Boehner: I'm doing everything I can to stop health care bill

Washington (CNN) – As House Democrats plan to mount a final push to pass their health care reform bill in the next week, the top Republican in the House says he is doing everything within his power to see that the bill fails.

“I'm doing everything I can to prevent this bill from becoming law. Plain and simple,” House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in an interview that airs Sunday on State of the Union.

Boehner added, “What I'm doing is working with my colleagues to keep the American people engaged in the fight.

“I don't have enough votes on my side of the aisle to stop the bill. But I, along with a majority of the American people who are opposed to this, can stop this bill. And we're going to do everything we can to make it difficult for them, if not impossible, to pass the bill.”

The Ohio Republican also faulted the White House and Capitol Hill Democrats for a lack of what Boehner considers meaningful bipartisanship on the issue of health care reform.

Asked about the GOP ideas President Obama embraced after the White House recently hosted a bipartisan health care summit, Boehner suggested that Obama’s move was little more than a gesture.

Obama “took a couple of Republican bread crumbs and put them on top of their 2,700 page bill. That's not good enough,” Boehner told CNN Senior Political Correspondent Candy Crowley.

“We could come to an agreement on probably eight or ten common sense steps that you've outlined,” Boehner also told Crowley in the interview, “to make our health care system better. But we can't come to agreement on eight or 10 things, and throw them into a 2,700-page bill.”

We know. Thanks for contributing NOTHING. Where are your ideas instead of weak talking points? And I am sure the people with pre-existing conditions thank you too. How many died since you did nothing but obstruct because they couldn't get care or couldn't afford it? Great job. Politician at work. It's not about the immigrants. It is about the citizens who get beaten up and lost in the debate. You should be ashamed. Raise my taxes a few percentage points....I can sacrifice for the greater good. I am a true American. Selfish meathead.

It is moronic for people to say that the Republicans are blocking Health Care Reform when the Democrats have held a majority in Congress since 2007. Congress could not accomplish the task because fellow Democrats DO NOT LIKE THE CURRENT BILL, AND NEITHER DO 60% OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS. The Republicans are not against Health Care Reform, they are against the Government take over of Health Care, due to cost increases(even Democrat leaders admit that premiums will increase), reduced quality of care (add 30 million subscribers with plans to fund it), and more deficit spending. The fact is, the Government can not run anything effectively. The Post Office sucks compared to private delivery services. The only reason it is still around is because Federal Law prohibits private companies from delivering first class mail. Medicare covers nothing anymore, and social security will be bankrupt before those of us who have paid in our entire lives will get to take one penny from the system.

    Please do so Mr. Boehner.

Our basic economic common sense isn't falling victim to this White House administration's propaganda.

Please stop this bill for the sake of our economy.

The USA is the only developed country without universal health care–why do you suppose that is. We need universal health care AND a single payer. I heard Rush Limbaugh said if this passes he's moving to Costa Rica where they have some of the best Universal Health care. Smart Move there RUSH.

Over 60% of the people are upset against health care reform but what the Repugliban do not tell you is that of that 60% over 75% are upset because there is no public option, so get your facts right before you go spouting off. The majority of the people in this country upset about the current health care reform legislation are upset because the Democrats have allowed the Repugliban to derail the public option, only a small hand full of fools are truly in line with starting all over as the Repugliban insist they are, but then the Repugliban always lie and twist facts so this is no surprise. The problem is that their constituents are just as ignorant and do not check up on the real facts before they go blabbing stupid Repugliban talking points, that is the real problem.

Why don't Republicans want to do anything to help the American people? Why do they supposedly care about saving unborn lives but scorn the 44,000 lives lost needlessly every year due to lack of health insurance? Why do they scream about the deficit but plan to obstruct a bill that the CBO extimates can lower the deficit by over 1 trillion dollars in 20 years? I wouldn't cast my vote for a Republican if he.she was the only candidate in the running. I love my fellow man too much.

And hopefully, the families of the 45,000 whose deaths you so proudly sanction will remember that on election day.

I sincerely hope Mr Boehner succeeds in stopping this monstrosity–the country can't afford it, and in more ways than one.

“I don't have enough votes on my side of the aisle to stop the bill. But I, along with a majority of the American people who are opposed to this, can stop this bill."

The only majority "poll" that counts was the one in which 53% of the American voters selected President Obama over the 46% that wanted McCrypt in office.

President Obama campaigned on health care reform and a majority sizable majority voted for him, he is merely keeping a campaign promise.

And you Reds like to say that is the only "poll that counts".

How could Boehner be FOR the bill and AGAINST it at the same time? Didn't he and the rest of the RepubliCAN'Ts want to start it over again?? How can they start something OVER AGAIN if you are not for it!!!??? How are the RepubliCAN'Ts going to SPIN that most of their ideas are already in the bill???

BREAK the bill down and see how much is in it that will REALLY helps the American people! The GOOD outweighs any BAD and the RepublilCAN'Ts know that!!!

I want freedom. And that means the government out of my life.

Sure you could have the government give you a place to live, watch your diet, give you healthcare, control your use of natural resorces, control what you watch on TV.... but we already have that... It is called PRISON!

@Candi of NC – I am tired of YOU and your RepuiblCAN'T leaders always stated that LIBERALS are sitting around and waiting for HANDOUTS!!! Who do you think YOU are??? I work and I pay HIGH health care premiums!! My argument is geared towards that!!!

You also forget that many Americans are LOSING their jobs – REPUBLICAN"TS, Democrats and Independents – are YOU blaming them for collecting unemployment and at the same time, worrying about the health insurance they LOST!! Then, when they do get a job back – WORRYING about whether or not the insurance company will insure them because they have ‘pre-existing illnesses’??????? Think about it!!

Ever notice the proponents of this bill keep mentioning how the majority of people polled want single payer, or a public option? Neither of which is in the bill! If that's what the majority wants, why is it not in the bill? Why would you advocate for a bill that does not contain the one thing that is most important to you? It was not the Republicans that removed this from the bill, it was Democrats! The Republicans have not had the votes to add, or delete, anything from this bill! Only the Democrats were able to do this. These bills (House and Senate versions) were both passed when Democrats held a huge majority in both the House and The Senate! It was Democrats that refused to go along with single payer and, or, public option!
Now, what's left, is a monstrosity of a bill that will not reform health care costs, will not lower premiums, ( Dick Durbin said so himself.) will provide the evil insurance companies with millions of new customers, forced to buy from them, by the government!
    This makes sense to you?
Which party is it, again, that's in the pocket of the insurance companies?

    Common Sense!!!!!

  24. Republicans are Repugnant Taliban

The ignorant selfish self centered morons on here truly surprise me, I thought the Repugliban were made up of church fearing Christian people but all you see is hate mongering and fears from this side. The posts by so many on the minority side as saying health care reform is welfare, makes you wonder if they even have a job and have to pay the ever climbing health insurance premiums. They are more afraid of people with nothing getting something than they are of the whole country failing because the health insurance companies robbed us blind. More monies than ever before in history have been put out by the health insurance companies to overturn this bill, who do you think they are giving these historic buyouts to, Democrats? Get real and get a real life, the people selling you out are the Repugliban and they are doing it at the bidding of the Health Insurance companies who definitely do not have your best interests at heart, it might up[set their profits.
