Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid criticized the Republican National Committee Tuesday for likening him to Scooby Doo.

Washington (CNN) – When it comes to raising money, Scooby Doo is on the minds of Republicans and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Reid criticized the Republican National Committee Tuesday for likening him to the cartoon dog, although the Nevada Democrat acknowledged having a soft spot for the dimwitted, four legged detective, in a new email fundraising pitch.

"It's been a long time since I watched cartoons with my kids, but I recall Scooby Doo as a pretty good character," Reid wrote in the note sent to supporters. "He solved mysteries and caught the bad guys, pretty impressive - especially for a dog. But you know, it's true what they say: politics is a very rough business."

Reid is referring to a recent RNC fundraising presentation that compared Reid to Scooby Doo as well as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to cartoon villain Cruella De Vil and President Obama to Batman's nemesis, the Joker. The presentation came under fire from Democrats and Republicans for being in poor taste and RNC Chairman Michael Steele was forced to distance himself from it.

"I'm making light of this RNC presentation, but it's really not funny," Reid wrote in the email. "Using fear to motivate supporters is cowardly politics. Moreover, it's an admission that Republicans have no platform to run on other than saying 'NO' to just about everything, and obstructing change that Nevadans, and Americans, deserve."

Reid, who public polling shows is fighting for his political life, asks for a "small online contribution" and emphasized that the GOP sees him as a top target to try and defeat in November. He includes the RNC's side-by-side cartoon depictions of himself and Scooby Doo in the fundraising email.

Typical Republicans, it's a sad day in America when our elected leaders have to stoop to lies and name calling, to try to make them selves look good, Harry is better then any one the Republicans, at least he's got ideas, that's better then none at all, DUH!

Ken   March 9th, 2010 9:07 pm ET

This is not cool in the slightest!! How dare they compare Scooby Doo to to that wimp.

Texas Jack   March 9th, 2010 9:02 pm ET

LORD please help me. I am so sick of this man's face along with Pelosi's, OBAMA's and Bdens. Please is ther someway to educate the Americans that these people will destroy our way of life. Get rid of the ACLUs, Democrats and the Spanish organizations with the NAACP>

lulu   March 9th, 2010 8:32 pm ET

Fear, hate & negativity might work for the RNC if it were done more cleverly & professionally. This was a hack job.

Waldemar Sanabria   March 9th, 2010 8:24 pm ET

Republicans claim Obama is arrogant.

Arrogance is losing the election and still claiming to represent the American people. Arrogance is running the country to the edge of the cliff and then expecting us to give them the power back so they can finish the job. Arrogance is assuming that you can switch positions on everything and no one will notice. Arrogance and hypocrisy are the defining characteristics of the 2010 Republican Party.

Scott, Tucson   March 9th, 2010 8:21 pm ET

Okay...toss Harry a Scooby snack and send him back to Nevada for good.

indiana voter   March 9th, 2010 8:20 pm ET

"Using fear to motivate supporters"

------------------

I believe that fear is what is being used by the Democrats to try and dupe the American people into getting socialized health care. Fear is all the Democrats ever use when it comes to passing Obamacare. They say that people are dying because they don't have health insurance, which is the biggest lie being spewed from Dumbo's party of fear. Harry is just another liberal who is a hypocrite.

southern cousin   March 9th, 2010 8:17 pm ET

It is unfair to compare a good hearted and funny cartoon dog to this worthless, corrupt political animal. All the crooked personal land deals as well as the corrupt dealings of a corrupt party with a criminal leader will come home to roost on this idiots shoulders this fall.

Juanx   March 9th, 2010 8:14 pm ET

Harry,
I too am a fan of Scooby Do...where do I send my contribution to? I am in Georgia.

annie against biased news   March 9th, 2010 8:14 pm ET

It's stinky harry (remember how he made of of dc tourist and please don't insult Scooby Doo. Want to compare stinky harry with something compare him to an evil politician or a serial killer who supports baby murders but not Scooby Doo. Scooby Doo is nice therefore no comparison.

m smith   March 9th, 2010 7:53 pm ET

If the repos couldnt' make some kind of offensive or stupid remark about their opponants they wouldn't have anything to say. There is no substance to the remarks or allocations made by these people. No solutions or ideas from the party of No just, Name calling and character attacks. Hopefully the American public is getting tired of it.

patty   March 9th, 2010 7:32 pm ET

Michael steele can liken himself to Uncle Tom

Kevin   March 9th, 2010 7:19 pm ET

I wish we had a senator who was as good, honest, loyal and faithful as Scooby Doo!

A willingness to work for "Scooby Snacks" would be a plus!

Instead we have Senators who more resemble Muttley or Dick Dastardly....

Watchdog   March 9th, 2010 7:07 pm ET

Bye Harry!!

I am the Great and Omnipotent Wizard of Rush and I Say . . .   March 9th, 2010 7:07 pm ET

I support Scooby-Do for Senate.
(P.S. I didn't coint the term "dingey Harry Reid", that was my friend

Zach K   March 9th, 2010 7:06 pm ET

ScoobyScoobyDo   March 9th, 2010 7:05 pm ET

Ried, we were afraid of you long before Obama came to office.

But that's because you are from Neveda, where the Women are Ladies, So are the Men and the Sheep are nervous.

Have a Scooby Snack and shut up.

Jeff   March 9th, 2010 7:04 pm ET

Way to take this in stride, Mr. Reid. Good luck. And thanks for everything you've done on Yucca Mountain.

Center left-out   March 9th, 2010 7:03 pm ET

The RNC is in a sad state. All fear, no ideas.

SLP   March 9th, 2010 7:00 pm ET

I can't believe that they would insult Scooby Doo that way!

Shelly   March 9th, 2010 6:53 pm ET

I love Scooby Doo! One of the few TV shows I watched as a kid.

Victim of GOP Taliban   March 9th, 2010 6:49 pm ET

What is so evil about Scooby Doo anyways? That stooge that is running against Reid is a million times worse. I can't believe anyone would vote for that phony woman to replace Reid.

Craig   March 9th, 2010 6:38 pm ET

Get over it Reid. You're lucky if you're a Shaggy.

lynnej   March 9th, 2010 6:29 pm ET

When is Time-Warner going to start suing the RNC for using Scooby-Doo?

Bob in Pa.   March 9th, 2010 6:28 pm ET

Finally, a politician that can take a joke. Can't stand the mans views, but I admire him for just going with it.

Franky, Land of Lincoln   March 9th, 2010 6:26 pm ET

This is like the most hilarious thing I seen or heard when I was outside and saw a kid fell of his bike, LOL!!!! :)

But to Scooby Doo? I do like the Nancy Pelosi one, that one is hilarious! But the Joker one to Obama? I don't know, the Joker has swagger and style, our President has...I don't know, :(

Yeah, maybe not the best social comparisons when it comes to cartoon characters. But not a bad raise by Harry Reid, I give him that one.

The GOP can do better, they can.

ran   March 9th, 2010 6:23 pm ET

Fear/hate/obstructionist/purity Republicans. Gotta feel sorry for them. NOT.

People enough of this is enough. It is up to us to say no more. we want our country back and for our elected officials to act like grown ups and start to do for the people.

In the 2010/2012 elections vote for either a true Democrat or an Independent. Do not reward a single win to a Republican. That should get their attention.

todd   March 9th, 2010 6:21 pm ET

november cannot get here soon enough, harry–your fired!

Matthew from Oregon   March 9th, 2010 6:15 pm ET

I still don't get the Scooby Doo thing. What's the connection? What is that supposed to mean? Gibberish!

I WANT MINES   March 9th, 2010 6:04 pm ET

Should have been GOOFY instead but both of those are too big for lap dogs nancy likes them big tho but where is the grease at? I thought for sure she would have them greased up like her favorite stud dog you know charlie rangel it is a shame to use these cartoons to identify with these warm steamy piles

The Calabash Kid   March 9th, 2010 5:57 pm ET

Reid is not my favorite Senator. We need a Lyndon Johnson who can make the Senate work. Reid is more like a hardware store manager. However, he is a better Senator than any Republican from Nevada.

rachel   March 9th, 2010 5:57 pm ET

What he's not scooby doo?

Average American   March 9th, 2010 5:56 pm ET

It was a horrible ad campaign by the GOP. There is nothing they won't do for the almighty buck.

french canadian that cant vote but has a big mouth   March 9th, 2010 5:54 pm ET

Harry is cool.At least hes an American.

french canadian that cant vote but has a big mouth   March 9th, 2010 5:45 pm ET

He looks more like a french poodle to me.

Bruce   March 9th, 2010 5:45 pm ET

TO: stormerF....is that you Rush. "Dingy Harry" is a Rush Limpball term. It's either you or one of your ditto head parakeets. I've got to admit though, you're a good con artist...you got 20 million or so people to vote again their own interests. You know tax cuts, tax rebates, health care...etc.

Chuck Anaheim, Ca   March 9th, 2010 5:43 pm ET

The republicnats subscribe to and are the biggest promoters of "the big lie" theroy that was discussed in a book written in 1925. They need to be called out on it. What the heck is wrong with you guys at CNN? I thought you were better than faux news.

Jann in Denver   March 9th, 2010 5:40 pm ET

White eilitest is right, and not very smart ones at that, which also makes them very dangerous.

jayindenver   March 9th, 2010 5:40 pm ET

"And Bush and Cheney would have gotten away with those phony wars, too, if it hadn't have been for you darn pesky Democrats!"

Zoinks!

I Can't Stand It   March 9th, 2010 5:39 pm ET

I generally support the RNC's efforts, but that comparison was a horrible affront to Scooby Doo fans. Scooby would never announce that the war was lost while American troops were in harm's way. Scooby would never tell impressionable school kids that the President of the United States was a loser. I could go on and on, but you get the point.

Voice of Reason   March 9th, 2010 5:38 pm ET

Love that he's taking the whole thing in stride. Can you imagine how this would have gone over if the Democrats were caught using a DOG to represent, say – Sarah Palin? There would be indignation and furor; demands for apologies and resignations, etc... What does Harry do? Makes light of it, finds the good in it, and moves the discussion back to the issues. (and the GOP say the Dems are Whiners – Sheesh!)

Jann in Denver   March 9th, 2010 5:38 pm ET

The Repugs are stupid and an embarassment to this country. People over seas must be wondering why we consider ourselves the greatest country on earth.

Sam Smith   March 9th, 2010 5:35 pm ET

Uhmmm... Despite everything that is going on politically and so on, has either party thought about the copyright implications of this?

If I remember right it would not be the first time the Republicans had a run in with that set of laws (the music at their convention, right? too lazy too google it...). Strange for the "party of big business" and "the party of law and order", don't yah think? Monetary problems? Or some kind of "Masters of the Universe" complex?

stormerF   March 9th, 2010 5:33 pm ET

Talk about Dingy Harry,Dimwit comes to mind.

Rick McDaniel   March 9th, 2010 5:33 pm ET

Reid really needs to go.

Willa-PA   March 9th, 2010 5:30 pm ET

I love Scooby Doo...

j   March 9th, 2010 5:30 pm ET

I would think Nevadans couldn't do better than with Senator Reid. He's shown he has a backbone, which is fairly rare in Washington. Don't let the Republican/Conservative fear and hate mongering fool you – it's small minded politics and Nevadans deserve better than that.

LacrosseMom   March 9th, 2010 5:30 pm ET

Using fear IS cowardly! The Republicans use fear, lies, hate and division because they have.....

NO new ideas

NO new solutions

Nothing but more of the same.

The "Great Party of NO."

BeverlyNC   March 9th, 2010 5:25 pm ET

Amen Harry!

Republicans have NOTHING to run on. They are still a group of white elitists with NO ideas, NO solutions to any important issue, and have NO leadership. No one know what they stand FOR – only what they are AGANIST – which is everything to do with helping working families.

The are cowards and play to the worst instincts in their ignorant following. Hate, racism, fear-mongering, and promoting violence is not a platform – it is a threat to our nation. Republicans have no integrity, character, no gutter they won't go in, and no lie too outrageous to spread. They cannot be trusted.

Republicans are ENEMIES of the People and have betrayed our democracy by purposefully obstructing all legislation so nothing could get done. It was not for you or me. It was for their own political games. This country's problems and issues are not a game and Republicans should be all thrown out of office for being TRAITORS to our country, our people, and the very process of our democracy.

If a Republicans says it or it comes from FOX – you can count on it being a complete lie. Neither have any credibiity.

John, Brooklyn, NY   March 9th, 2010 5:15 pm ET

What a lame campaign from the Republicans...Feels like Walter Mondale's clumsy attempt to use "Where's the Beef?" against Reagan.
