a little gay inside of them waiting to come out. Hypocracy is an interesting part of life for republican politicians.

Aaron   March 10th, 2010 12:52 am ET

I have to go with Charlie on this one. Rubio looks like he'd need a back wax.......with lots and lots of wax to get the job done.

Bob of Lompoc   March 10th, 2010 12:42 am ET

Mr. Rubio, you have been outed. As Governor Arnold would say, "Don't be a girly guy"!

"After details leaked last month about thousands of dollars worth of questionable charges on his party-issued credit card, Rubio said he paid off the personal charges – including his salon visit – with his own money."

In other words, he paid up AFTER he got caught?

Sai   March 10th, 2010 12:18 am ET

So he didn't pay for a wax, he just paid for the same service to be done with a razor blade, gotcha. Glad we got that out of the way, good to know. Who is paying for this guy's haircuts and gift binges with this republican credit card business? Haven't we learned what credit cards do? Take a look at 2009.

Kathleen   March 10th, 2010 12:16 am ET

Marco Rubio is running in a "retirement" state! And he was "approved"
by the standards the Republicans want in a candidate.

Most Republicans don't like "entitlements". Wonder how that will sit with RETIRED FLORIDIANS????

I don't think sooooooooooooo!

caron   March 9th, 2010 11:48 pm ET

Now this is funny! Don't know if I quite believe the 'items went to silent auction'...To me it makes it sound worse. Sounds more like birthday or Christmas gifts!

mrbzr1   March 9th, 2010 11:33 pm ET

OMG, back waxing? has the media ran out of real crimes regarding elected officials? what about the tax evading, special interest bribes by the likes of rangle? or peloci's husbands comany getting contracts, or her nephews company getting contracts from government? are those not worthy stories? what about the 100+ companies that she claims on her w-2 as sources of income? guess back waxing is horrible, but is it really the worst that is being commited by republicans?

Gpenn   March 9th, 2010 11:22 pm ET

The fact he had to defend such a ridiculous claim is the fault of the media for not doing their job. Crist is desperate and will say anything. It's up to the press to verify the facts before they post such claims. Instead they run it and make it easy for Crist to get away with these types of claims. The PRESS NEEDS TO START DOING THEIR JOB.

The sad thing is, that political rivarly seems to think the best thing to do is 'just put it out there' whether it's true or not....but Citizen Joe and Josie's are on to this..so in the end the messenger looses creditbility.

Again, politicans need to understand..people want intelligent dialogue..not garbage talk. Stick with 'REAL' issues.

Minnesota gal   March 9th, 2010 11:01 pm ET

Well since he was using the republican credit card for his own personal use, all they have to do is look at the charges. If it is on there. He needs to tell the truth. If it is not Crist or whomever said he did should apologize.

But I don't see how he can honestly talk to the people of Florida about the job he wants when he illegally used that card for the other personal items.

Ken in NC   March 9th, 2010 11:01 pm ET

WAKE UP RUBIO AND SMELL THE COFFEE. YOU ARE IN THE BIG LEAGUES NOW. People will want to know everything you do. They want to know what you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, how many afairs you are having or have had and even how long you sit and squat. Nothing in your life is private any longer. The public and the media will even keep tabs on you while you hike the tails of Argentina.

Tony   March 9th, 2010 10:58 pm ET

"The stimulus bill he supported."

How very charming to reap the benefits of the stimulus bill (an economy not cratering) while bashing it for political gain. Must be nice being in the party that doesn't have to make any of the hard choices.

Kelly   March 9th, 2010 10:41 pm ET

Rubio looks like a body-waxing kind of guy, honestly. But, while were on the subject, what's going on with that bizarre part that's a quarter of the way down the left side of his head? And why is the bottom of his ear so much lower than his lower lip? Can he fly with those ears? Was this guy raised near some sort of nuclear site?

Felonious Monk   March 9th, 2010 10:32 pm ET

So let me see, he purchased items with his Florida Republican Charge Card that were not back wax related. Of the items purchased, what exactly is the ethical difference between buying a back wax and these other items his constituents don't need, or know about?

6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other...

Tom   March 9th, 2010 10:26 pm ET

who really cares what he spends his money on. what should be of concern is what congress is spending money on. we need to cut up their credit cards and be done with it

Arlando L. Cantley   March 9th, 2010 10:19 pm ET

It's good to hear Marc Rubio gets his back waxed. I'm sure his wife appreciates that. When I lose weight and in shape as he is, I would do it too. BUT, NOT WITH THE GOP'S CREDIT CARD. Who does he think he is Sarah Palin? But, Governor Crist should avoid anything that is going to bring up the gay-issue right now. He needs to wait until he is re-elected cause the GOP doesn't do that gay-thing publicly. Wait, Rep. Ashburn is coming to mind. I think the GOP has just plain given up on at leasting trying to hide being seen as hippocritical. What do they have to lose with the gullible supporters they have?

Back wax? Bizarre, yes, not to mention hilarious!

Doug   March 9th, 2010 9:28 pm ET

I guess there really is no bottom to the depths of politician's stupidity.

And of course the media misses the real questions that might offer any insight into the personal ethics of these two yoo-hoos: Why are you, Mr. Rubio, charging personal grooming on a "company card"? Did you send your reimbursement check immediately or only after questions started leaking? Mr. Crist, do you also have any credit cards other than personal and state-issued ones and when can we begin reviewing your
statements?

Ender   March 9th, 2010 8:54 pm ET

LOL

I LOVE how the republicans mince words.

It doesnt matter if his back was waxed, he cut his hair or he bought corn meal.

The fact remains that he used funds given to him inappropriatly and then ran around campaining on his "fiscal conservativism".

The man is like MOST republicans.

He is NOT conservative.

The FACT of the matter is, you republicans want the DEMOCRATS to be conservative while you want to be able to borrow and spend anytime you see fit. Which is pretty much EVERYTIME you get into office.

So please, stop claiming to be "conservative" already. Your actions show you to be nothing of the sort.

John Smith   March 9th, 2010 8:53 pm ET

This is news???? If this is the kind of thing either party is worrying about, then the entire lot needs to be fired and replaced with people who are actually going to tackle real issues like health care, education, balancing the budget or the like. $134 for a back waxing seems incredibly trivial!

Texas Jack   March 9th, 2010 8:53 pm ET

There you go. More lies from the Jacks of the White House. They are the team of change. But yet I see nothing that has changed except the national debt and their hatred for our military. I am so sick of these immoral pigs i could go outside and upchuck. To think I was one for fifty years. How could I have been so ignorant in not knowing WHAT they were becoming. With the Election of the Kennedys I should have known. They are at the top of the immoral heap pile. This country has done nothing except try to destroy the constitution since under their office holders. BUT NO MORE. WE ARE PUTTING THE FIGHTING GIRL INTO OFFICE, PALIN, WHO WILL RID THIS COUNTRY OF THESE PIGS. PEOPLE IF YOU'RE ONE AND HAVE A COUNTRY TO RETURN TO I'D ADVISE YOU TO START THE OUTPROCESSING. Kenney of Golden, CO   March 9th, 2010 8:39 pm ET

And the Florida Senator hopeful thinks that it is acceptable to put his $20 haircut on a credit card other than his own. And I wonder whom those supposed gift kits and certificates went to. If he can put his hair cut on that credit card why not future back waxes paid for with a gift certificate?

Mr. Alex Burgos knows very good and well that Mr. Marco's assertion to be a fiscally conservative is backed up with actions taken by Mr. Marco in his handling of financial matters with non-personal credit cards being used for personal privilege. It speaks directly to the fiscal character of this candidate. It is not the grooming habits of this Senator hopeful that Gov. Charlie Crist is pointing to, but it is about how Mr. Marco spends NON-PERSONAL monies. Just think of what he'll spend as a Senator while the citizens of Florida struggle.

Politics in America today is TWISTED and non-representative.

CNN Obsessing with GOP   March 9th, 2010 8:34 pm ET

The news should be regarding rahm's forcing votes (not allowing representatives to vote their constituent's), not waxing backs!

Lou Az   March 9th, 2010 8:31 pm ET

At least he is not a hipocrat that didn't support it, but took the money.
As a democrat I prefer Charlie.

star555   March 9th, 2010 8:23 pm ET

I do not care if he gets waxed, gets a hair cut, or a tatoo as long as taxpayers do not pay for it. We should not have to pay for these very personal items.

Tammy   March 9th, 2010 8:22 pm ET

Thousands of dollars on his party issued card? Obviously the card was used for personal things he couldnt afford or WHY? would he use the card in the first place and then pay it back with his personal money later? Just wondering if he paid it back when caught and how many others are doing the same thing.

John   March 9th, 2010 8:21 pm ET

This is getting ridiculous. WHO CARES!!!!

bk   March 9th, 2010 8:21 pm ET

Rubio charged personal items to his GOP credit card for one of two reasons. 1 – he didn't have his own credit card or, 2 – he thought he'd get away with it. As someone who has experience auditing expenses, my guess is #2.

Back waxing, whether charged to the Party or paid for with personal funds, should disqualify any Republican from a GOP primary. God made body hair and God makes beautiful things. To remove one's body hair thru wax clearly shows hatred for God's creation. If Rubio hates God that much, who knows what he would do once in the Senate. We need a Christian Party in this country as God-fearing evangelicals like myself have no one to represent us - and ban those salons and jail those eveil persons who remove body hair. God said so.

JT   March 9th, 2010 8:03 pm ET

Republicans in Florida need to wise up about this guy Rubio. They don't know him and letting the crazies in the tea party could lead to the first time in years where the Florida Sneate seats both go to democrats.

Pragmatic   March 9th, 2010 8:00 pm ET

However Rubio is involved in the Sansom scandal in Florida. Rubio says Sansom, who was indicted for routing $35 million dollars to a Florida college... without permission. Rubio maintains that Sansom "is one of the best people I have ever interacted with in the legislative process" ... after personally selecting Sansom as the person responsible for the state budget when Rubio was the speaker.

Slimy? Corrupt? Not a good judge of character? Not paying attention to details? None of the above is a recommendation for an elected official!

Jim   March 9th, 2010 7:32 pm ET

Making up things and majoring in the stuff that doesn't matter is what the party of fear and lies does best. Isn't trying to smear someone with lies a longstanding part of their strategy? Do or say, "Anything for power"! Disgusting.

Does it drive anyone else crazy that Rubio is hitting Crist over his support of the stimulus bill? Almost any economist you talk to will tell you the stimulus is having a good impact on the economy. You can google the information if you don't know what I'm talking about. And does it drive anyone else crazy that all Republicans do is bend the truth and lie and yet they're still a viable party in this country? I just don't get it.
