Obama to give Nobel Peace Prize award to 10 charities

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama will donate his $1.4 million 2009 Nobel Peace Prize award to 10 charities, the White House announced Thursday.

The organizations receiving the money "do extraordinary work in the United States and abroad helping students, veterans and countless others in need," Obama said in a statement. "I'm proud to support their work."

The list of charities includes:

– $250,000 to Fisher House, a group that helps provide housing for families of patients receiving medical care at military and Veterans Affairs medical centers;

– $200,000 for the Clinton-Bush Haiti fund, which supports relief efforts in the earthquake-ravaged nation;

– $125,000 for the College Summit, which helps prepare students for college;

– $125,000 for the United Negro College Fund, which helps more than 60,000 students attend college annually;

– $125,000 to the Posse Foundation, which awards four-year full-tuition scholarships to students who, according to the White House, "may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes";

– $125,000 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, which has awarded scholarships to over 90,000 students over a 34-year history;

– $125,000 to the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation, which supports higher education opportunities for students from Appalachia;

– $125,000 to the American Indian College Fund, which provides over 6,000 scholarships annually to Native American students;

– $100,000 to AfriCare, which supports programs primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa dealing with health, food, and water resource development; and

– $100,000 to the Central Asia Institute, which backs education and literacy efforts for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Obama was awarded the Nobel prize for "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Obama said he viewed the decision less as a recognition of his own accomplishments and more as "a call to action."

The president accepted the prize in a ceremony in Oslo, Norway, in December.

The decision caught most observers by surprise. Obama had not been mentioned as one of the front-runners for the prestigious award.

The last sitting U.S. president to win the peace prize was Woodrow Wilson in 1919. The other was Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. Jimmy Carter had been out of office for more than two decades when he won in 2002.

    When it turns out that he didn't close Guantanamo, kept troops in Iraq, sent more troops to other war fronts, has not stopped any ill feeling from terrorists, this is only fair. He didn't live up to the hope of the award.

    Mr President: Bring the Troops Home like you said.

    Despise this fraud with all my passion, BUT, the Fisher house is a GREAT charity.

    I applaud you Mr. President.

    But then you read down and $125,000 to the United Negro college fund, this snarky POS just had to do that.

    How about dividing that up and giving half to the United Caucasion college fund?

    What's that, there isn't one, but, but, but, but.

    Never mind.

    God bless our President.

    The sad thing is that SOMEONE is bound to say something about this list. "Why not give to...?" The usual diatribe and baseles criticism.

    Pay close attention to his gift to the families of veterans and college students. It says something about the man.

    I have never, ever, heard the level of crap from having one of our very own Presidents win the Nobel Peace Prize. How small, uneducated, disrespectful, and arrogant must we have seemed to the international community. We crticize and act as if we lived in a vacuum where no one else is privy to our irrational temper tantrums.

    We have perfected the art of tackiness and disrespect. It is shameful. Will we be viewed as a people who asked for something, voted for it, got it and now act as if they didn't know their own minds. Are we to be viewed as the "industrialized nuts" of the world, or can we pull ourselves together and regain our civility, and respect at least towards the leader of our nation?

    Proud to have such a genuine person as Obama as our President. It's really disgusting how so many little people spread so many lies and false rumors about him. And when we've had such a lousy previous President that didn't recieve enough scrutiny and ended up seriously damaging our country.
    I know the right wingers, neo-cons, and tea-baggers like to call him the "Messiah", but even with Obama's extensive talent, education, and experiance even he will need more than eight years to get us back on the path of greatness.
    When I hear these nasty little people on these sites, radio, and cable TV try to diminish him with lies and rascism it makes me even more proud of my vote to help him become our President.

    Sheila, I realize that, in many ways, the African-American-based programs do seem like a double-standard, but you have to realize that, due to many circumstances largely outside the control of non-whites (i.e. slavery, segregation, racism that still exists even today, etc.), it is often very difficult for non-whites to be able to afford college. Funds like this, in many ways, make up for the funding African-Americans were not able to receive until quite recently.

    Plus, the reason there isn't so much of a 'Caucasian-only' college fund is because, percentage-wise, Caucasians do not need nearly as much help affording college.

If President Obama weren't elected President and McCain/Palin was elected, we all would be wishing that the mountains would fall on us because it would be the final straw in the implosion of America. The Fisher House, Bravo Mr. President, once again you prove to be a class act! Truly top notch. You who would condemn him should be ashamed, I would bet not one of you knew what the Fisher House was before this article and still do not have any idea how integral it can be to military families, when their service members are injured.

    I can't wait to vote for you again sir.

    To everyone criticizing the fact that the President donated to the UNCF, do a little more research and you will find that he gave the same amount of money to these other scholarship funds: the Hispanic Scholarship Fund; the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation; and the American Indian College Fund.

    All of us are aware of the public discussion of personal generosity and charity that was generated when the public learned that Vice President Al Gore’s charitable giving in 1997 was only $353. Because of politics, we also know that Senator John Kerry, presidential candidate in 2004, gave nothing to charity in more than one year when he was a U.S. Senator. Before his marriage to Teresa Heinz (whose reported fortune was half a billion dollars), Kerry’s 1991–1995 charitable contributions were ($0, $820, $175, $2039, $0), less than one-half of one percent of his income for the period. In contrast, private citizen George W. Bush gave ($28,236, $31,914, $31,292) in 1991–1993. His highest giving was 15.7 percent of income and his average 9.1 percent. As Texas governor he gave
    $27,000 (6.5 percent of income) and $9,178 (2.3 percent) in the next two years, after which his giving returned to higher levels.

    To those of you who wonder about the President using this prize to his advantage for tax purposes, any American that wins the NPP gets the cash award tax free. The President, however, cannot keep any prize moneis won while in office. What he has done is to notify the Prize Committee of how he wants the funds distributed and therefore he will not get the funds in hand. If you look at his taxess this year, you will see the prize funds distribution on his tax form. It is such a shame that this man can do no good in the eyes of some people. I am confident that if he put our economy on top before leaving office and then walked on water, there would be people that would complaine about that.

    I am surpised he did not include the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) society, given that his wife has used many opportunities to talk about her father with MS. I still remember the day this Nation found out that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize. To say that we were all in shock was an understatement. Talk about winning the runner up prize for not getting the olympics in Chi-town. The Neo-Cons, Tea Bggers and the Republicans just went plain ape over the matter, and as a PROLIBDEM, I loved every minute of it. There, my moment of gloating on them is done... for now.

    The FIsher House. The Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund. College Summit. The UNCF. These are non profit organizations to go out and influence people in the communities of this great nation. If the President gave that much to those 4 groups, I can only imagine what the other six are and what they are getting.

    Continue the good work that you are doing, Mr. President.

    What tax liability man?
    Presidents cannot accept prizes that comes with money attached to it, unless they keep the prize AND donate the money!
    It's the law!
    Plus, supposing that he was NOT the President, Nobel Prizes are TAX FREE (or TAX EXEMPT, not sure which term is the correct one), therefore there are NO TAXES that he isn't paying for!

Who else lives there but underprivileged anglo Americans?! Obviously, when you retired your brain retired with you. I think the dissemination of the monies were to various and worthy causes. Yes, it's true any President (even GWB) would have donated the money, but they can all afford to do so. Bush would have donated it to Blackwater or Halliburton.

    To those people on unemployment that claim the President is not doing anything to help them..where would you be without all those extensions? also, if you look for resources you'd find that because of reinvestment act, there is money out there for retraining, so if you can't find a job in what you used to do, you can get training in an industry that will have jobs.
    I'm so tired of people blaming the President for their situation, remember who put is in this situation in the first place.
