Anti-war protesters rally near White House; 5 arrested

Anti-war protesters took to the streets of Washington on Saturday.
Anti-war protesters took to the streets of Washington on Saturday.

Washington (CNN) - Chanting "We are the change," hundreds of anti-war protesters gathered across from the White House on Saturday, the seventh anniversary of the war in Iraq.

More than a dozen speakers, including politician Ralph Nader and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, addressed the crowd before the group marched through Washington. Protesters delivered symbolic coffins draped with international flags to the offices of Halliburton - a controversial energy services company once helmed by former Vice President Dick Cheney - and the White House.

Police arrested five people after they laid down by the coffins in front of the White House.

"Is the honeymoon over with that war criminal in the Oval Office?" yelled Sheehan during the rally before the march, to shouts of agreement from the crowd. "Why are we giving him a free pass when he didn't deserve it?"

Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq, became a household name in August 2005 for protesting outside of former President George W. Bush's Texas ranch. She is now camping out on the grounds of the Washington Monument in an effort to draw attention to her cause.

Saturday's crowd carried signs including "Indict Bush now" and "We need jobs and schools not war."

An Iraq war veteran burned a small American flag on stage while shouting "this is not my country."

Nader called Bush and Cheney "fugitives from justice," while arguing that military action in Iraq and Afghanistan was creating a new generation of enemies against the United States.

Some called for greater funding for education and other priorities, echoed by those attending the rally.

"War is bankrupting this country," said marcher Lisa Savage, who had traveled from Maine where she says her local school district is more than $1 million short on its budget.

"Just a few minutes of the war could pay for that," she said.

these war protesters are looneys – this is OBAMA'S WAR NOW... Why are they carrying Bush signs?

My son was critically wounded today in Afghanistan – and THIS is the CR*P type of protest going on here in the States – to where the losers can't even get the right people in their crosshairs to protest against?

My son believed in the cause he was fighting for – and he is a Patriot. These clowns are just losers.

Why are they caring on about bush and the like. He has no control over the war now. It is obama that they should all be mad at, for not getting out of these wars.

once again american news media fails to cover the real news! EVERYTHING today is so filtered as if we live in a dictatorship. who care about tiger woods and sarah palin? our country is fighting 2 wars, our men and women are over there dying and the media rarely finds it necessary to report it to the american people. Thousands protested the war this weekend but try to find anything about it on the news. I am not picking on CNN, msnbc, abc etc. you are all guilty. Please rest peacefully in knowing sandra bullocks husband has apologized.

Are these people aware that Bush and Cheney are no longer in the White House? They need to get back on their bicycles, pedal back to Portland, eat their vegan food and leave the rest of us alone. They don't speak for the entire country.

Why are anti-war protesters, practicing their rights to peaceful assembly arrested, while people who disrespect John Lewis in the worst possible way aren't? That's wrong.

  12. Support the troops!

Cindy Sea-Hag is still under the impression that her 15 minutes haven't ticked away. Since her 2005 protest failed she has pulled so many stunts just for headlines: the t-shirt at the 2006 State of the Union, the embrace of dictator Hugo Chavez, the 6-hour hunger strike, the failed books, the selfish protest of the 2008 Rose Parade, the failed run for Congress against Pelosi, the radio show that attracts about a dozen listeners, the assault of a veteran last November at Travis AFB, and today's latest arrest for 'civil disobedience'. This was never about her son Casey, it was about herself and the spotlight.

Now the liberal media has no use for her with their darling Obama in the White House. Somebody needs to remind her she is irrelevant, and to stop disgracing the memory of her brave son Casey. God bless the troops!

Another School district comes up short of money. But the military will not come up short . 7% increase is next up. Washington DC metro area has more wealthy suburb counties sourrounding than any other American citie.

Ralph Nader should be ashamed to show his face in public. If he had not run against Al Gore, Gore would have won, Bush and the Halliburtons would never have been in office, and this country would not be completely wrecked by the actions (or inactions, as in the financial industry) of the Bush administration.

Mr. Nader should crawl under a rock and stay there for the rest of his life for what he did to all of us.

I wonder how many Republicans – supposedly the party of small government – want the government to come out and stomp out and gag all these protestors and then get involved in controlling protests around the nation.

It's time to admit the truth: the war in Iraq is due to oil, not knocking down the Towers and killing so many Americans. The White House kenw these terrorists were in the country and did NOTHING! They waste time and money chasing after Mexican illigals who do us no phyiscal harm, and are doing jobs most American lazy pelple will not lower themselves to do! QUIT LYING TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ABOUT why we are in Iraq! We have oil resources here in American we could appropriate but for the goody two shoes who are on the side of minows, the gnats, the rats and the worms on the earth and care nothing about the people. Save the Whales, sacrifice the people! This country is being led by IDIOTS who are only interested in lining their pockets. WANT TO BE RICH? BECOME A CONGRESSMAN!

I forgot: keep the war in Iraq going, but send all the sons and daughters of all Senators, Congressmen, and other elected asskissers in office to the front, and not buy them out of going to war like the rest of us smucks. Like other politicians who have paid for their sons not to go to war or be drafted! Do you even know how to spell the word 'equality'?
