Brazile: Dems who oppose health care deserve to be challenged

A well known Democratic strategist said Monday that Democrats who oppose President Obama's health care reform plan deserve to have primary challengers.
A well known Democratic strategist said Monday that Democrats who oppose President Obama's health care reform plan deserve to have primary challengers.

Washington (CNN) – Prominent Democrat Donna Brazile is calling for primary challengers against Democrats who vote against the health care reform legislation.

"If a handful of Democrats decide to defeat this bill, they deserve to get a primary challenge to defend the status quo & insurance industry," Brazile, a member of the Democratic National Committee, posted on her Twitter feed.

The longtime Democratic strategist served as former Vice President Al Gore's campaign manager in his 2000 bid for the White House. Brazile is vice chair of the DNC's Voter Registration and Participation. She also is a CNN political contributor.

Brazile's comment comes the same day that President Obama traveled to Ohio in a final push to increase public support for health care reform.

"We need health insurance reform right now," the president said at a campaign-style rally outside of Cleveland. And "this is like a patients' bill of rights on steroids."

In the end, the president said, "this debate is about far more than politics. ... It comes down to what kind of country we want to be."

Congressional Democrats and Republicans appear headed for showdown later this week when votes on health care reform are expected to occur.

Only the true communist democrats want to ruin America and give free care to illegal aliens all for votes. Stand tall and don’t let the unqualified one push you around.

Yes, they should. I am sure they will pay in the end if they do not vote for the health care bill.

Hey, news flash Donna, opposition to this bill is bipartisan, not support. You guys did what you said and brought us together. 75% agree, trash this bill!

We need someone who will act as President, not a campaigner. All this wasted money to push through a bill no one has seen. We do know it will cut Medicare, raise taxes, not be implemented for 3-5 years, and cost billions. Start over and get this right. Get rid of all the "Sweetheart Deals" and concentrate on what is truly needed: Buying Insurance across State Lines (not in the Senate Bill), No Preexisting Conditions, No Abortion, Tort Reform. Does it have to take 2,000+ pages to address these issues?

YES, exactly! I'm not much for enforcing party purity like the crazy tea partiers are, but when it comes to health reform these Democrats need to be squashed if they go against their party on its signature issue of the past 20 years, and Obama's number one agenda item. If they somehow emerge from their primary, I'd even go so far as to donate to their Republican challenger as a threat to have them removed. A democrat who doesn't vote for health reform is no good to me whatsoever. Crazy... maybe. But justified.

I am a member of the Coffee Party and we are discussing this NOW as I type. I will continue to discuss this on and off so every member would comment on it!!! So far, I am getting good responses.

Could you imagine?? If I could reach (ah, let me see, the last time I checked, which was about a minutes ago, our member count was over 163,000) every one – they will get the message and follow. We also discussed this at our meeting on Saturday.

Agreed. But I do understand the House's reluctance to pass the Senate's bill with no guarantees of a follow-up.

Could not agree with Donna Brazile more on this. Every single Democrat who votes no on Health Care should get a primary challenger. And I'll gladly donate to those candidates who primary the traitors.

So basically a prominent Democrat strategist is threatening Congressional Democrats who listen to their constituents that she will organize challengers within the party who will what... not listen to the constituents? I don't understand this.

If you don't ignore the people you represent, we will find people that will ignore them, and hope the people elect those people. Yes? Democrats are real smart people.

"Prominent Democrat" hahaha come on CNN. She is liberal mouthpiece for your show and thats it. The only time she was prominent is when she worked for the Clintons. She is just another black woman who sold out for color voting, I wouldn't call that prominent, its more like backstabbing the Clintons.

    Amen, sister!

We need to show the nation and the Rpublican't Party that the Democratic Party can be just as disciplined at moving this country forward as the Party of No can be at moving us backward!

Back the President or be primaried!

    Yes we can!

Good going Donna , Me and my 5 family members will vote against every Democartic member or candidate that votes against this health plan. It makes no differece how long they have held the seat whether a senator or congressman. It is time to get rid of these free loaders who have no problem with letting taxpayers pay for their open ended health plan which is run by the same people that do not want you to have it. I wish that all elected politicians have to pay out of their pocket for their health insurance and see how they like the premiums go through the roof.
