Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis was the target of racial slurs on Saturday.

Washington (CNN) - Civil rights icon and veteran Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, said anti-health care bill protesters Saturday repeatedly yelled the "N" word at him as he left a heath care meeting and walked to the Capitol.

"I haven't seen heard anything like this in more than 40 years, maybe 45." Lewis said. "Since the march from Selma to Montgomery really."

"Yeah, but it's okay," Lewis added. "I've faced this before. So, it reminded me of the 60's. There's a lot of downright hate and anger and people are just being downright mean."

The incident was confirmed by Rep. Andre Carson, D-Indiana, who was walking with Lewis at the time. Protesters were yelling, "'kill the bill, kill the bill' and the 'N' word several times," Carson said.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Missouri, released a statement late Saturday saying he too was called the "N" word as he walked to the Capitol for a vote and that he was spat on by one protestor who was arrested by U.S. Capitol Police. Cleaver declined to press charges against the man, the statement said.

Protesters also hurled anti-gay comments at Rep. Barney Frank, D-Massachusetts, who is openly gay, as he left the same health care meeting that Lewis attended in a House office building.

A CNN producer overheard the word "faggot" yelled at Frank several times in the lobby of the Longworth building. Frank said he heard someone yell "homo" at him.

"I'm disappointed," Frank said. "There's an unwillingness to be civil."

Frank, who said he rarely hears such slurs anymore, said the health care issue has become "the proxy for a lot of other sentiments. A lot of which are perfectly reasonable but some of which are kind of ugly."

Disgusting. These TeaParty people are a bunch of violent, anti-American racists. At least they aren't hiding under white hoods anymore.

Really? These people make me ashamed! It's down right sick and pathetic that anyone in this day and age would stoop so low. Selfish petty group who I knew would show their true selfs at some point! Educated   March 21st, 2010 1:38 am ET

This just tends to show the true colors, bigotry, of many individuals – presumably Republicans. A shame since the legislators are well intended. The adversity hopefully drives the Democrats to succeed.

Most of the major positive changes in history were pushed and passed by many of the ideals represented in the Democratic party with similar resistance. Ironically, most of these changes came after numerous do-nothing administrations controlled by Republican ideals. FDR and Lincoln come to mind...ironically Lincoln represented the Republican party (radicals as they were) which embodied the current Democratic ideals.

The obstructionists have demonstrated a policy of tax cuts for the wealthy (which is the same as spending) and put their heads in the sand on healthcare. They point the finger when their opposition comes in to clean up the mess – a consistent historical pattern of the political blame game.

Contrary to the typical Republican rhetoric of "having this shoved down our throat" there is a great deal of the populous that wants and needs this – and they are not necessarily social welfare parasites. The majority of businesses can not afford or refuse to provide health insurance & that has only been getting worse. How many employees or contractors have seen health insurance situation improve in the last two decades?

We already have a large social healthcare system that is funded by taxes everyone pays into – Medicare/Medicaid & veteran's benefits. Why not suggest pulling the plug completely on that Socialist system, Republicans? Why not just merge the Church into Government and ban abortion completely, Republicans? I don't hear a lot of answers coming from that side of the aisle but I do see plenty of spit and hear plenty of slurs.

Steve Burley, Courtice, ON Canada   March 21st, 2010 1:35 am ET

It is truly discouraging to be reminded that we, as a civilization, haven't learned the fundamentals of our own preached moral ethics. I do not consider myself niave, or ignorant (in the raw meaning of the latter), but it mortifies me to know that my fellow caucasian countrymen can willfully and publicly abuse a fellow human being, and based on something that cannot nor should not change. I don't give a rats ass if its politics, or prison, if that's all there is left of one's intellect, we have surely arrived at the doorstep of pathetic. Variety is the spice of life, as they say, and I believe human beings are no exception to the cliche`. Maybe if we shared a bit of kindness, people from our own and other parts of the world would see this, and a few less guns get fired.

I, for one, am so sorry that some good people had to suffer the emotional aftershocks of discriminatory comments especially the "N" name. Health care in the United States of America has NOTHING to do with what those morons had on their adgenda! It is in a word, disgusting!

Clean up your own back yard before you climb the fence to insult your neighbor's!! And it's my guess that the name callers, and finger pointers will be kept busy for some time to come if they did just that!

SOM   March 21st, 2010 1:34 am ET

I just happened to be driving on Pennsylvania Ave when this was going on today. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a sign [in reference to Obama] that read "Send the Black Devil Back". You would think it was the KKK marching on Capitol Hill.

Kati Moen   March 21st, 2010 1:32 am ET

I support health care reform 100%. I watched my grandfather die of an ulcer that ate through his stomach and into his pancreas. He didn't seek care because he was scared of the overwhelming cost. Ten years earlier he was diagnosed with cancer, as a small business owner he didn't have insurance. He'd just finished paying the hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills when his stomach started hurting – he'd sold off everything he'd held dear. He's just one of many middle class citizens affected by our current health care system.

Another small bussiness owner who's my friend and my age was forced to give birth to her daughter at home rather than pay the outrageous bills associated with a hospital birth. When it's your financial future... there is no choice.

The reality is that people are suffering in this country because of our health system. People who are educated and working hard to live the American dream.

The racism and sexism shown by today's protesters is sick. Those responsible should be ashamed of themselves, and I hope they are not representative of the majority of those engaged in this important social debate.

Cody Jacobs   March 21st, 2010 1:31 am ET

Yea, this is terrible behavior. When President Obama was elected I was on a charter plane for work and a group of guys in front of me started N this and N that. It went on for a few minutes until I confronted them – "Hey thats enough !" They didn't want to back down, calling me an N – lover but after I asked who they worked for and what their supervisors name was they got pretty quiet. I'm proud of myself for standing up at that moment. – Thats what people need to do – stand up! We should be much bigger than this after all the sacrifices made by those who have come before us for equality. We have come a long way but racism is still alive and well.

Leland from Chicago   March 21st, 2010 1:29 am ET

Ignorance. Go on any online forum or blog and you'll get the same thing from them. The right wing political faction formally known as the tea party has created a reputation as closed minded and belligerent. They are practically teenagers. They are so caught up in there material lives that they dilute themselves from the real one. What’s worse is that their leadership not only teaches them and encourages them, but they participate in the hatred and deceit. I'm disgusted by the thought of what the rest of the world thinks of Americans when they hear their ridiculous lies and see their ridiculous actions.

Carol from Corsicana   March 21st, 2010 1:24 am ET

I have to admit that I'm glad I "saw the light" years ago and switched from being a Republican to being a Democrat. There is lots of anger from both sides of this issue, but I've never before seen the kind of venom that's being spewed by the right wing of the Republican party right now. It's heartbreaking and frightening to be a witness to this and to other scenarios – such as the man sitting on the ground who has Parkinson's Disease who was humiliated by the people who are against health care reform. Please – can't we start showing respect for those who hold different views?

pam albano   March 21st, 2010 1:24 am ET

I am against this form of the health care bill. I agree with the protestors but am sorry these democratic congressmen were treated this way. There is a few of this type of people in every crowd whether republican or democrat. There is no need for name calling of any form at all! Pam :-)

Edwin Dale Clemons   March 21st, 2010 1:24 am ET

I wonder why they simply don't wear their formal wear the sheeted hood. After all it so formal and so precisely conveys their integrty.

Jonathan   March 21st, 2010 1:21 am ET

It's unfortunate, but Barney Frank is right. It's one thing to disagree about the issue of health care and to voice one's disagreement in a constructive way. But the sort of anger and attacks we're hearing about go far beyond that. They're not civil, and as he notes, they're a proxy for other sentiments–among which, I'd include racism (for the record, I'm white). The level of hatred and disrespect shown President Obama by a small but vocal segment of the population reveal their underlying discomfort with change. Suddenly, their 1950s "white" world has been shaken (isn't it odd to be nostalgic for a time of overt racism, McCarthy witch hunts and gender discrimination?–and yet they are), and it's left them angry and frightened. It's not something they can admit, but it's clearly a large elephant in the room. Unfortunately, this country hasn't come as far as it needs to yet, but I hope the Democrats stick to their (metaphorical) guns and pass health care reform. It may not be perfect, but it's far better than the Titanic we're sailing in now.

Lots of noise, No results. 6 years in control of the house, seneate and executive branch what did we get. 2 wars, 1 we shouldn't even be in that was so mismanaged it is still going on 7 years later. Financial ruin and 9 trillion dollars in debt. I am sure the 30+ million who will be covered with insurance in THIS country will be happy. Defecit reduction what a concept.

Paul W   March 21st, 2010 1:16 am ET

Those opposed to the health care bill , including the Republicans, are being exposed for what they are – ignorant, prejudiced, selfish, "I've got mine, the hell with you" uneducated bigots who are only interested in getting as much money as they can while doing as little as possible for our country. I've personally got great health care courtesy of Medicare and Kaiser Permanente but I'm also a small business owner who cannot afford to give my employees the health care they need without causing the business to fail- this bill is a good start towards health care that will eventually be affordable. The US spends twice as much on health care as Western European countries but has the worst health record of any industrialized country..France, Germany , the Netherlands have nearly universal coverage, the average cost per person is half what the US spends but by every objective measure, their health care systems are far more effective.
Obama , Pelosi and Reid have the guts to do the right thing for the country, despite the political fallout from the Neanderthals who oppose it.

Hard to believe. Makes you wonder if their beef is with the health care bill or Obama. Demonstrating is fine but this is over the line. They have lost all credibility with me. Why do I keep thinking, "tea party"?

Bob Wilson   March 21st, 2010 1:13 am ET

That's just the Republican Party being themselves. Most of them are uneducated and low income people (because most people who have college degree's understand how to treat others with respect). These people only want one race and party in control an they are willing to lie, distort, yell, show their true feelings for people of all minorities and even kill. These people say they are Christians, but don't never act Christ like when dealing with mankind. We just need to continue to pray for these lost souls; whom think that the world should be and look exactly like them.

Bubba J   March 21st, 2010 1:12 am ET

Not to excuse the uncivilized remarks, but why is the focus on that rather than perhaps the reason WHY those remarks were made: voters are extremely passionate about the health reform bill. As a result protesters are likely to be more than passionate. Why do our legislators not get that? This article is pathetic; all is does is focus on name-calling. Who cares – voters are angry ... and IF the measure passes it is only going to get worse ... MUCH worse.

Gary   March 21st, 2010 1:11 am ET

This issue isn't about medical care. It's about Race. The behavior of those people using the 'n' word and spitting on them is despicable. They should be arrested and tried for assult. I really thought we had come a long way in race relations with our fellow americans, but i guess not. i bet the republicans in congress won't speak out against this either. How can human beings act like this. We are all on this planet together. I would like to see the reaction, if someone spit on Boehner. There would be an outrage across america.

FourMoreYears   March 21st, 2010 1:10 am ET

This kind of behavior exposes the protesters for what they truly are. There is nothing magical going on – just a dig-in-the-heels resistance to social change. 100 years ago, these same people would've protested women's suffrage. 50 years ago, they would've protested civil rights. Now it's health reform. When they get proved wrong – again – they'll crawl back into their holes until the next great 'threat' to our country.

Sandra Fefes   March 21st, 2010 1:09 am ET

This kind of behavior is totally unacceptable in the United States of America. The people who incite this type of hatred and anger are the true "domestic" terrorists and will destroy this country and what it stands for if they are allowed to escalate their bad behavior. I am 65 years old and I am truly ashamed of what is happening with hate groups in this country. Whatever happened to civil discourse? Sadly, many of these folks are totally uneducated except for the right-wing bigots they listen to on the radio and tv.

James R. McDonagh   March 21st, 2010 1:09 am ET

To Rep. Lewis, Carson, & Cleaver I would like to tell you how sorry I am that you have to put up with this behavior: its not right. A group of people without any manners who think that they behave aggressively because of they don't want any action on a problem that needs to be addressed are not what the country needs.

As I understand the health reform is that if nothing is changed the cost will be greater than if there is no change. In fact, over ten years the health reform bill will save $150,000,000,000±.

Forget that the system is Mediocre, Mendacious, Incompetent, and corrupt: all government bureaus are to some extent, including but not limited to, congress, supreme court, administration, FBI, CIA, USDA, etc.

The objective is to expose it when found.

As to the health reform: when in the USAF I had an officer who instructed me, "Do something, even if its wrong."

Polystyrene   March 21st, 2010 1:08 am ET

This is the definition of the tea party: Bigots. They're only goal is to defame and destroy those they oppose even though the democrats and liberals are trying to help everybody in america and pay down our foreign debts which the conservatives left us from 1994-2006.

Former Republican   March 21st, 2010 1:08 am ET

These teaparty people disgust me. It's obvious that they are nothing more than a front for the Klu Klux Klan – and it's equally disgusting to see the Republican party fall at the feet of these people. It started with the rumor of John McCain's "illegitimate black baby" story, and now they've just gone all in with the KKK Tea Party. I will never vote Republican again. I'm done.

The Tea Party thinks they represent American, and they do- the America of the 1950's. I can only hope this is the dying gasp of an ugly demographic that never accepted that all men are created equal. We don't need racists like this in our body politic.

Michael J. Warner, MMCS(SS) U.S.N. ret.   March 21st, 2010 1:08 am ET

Bigotry is alive and well in the Tea Party. The party of Greed, Fear, Ignorance, and Hate.

leekinny   March 21st, 2010 1:07 am ET

Bravado driven nationalism that disguises hate in an illusion of the defense of mom and apple pie does not improve its immorality. Haven't we had enough of lies, fear, and distortions used by the GOP in order to move the American people into a direction that's reprehensible.

Paul NYC   March 21st, 2010 1:06 am ET

You expect any better from this Tea crowd? I don't. Their rhetoric, fed to them by their patron saint Glenn Beck, is as full of racist and bigoted statements as it is devoid of logic. Ask any of them specific questions about what they are angry about and they will merely spew talking points rather than answers - most of which are outright lies. The strange thing about these Tea buffoons is they come across as right wing hippies, having their fun little protest rallies and whooping it up in a bacchanalia of misinformation. I can hardly wait to see what their "Woodstock" will be. Come to think of it, it already happened. It was called Kristallnacht.

Jay Hunter   March 21st, 2010 1:06 am ET

This is the political right in America today. They can't let the national discussion focus on the issues because there is no substance in their platform. Their policies have failed, are failing, and will fail in the future. They definitely don't want to talk about that.

So instead they use distraction, vitriol, and hatred, and call it "political debate". They organize meetings on television and call it "grass roots".

What sucks is that there's a lot of merit to the ideas of conservatism. Too bad neither party adheres to them.

Tom   March 21st, 2010 1:05 am ET

This should be a bigger story. The so-called "tea-party" is showing its true colors. This is not a political movement fighting for financial rights, it is a hate group seeking to selfishly deny government aid to some of those who need it most. Republicans are fomenting that hate for their own political benefit. You're right, Rep. Lewis, this does sound like the old segregation argument, doesn't it? And you know who's gonna be on the wrong side of history... again? You guessed it...

brenlee@optonline.net   March 21st, 2010 1:04 am ET

I don't think it shocks anyone to see that the hard-right Tea Party psychos are – at their core – racist, intolerant and abusive to the point of violence. They keep trying to paint President Obama and his administration's policies as extremist and "socialism", when it is obvious to any reasonable, thinking person that the Tea Party/hard-right loonies are the true extremists. Their basic position is one of abject greed and selfishness, and always has been. Back in the 90's, Newt Gingrich was correct in defining the issue as one of values – the problem is that he and his "contract with America” compatriots, just like the current Tea Partiers, were clearly on the wrong side of the moral equation. They are against anything that actually helps people. They are nothing more than the American Taliban. Stories like this one only serve to confirm this blatantly obvious reality

Its a sad day in America when its citizen's are so angry at the President and his officials, that they behave in such a horrible manner. But the gov must understand, these people have lost their jobs, their livelihoods and now were about to have controlled health care. The fact is The American government is back stabbing its citizen's. WE the People Elected the officials, we the people should be the ones to vote on the health care plan. America has now become a divided and severely corrupt country. There are so many angry citizens. The bottom line is, the Whitehouse officials are back stabbers and theives. They steal from their own people. Just from listening to my neighbors voicing their anger and even talking about sueing their own country, I fear for the worst uprising against our government that America has ever seen. I pray it doesn't come to pass. Government controlled health care is one of the worst things Obama could ever do, besides his failed bail out plan.

Richard   March 21st, 2010 1:02 am ET

Do wee need any more sign that the Republicans are just as racist as they have ever been. Why the supposedly pro-life party is opposed to giving life in the form of medical coverage for all Americans, especially children, why the supposedly fiscally conservative party is against doing something that will save so much money, is beyond me. But why so many uninsured people still vote Republican is even more beyond me.

Andrew   March 21st, 2010 1:01 am ET

So, this story may be helping to confirm that the hatred in this country over the last year is truly not about President Obama's policies; instead, it is about his race. Why else would the "N" word be a part of the healthcare debate? It's because of the "N"egro in the White House, isn't that really the issue Joe Wilson, Sarah Palin, Glenn Back, Rush Limbaugh, KKK and the rest of the racist White Americans disguised as loyal and patriotic citizens? America's hypocrisy and bigotry is the reason America is so detested around the world. It mistreats all of its non-White citizens – the very peolple who built this country. Fortunately, President Obama doesn't need America to validate him – America can't even validate itself. It's just a country full of bitter, angry, scared little white people.

J.V.Hodgson   March 21st, 2010 1:00 am ET

Well the truth has finally come out. Let there be no confusion, this was never about Health Care. It was never about the Deficit. This TEA PARTY nonsense was all about racism. It is about who our President is and the fact that a black man holds the highest office in the land. They had their Voo-Doo signs and their Hitler mustaches and they liked walking around with firearms as though to send a message. The only thing that was missing were the white sheets. Thank God (or whoever) that enough Americans believe in "Evolution" and realize that the species must "evolve or die". I wonder how many "people of color" were protesting against Health Care Reform at these rallies?

It is about me who is out of work at 65 and I need a job....I need health care. What is wrong with making sure every American has health care? This is is not a country where Republicans are better than Democrats! It is about whether our citizens all have the same care. You should not have to be weatlhy to deserve to get good health care. I need health care as much as any member of Congress. STOP THIS! This is about Americans. Not about being Republican or Democrat!

wes   March 21st, 2010 12:58 am ET

Anybody think this sounds a little fishy. Sounds someone planted in the crowd to me. Any tea partier I know would tell these people to shut up. I'm surprised the media would run with this.

Angie   March 21st, 2010 12:58 am ET

The tea baggers are nothing but a bunch of whiny, racist Republicans. For the sake of America, I wish they will just go away.

shd1963   March 21st, 2010 12:58 am ET

Yeah, right. I'm sure that two black guys would never try to invoke the 'N' word in their politics. Nuh uh, never. I bet they saw a bunch of guys in white hoods too! Probably a noose hanging somewhere and a burning cross. I bet these two guys claim there were a bunch of skinheads outside their speaking location and a truck with a 30 foot chain hooked to the bumper. Yeah, that's it. These guys would never try to play the race card, no.. never.

ron storteboom   March 21st, 2010 12:58 am ET

I'll say it again - a quote from Margaret Thatcher - "The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of 'somebody else's money'". What democrats don't want to admit is that they have over extended their mandate - the mandate was to reel in federal government spending - which the republicans screwed up. The democrats have done the exact opposite and will double the national debt in only 8 years. The republicans deserved to be ousted for the same offenses and the democrats will suffer the same demise. The people want, and deserve, a financially responsible government. Both parties have failed to deliver. When are we, as a people, going to embrace a party that resembles our beliefs in a much weaker federal government that is focused on national defense (only mandate of the federal government in the U.S. Constitution) and leave the socialist attributes to the states - as was the original law of the land? America's decline will be reported in history books for hundreds of years to follow. The report will cite a government that had extended entitlements far beyond what the tax payers were willing and able to afford. It will most probably also contain a litany regarding trial lawyers that made communities incapable to function due to the fear of litigation.

Albert R. K. . L.A., CA   March 21st, 2010 12:58 am ET

This confirms what we all expected all along, that race diven nuts are behind all the noise. The good news is that come Nov. they can only vote once, just like in 2008, and that means they are a minority - something they are having a very hard time dealing with.

joan carney   March 21st, 2010 12:57 am ET

People have every right to be pissed off out here in the good old U.S.A.. What have we been told about this health insurance bill, nothing. How is it going to affect us and why are they trying to rush it through. Something doesn't smell right here. Maybe they need some of the money for the actual health plan but maybe they need it for other things like the ongoing, never ending war that is so G_d D__m expensive. How will it affect Medicare and will Nancy Pilosi please explain this to someone somewhere without using her smiling face. Our government needs to get it's s__t together and stop lying to the people because we are sick of it.

tracy   March 21st, 2010 12:57 am ET

I blame the ugly display by protesters Sat on members of congress on republicans. It started with the lie about death panels back in the summer. Now maybe people will know what I have known all along. The tea party movement is about racism.

time4change9   March 21st, 2010 12:56 am ET

Not surprising. When logic fails the repugnicans will resort to rascist epithets and threats of violence.

laura   March 21st, 2010 12:56 am ET

This is not about health care insurance reform-this is about ignorance, hatred, and being sore losers of the presidential election. I knew all this time that the so called tea – baggers were just mad at the election results last November and they are the fringe group of the repub conservatives-some are just really angry sore loser Fox watchers.

It is what it is   March 21st, 2010 12:56 am ET

What? They forgot to disparage women? No B- word hurled at Pelosi? Lazy teatards...

Ryan   March 21st, 2010 12:55 am ET

And there you have it. The Teabaggers have confirmed what we all knew all along – they're not angry at government, they just hate minorities. They hate that there's an (half)African American for President, they hate that sexual minorities are in legislation...

Of course, we knew this when they were screaming about taxes being raised all year and yet NONE OF US have seen a tax increase (a decrease if anything but certainly no increase).

I am not at all surprised by this. NOT in the least. All those Bubbas and Lurlenes are actually proud to be this ignorant and stupid. They really are.

Salsa   March 21st, 2010 12:55 am ET

Derek   March 21st, 2010 12:54 am ET

plain sad...

markw   March 21st, 2010 12:54 am ET

The Tea Party exposed itself for what they really are. Nothing more than a anger filled racist mob using a political podium to spew their vile hatred toward anyone outside of their prejudiced mind set.

Justin   March 21st, 2010 12:54 am ET

That is what happens when Republicans take of the evangelical mask and show their true colors.

Billy D   March 21st, 2010 12:54 am ET

Interesting that other sources say that no one was arrested. Also interesting that only members of the black congress and Barney Frank were supposedly yelled at.

Salsa   March 21st, 2010 12:54 am ET

There's the bottom line on all this hate and contension. It's not the healthcare reform, it's anything and everything this administration is trying to do for the good of the American people and it all stems from the fact that the religious conservative Republicans are nothing but racist biggots who care nothing about their fellow human beings. All they care about is hating blacks, immigrants, gays and anyone who believes in a woman's right to choose, oh, and making sure they keep their money while trying to make sure the middle class and the poor don't get anything. Keep the down trodden down, that's the way they operate. If the above doesn't show their true colors, I don't know what dies!!!

Dem TIl death   March 21st, 2010 12:54 am ET

Left Coast Mike   March 21st, 2010 12:54 am ET

And so now the inevitable true face of the tea baggers, racists, ne-nazi cowards. We knew it was coming. These days, you can yell "fire" in a movie theatre because anything goes. The Republican Party, its angry, loud-mouthed spokesmen at FOX, are responsible for this. If you want your country to look like Nazi Germany, circa 1936, just look the other way.

I will not. I'm a Democrat and I have a gun too. I'll use it if I have to on this garbage to defend the freedoms my forefathers have fought for since the Declaration of Independance to Constitution of the United States of America against these racist cowards. The Tea Party today is no different than the National Socialist Party of 1933.

Tim   March 21st, 2010 12:53 am ET

The hoods have come off. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and thanks for identifying with this language, GOP.

Joan of Arc   March 21st, 2010 12:53 am ET

This is very sad. Civility should be among all americans. We may differ on views. We may be Democratic or Republican. We may be of different races, but we are all americans. We all love this country and should respect that. Having an opposing view should not make us enemies. We settle our differences at the poll; and then respect and work together. A house divided will fall. If we truly love americia, we must stop the hate and fear. BTW, I do say yes to health care. That should not make someone hate me just as I do not hate anyone who is against it.

jimhh46   March 21st, 2010 12:53 am ET

The core of the teabag movement has always been a virulent racism brought on by the election of President Obama. This nation ignores that white supremacist dynamic at its peril.

Ben   March 21st, 2010 12:52 am ET

I knew that it was only a matter of time before these protestors real KKK identity was revealed! When you hear the rhetoric (which often has nothing to do with the debate over health care) a lot of it is no different from what you would hear at your local Klan rally. Sad. Really sad!

Mike   March 21st, 2010 12:51 am ET

Wow! Republicans are classy!

CT   March 21st, 2010 12:51 am ET

Spitting at Democrats eh? Imagine what Republicans would say if it was the other way around!! When is America going to wake up and recognize political demagogues that are profiting by dividing America?
Dividing America is big business these days with AM talk shows and Fox News. It's modern treason in my book.

Flan   March 21st, 2010 12:51 am ET

65% of America is outraged disgusted and disappointed in your cowardly acts, holding out to get paid off for your votes, and you will see it at the midterms and for decades to come. The democratic party will suffer ten times longer than the Republicans did, and we will recall, repeal, impeach and nullify everything The ineligible O has signed. You can take that to the bank, progressives.

In a country as great and generous as the US, it is so sad that people can become so hateful that they would spit on another human being. The class and grace of Representative Cleaver shown by not pressing charges should give us all pause for thought

Dan - San Mateo, CA   March 21st, 2010 12:50 am ET

It amazes me how angry people can get over something that most of them don't even understand.

If most these people would review the past record of the Republican Party, they would see that the Republicans are responsible for the Funding problems with Social Security and Medicare, for they have been trying since the begining to destroy both programs.

I really can't believe that they can say America is a Christian Nation by the way the act and live their lives.

As American. please accept my apology for the ignorance of those who show no compassion.

HOW to tell A Racist. ( buzzwords Tea party)
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

Way to class it up Republicants.. Your sole mission is to disrupt, obstruct and flat out lie about anything this President is doing to right the ship that has been sinking since the Reagan Presidency! The Republicants & tea-baggers would love nothing more than to bankrupt America & over throw the government.

Get a grip Republicants.. It isn't 1960 anymore. Health care is an intrinsic right!! A healthier American is a better working American. A healthier American makes for a healthier America!! If you don't like that, tough luck! America is broken and screaming the "n" word isn't going to help. Screaming for lower taxes is a broken record. America needs to raise taxes on things we use and things we should be allowed to use. Like Marijuana, its OUR nations largest cash crop at over $35 Billion a year and untaxed.. Tax at 100% and over 10 years, thats $350 billion without touching your income!

America can do better than what the Republicants & tea-baggers offer!

bruce ruch   March 21st, 2010 12:49 am ET

This is just sad. Where is common decency??? WE ARE AMERICANS FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!

connogs9   March 21st, 2010 12:48 am ET

Yes, yes, of course.....the majority of Americans that are against this abomination must be racists and bigots.....give me a break, I'm not saying that this might not have happened, but this is typical liberal media bias trying to change the story and make the reasonable people who oppose this bill seem like marginalized kooks. Guess what dems? If this thing passes the bloodbath of 94 will look like an actual tea party come Nov 2010.

dave   March 21st, 2010 12:48 am ET

The Party of No has created the arena for most vicious hatred I can remember in this country. They have encouraged this since the day President Obama was elected. Is this America? It's not the America I've known for 60 years. Where is the ability to disagree, yet respect the opinions of others? What happened to honesty? The Tea Baggers, through lie after lie at the wall, hoping some will stick. I'm betting that a goodly number of those who were swearing and cursing members of Congress would call themselves Christians – well Jesus never acted like that. These are nothing but bigots and idiots, and it's really too bad the media gives them coverage.

It's astonishing to me how these clowns have been duped into working to maintain the profits of the very insurance companies that will, without remorse, cut them off of their health insurance, should they become a "bad risk."

utahsang   March 21st, 2010 12:48 am ET

Sounds like something liberals would do hiding among conservatives and shouting racial slurs look at all the name calling when liberals post comments on any C.N.N. article they can not put a sentence with out name calling . They seem to think they are making a point by calling people names or belittling them they are not it just shows the weakness of there position. Barney Frank talking about civility you have got to be kidding me when has he ever been civil I don't think he really knows what the word means.

TheTruthForOnce, NOT BS   March 21st, 2010 12:48 am ET

If we don't stop yelling at each other, we are never going to get anywhere. I'm tired of either it is the republicans way or get out of town. I've been a life long republican until this last election and I'm so sick and tired of their petty politics that I can't support them anymore!

Obama 2012   March 21st, 2010 12:47 am ET

That is the main reason for all of the controversy...people just can't trust the President to do his job because of "you know what."

Orygun2012   March 21st, 2010 12:47 am ET

They scream the loudest, who are the most intolerant. They are also the easiest to ignore, because they lack of an intelligent argument. I am grateful, that at least half this country, sees the common sense of this bill.

M. Townsend   March 21st, 2010 12:46 am ET

Anyone who is surprised by this is very delusional. Many in the tea bag crowd are swayed to their current state of fear and anger because of a predisposition that derives from prior latent racial animosities. Good this is they are probably in the minority. And everyone else – for or against the legislation – should rebuke their actions in absolute terms and without any qualifications.

alex   March 21st, 2010 12:46 am ET

This is both sad and disturbing and it speaks volumes of an underlying racial prejudice. I think if it was a white, republican president pushing a health care reform bill and democrats were opposing it you'd see the same angry, divisive rhetoric coming from the right. The RNC is no longer the party of Lincoln, it's the party of trying to maintain a vile status quo that should have been dead and buried a century ago. Frankly it sickens me. These racist, obstructionists should crawl back under whatever rock they crawled out from under. This is America, not Nazi Germany.

Some people got a Raise, I DID Not ...
I will send this out every month until election time, just as a reminder. If everyone remembers, we can make a difference.
GRRRRRRRRRR....! I'm MAD AND YOU SHOULD BE TOO!
Your U.S. House & Senate have voted themselves $4,700
and $5,300 raises.
1. They voted to not give you a S.S. cost of living raise in
2010 and 2011.
2. Your Medicare premiums will go up $285.60 for the 2-years and you will not get the 3% COLA: $660/yr. Your total 2-yr loss and cost is -$1,600 or -$3,200 for husband and wife
3. Over 2-yrs The House & Senate each get $10,000 raises
4. Do you feel SCREWED?
5. WILL your cost of drugs – doctor fees – local taxes – food, etc., increase? You better believe they will!
WILL THEIRS...NO WAY
. They have a raise and better benefits. Why care about you? You never did anything about it in the past.
You're obviously too stupid or don't care. No offense; just making a point!
6. Do you really think that Nancy, Harry, Chris, Charlie, Barnie, et al, care about you?
SEND THE MESSAGE - You're FIRED.!!!
IN 2010 YOU WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO GET RID OF THE SITTING CONGRESS AND Up to 1/3 OF THE SENATE, AND 100% OF THE HOUSE.

Unfortunately, those evil enough to not care about other people's health and not intelligent enough for understanding the truth that this plan SAVES more money than it spends are the same type of people decades earlier who were against civil rights. The protestors are against anything positive happening in this country. If it helps this country get better – they're against it. Either because they're evil or ignorant. There's no evidence to the contrary. You don't see nice, decent people saying they could care less about little kids getting health care...its always the bad ones who are against that.

mstlg   March 21st, 2010 12:45 am ET

Peop;e's true colors are being revealed., and it has nothing to do with the healthcare issue. They still haven't been able to accept the fact that this country has an African/American president and would rather see the country fail those who have no access to health insurance and suffer than to see him accomplish something that benefits all of us. The ignorance of prejudice and hate never fails to amaze me!

Carrie   March 21st, 2010 12:44 am ET

I'm not sure if these protesters think that they're actually going to accomplish anything by yelling racial and homophobic slurs at Democratic Congressmen. It seems to me that a lot of people are just using Healthcare Reform as an excuse to act out all of their hate-based fantasies.

I'm an Independent voter that supports the Healthcare Reform Bill (no, I'm not happy with it, but it is much better than doing nothing) and I enjoy a healthy and civil debate on this issue with several committed Republicans and conservative Independents. Our conversations are informed, measured, and respectful and, despite the involvement by several people of different races, our conversations are NEVER racist.

I doubt very much that the idiots yelling racist and homophobic slurs have any real grasp of the issues or the facts and instead they have digressed to using 1960s fear tactics to press their point. They are an embarrassment to this great nation and to our great diversity of ideas. They represent a minority and do not DESERVE the right to freedom of speech...which is why our beautiful Bill of Rights grants it to them as an inherent right, deserving or not.

America has weathered worse storms and she will come out of this one intact and the stronger for it all.

jennifer   March 21st, 2010 12:41 am ET

What an embarassment. The lack of civility, decency and education in this country down right frightens me for my young daughter. The "N" word, really??? I hope the world community doesn't judge us all by these ignorant few.

milesbrown49   March 21st, 2010 12:40 am ET

The Teabaggers have finnally come clean with their whole motive and what really drives them. Today they chanted at Black Congressmen leaving the Capital calling them the N word. If they ever try to say race is not their concern you now have proof!!!

Orville   March 21st, 2010 12:40 am ET

I'm appalled at the indecency of some people! How is it that our leaders get attacked, their integrity questioned and their life threatened for doing what they think is for the public good – acting in good conscience as a civil servant (whether you agree with them or not)!...oh I'm so disgusted with this group of reactionary conservatives!...we are in so much of a hurt and in so much more trouble than we really know!

Every tea partier in the country should be closely examining whether they wish to be associated with the level of incivility and outright foul behavior exhibited in recent days by these people. I truly fear for the future of our country when this type of behavior is tolerated, encouraged and deemed acceptable by the "leaders" of this movement. Talk of armed insurrection and secession (again!) cannot be far behind from these sociopaths.

Amy , OH   March 21st, 2010 12:37 am ET

This behavior by these so-called "Americans" is unacceptable. I am so ashamed. Rep. Frank said he was disappointed: I am disappointed, embarrassed and saddened. This country is losing its heart....and its mind.

darrin   March 21st, 2010 12:36 am ET

this is not surprising...nothing more than ignorance at it's best....Americans are an embarrassment to the human race.

Eric   March 21st, 2010 12:36 am ET

it is just sad to see how fox news and the right wing have join to speak on behalf of the KKK. for some republicans it is "my way o noway" !

ThinkAgain   March 21st, 2010 12:36 am ET

God bless all the Congress and Senate members willing to do the right thing and stand up to the hateful fear-mongering !

Keep up the good work, Rep. Frank, Lewis, Carson, Cleaver and all the others – we're behind you all the way!!!!

Charles   March 21st, 2010 12:36 am ET

just shows how racist this country really is along with the racist Republican Party with there token negro Michael Steel

Mitch   March 21st, 2010 12:36 am ET

Why print the "f" word and not print the "n" word? I don't understand how CNN is okay with that...

bsd   March 21st, 2010 12:35 am ET

Proof or your lying CNN.

Janice   March 21st, 2010 12:35 am ET

Rep. John Lewis should be revered, not reviled. This behavior is beneath contempt. We all need to stand up and speak out about this. We cannot let behavior like this go unnoticed.

Carolyn Jones   March 21st, 2010 12:35 am ET

This is not surprising at all – the entire Tea Party and Republican movement is based on racism, it does not change the fact that the GOP is only interested in protecting their pockets and big business that continue to fill the pockets......that also goes for the Dems. who Refuse to vote Yes on Health Care!!

MCO   March 21st, 2010 12:35 am ET

And the teabaggers wonder why the average person has no respect for them or their positions. Time after time these people have shown themselves to be nothing but low-class hateful people who care nothing about nothing but themselves.

Republicans are Retarded   March 21st, 2010 12:35 am ET

Way to go republicans. Taking the country back a few steps after we finally think this country actually is moving away from racism and sexual epitaphs.

The hannity's, rush's and beck's of the world have poisoned the already ignorant and unintelligible right wing masses.

Go health care! pass and make these idiot republicans lives better. they wont thank you later, and will somehow blame the democrats for their mistakes

Steve in Denver   March 21st, 2010 12:34 am ET

what a bunch of scum the tea partiers and the neocons are. These are also the same people who blame Democrats for the lack of civility in politics.

ThinkAgain   March 21st, 2010 12:34 am ET

Yep, that's the Republican party's base. Nothing but a bunch of loser racists, ignorant and totally devoid of common decency.

And these people dare to say they represent "real America."

They have no ideas and, apparently, they have completely succumbed to the Republican message of fear, hate and division.

Pathetic, shameful, and a disgrace to our great nation. The founders of our country and all who have given their lives protecting our liberty and freedoms are rolling in their graves.

Vern   March 21st, 2010 12:34 am ET

And we're supposed to take this so-called "Tea Party" movement seriously, with behavior like this? They're a bunch of bigoted, ignorant individuals. I have no doubt that many are concerned about the direction of the nation, and have legitimate beefs with Democrats on Health Care and other issues. But I'm also convinced that many are using this "movement" to try and bring legitimacy to racism and bigotry.

If the Tea Party does not condemn these people, then they should be tossed in the trash heap of history. This as absolutely a disgrace to the United States.

stichintime   March 21st, 2010 12:33 am ET

What is wrong with the GOP that it encourages their people to act like animals? I will never vote for a GOP candidate!!!!! They are spreading hate and lies. It is a shame that the average person that is supporting the GOP doesn't realize that the party is backed by big insurance co. and is only interested in money. Why is the GOP is so interested in health care now. They had over eight years in control and did nothing.People are dying and losing their homes because of either the lack of medical insurance or the insurance co. dropping them. Beware GOP hate mongers you could be next . You could lose your job or your job could drop coverage and what will you do?

David   March 21st, 2010 12:33 am ET

Republican'ts, the party of no and the party of hate. Is it me are only white people against healthcare? When I see the Grand Old Party, I see sheets of white.

tim   March 21st, 2010 12:33 am ET

This is what hate and fear breed. Thanks a lot Rush and Glenn.

Mitchel   March 21st, 2010 12:32 am ET

I hope the American people can now truly see who is thinking of them and who are thinking only of themselves.

As a hint, I've yet to here ANY instance of a liberal lobbying a racial insult towards RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

RBbrighton   March 21st, 2010 12:32 am ET

I've been against this health care bill from the start, but people who act with this sort of disrespect have no place in the debate. Even when we disagree, we have to be civil.

We are all Americans, even when we can't understand each other's opinions. Let's all grow up.

Brian in New York   March 21st, 2010 12:32 am ET

That's really nice. These are clearly the people we ought to be listening to in this debate.

J   March 21st, 2010 12:32 am ET

unbelievable that anyone could resort to such low childish tactics. It's amazing that this level or ignorance and hate still exist in the country.

Anthony Silva   March 21st, 2010 12:32 am ET

Why is this hidden in the politics section and not on the main news page. This kind of disgraceful behavior needs to be exposed and condemned openly.

Alonzo   March 21st, 2010 12:31 am ET

It is very unfortunate that the Health Care debate has degenerated to this level. I am an independent voter and I am not at all impressed with how the Republicans ( in and out of Congress – Senators and Representatives) have dealth with this issue. My sincere hope is that the majority of Americans are reasonable people and not accept this response by the members of the Republican Party. The elections in November may not be as they (Republicans and Pundits) say.

I too am an "angry American" but I strongly believe in respect for the other person and civility to all.

Racism is strong and alive in America whether you believe it or not.

Tony   March 21st, 2010 12:31 am ET

Is there any independent proof of their claims. Or is it possible that the black caucus would have a reason to paint the Tea Party as homo-phobic racists so as to more easily dismiss the Tea Party message of –Fiscal Responsibility–Fiscal Responsibility–Free Markets.
But if it is true, it is sad that a few idiots can take the spotlight off the message of –Fiscal Responsibility–Fiscal Responsibility–Free Markets.

Alex   March 21st, 2010 12:30 am ET

I wish this behavior was shocking but I know too many republicans who spout the same kind of ignorance every day. The deep seated racism on the right is the real reason behind their opposition of this health care reform. They don't hate it because of the money. It's purely a result of their defiance toward any plan that a black president would propose. You would think Obama invented taxation with the ire these bigots have toward him.

kathie2ark   March 21st, 2010 12:30 am ET

Really? A CNN producer heard these things but it never occurred to him/her to turn on a camera? I find it really hard to believe that with all the media there, not to mention people with video cameras and cell phones, no one caught these outrageous actions on camera? Yeah right, here we go again, if you can't discredit opposition with a cogent response whip out the race card. How many times has CNN used the term "tea-bagger" to refer to a Tea Party protester? Obama's approval is rapidly approaching Bush's in record time, when will you start addressing the reasons why?

s.d.   March 21st, 2010 12:30 am ET

Sadly it does not surprise me to hear that health care reform protesters would hurl racial slurs at Congressman Lewis. We have known for the last year that most protesters are white males who can’t stand the thought of a black president. When these people bemoan losing their country, they are saying loud and clear the country they lost was the one being lead by a “white” president.

Alfred E. Neumann   March 21st, 2010 12:30 am ET

Concerned Citizen   March 21st, 2010 12:29 am ET

Hurts my soul to see us take these steps backwards. To use a person race or sexual orientation as a means of leverage is just down right wrong!

Stephen   March 21st, 2010 12:29 am ET

These Tea Party protesters have confirmed what three-quarters of Americans and the rest of the world thinks of them. They are racists, bigots, and ignorant fools who have been brainwashed by the extreme right-wing. Maybe those who thought that America had matured and had become more tolerant were wrong. What a sad day for America.

Congress should pass Health Care Reform not only because it will be good for Americans, but so these Tea Party bigots squirm.

rmd   March 21st, 2010 12:29 am ET

Says a lot about the character of healthcare opponents.

Mike   March 21st, 2010 12:28 am ET

I think the extreme right is going to screw up our unity and our country

Neil   March 21st, 2010 12:28 am ET

We Democrats should not be surprised by these attacks of Racism and anti gay sentiment by these Republican supporters. The Conservative Right wing extremists have taught these Republican supporters very well just how twisted their values are.
The Republicans have proven their leadership over the past 8 years to create massive dept, economic turmoil, Tax Breaks for the Wealthy and Companies at the expense of the American Economy. Their loyalties to the Rich and Corporations are clearly defined by their actions. Again It is blatantly obvious that the Republican allegiance to the Healthcare and Insurance Companies are more prevalent then their allegiance to the American People. It is who they are!! These Republicans have nothing to offer Middle class America but hardship. We Democrats must start getting far more aggressive with these Republicans, particularly when they perform attacks such as these.

I am firmly support the President in reforming Healthcare. We Democrats have made enough concessions to these greedy Republicans who have made no concessions and still vote “NO” on everything. So Say “NO” to these Republicans from Now ON!!!!

EOR   March 21st, 2010 12:28 am ET

They call these people racist when these congressmen are a part of the most racist group in the country. Fact: the congressional black caucus does not allow anyone to join thei group except blacks. Talk about racism!

ClintonFan   March 21st, 2010 12:27 am ET

James   March 21st, 2010 12:27 am ET

I am not sure that the health care bill is the best, but this is terrible. I can understand protesting something you don't like but racial or personal insults should not be allowed. To actually spit on the representatives is unbelievable to me. What are these people thinking? They have to know that these actions are going to be reported and it sure makes their side look terrible. I am someone who has probably voted Republican more times than not over the last 40 years and I am disappointed that these people probably call themselves Republican. This really disgusts me.

Bryn Davies   March 21st, 2010 12:27 am ET

This goes to show you that the polarization in America is also about bigotry. It's more than "disappointing". It's outrageous: Racists of America against health care!

Stuart E Ribblett   March 21st, 2010 12:27 am ET

Do We truly expect anything less from the backward thinking ,small minded, race baiting, tea baggers, birthers ,anti intellectuals that optimize all that it wrong with our country and the Republican Party in general? This whole mess has nothing to do with the Constitution, the "Government take over of health care",or some crazy communist/socialist plot to take over the United States. It has everything to do with weakminded people being lied to by the GOP to do the bidding for large corporations that do not have the best interest of the American people at heart.Where were these same people when Dubya passed his midnight hour BS underfunded prescription drug program? His unconstitutional wire tapping of American citizens ?His and Karl Roves bold faced lies to wage war against a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 and had no weapons of mass destruction? I can't help but be bewildered by the rallies attended by retired people on social security and medicare who do the bidding for a Party that would eliminate said programs if they had their way. If this is truly how you feel, send the SS money and the medicare check back! Just as I thought,Say one thing and do another!

My gut feeling tells me this guy is full of crap. Stuff is not looking good..QUICK!, Get me a race card, STAT!

Over and over we're told how racist the tea partiers are, yet amazingly enough, no one seems to be able to produce any visual evidence. No pictures, camera phones, you tubes, nothing... yet we have countless videos of SEIU thugs instigating violence at such events.

Isn't it also quite telling how the tea partiers don't leave the protest grounds totally trashed like some other groups?

J M   March 21st, 2010 12:24 am ET

This is unacceptable. My family did not suffer through the sixties and seventies with the civil rights movement and women's lib for my generation to accept the verbal attack of African Americans and homosexuals. I love America because it is inclusive and accepting of difference. Immigrants included! How DARE (seeming) protesters of the health care issue bring this hatred to these politicians OR ANY AMERICAN OR ANYONE? Very upsetting and TOTALLY UN-AMERICAN.

TheTruth   March 21st, 2010 12:24 am ET

Jason   March 21st, 2010 12:23 am ET

The time to be civil has gone when those elected to "represent us" turn their backs. If this bill passes, what you saw at the rally will be nothing compared to what's going to happen when people start losing their jobs because companies can no longer afford to pay them. The United States has gone many years without the need for civil disobediance. I would not want to be in law enforcement if this socialist framework bill passes on Sunday.

Donald   March 21st, 2010 12:22 am ET

Hey GOP, bring as many of these dimwitted Tea beggers over to your side as possible. You brought them in your camp so you keep them. I am ashamed of these people who use these words so carelessly. I suspect there were no people over 60 hurling these epithets. How ignorant are our youth who grew up in comfort, but without guidance, obviously.

We who lived the 50's/60's remember the days of pain, sacrifice, examination of consciences, and the final realization that the right, logical, and moral thing to do was recognize what we should have known all along. We are all born equal in the eyes of our country and our Supreme Being (if that is your belief system).

To hurl defamatory words at people because they don't agree with you is the sure sign that you have lost the argument. Otherwise, you would have brought something rational to the table.

sylvia   March 21st, 2010 12:20 am ET

IT is very sad to see how people call each other with bad names, just because they do not agreed.very ugly, and they supossed to be the educated???????????????????????????

this is really terrible! Why are people so afraid of change that is for their own good? If health care doesn't pass, these people who are so against it deserve to have their rates raised so high they can't afford it! where were all the protests when Bush was handing out tax cuts for the wealthy not once but twice,,,,,,now THAT'S socialism! So American;s are for tax cuts for the wealthy but against health care for all?

geoff beneze   March 21st, 2010 12:19 am ET

I dislike hearing the racial taunting or the incivility in general.

However, I have to wonder if the recipients might wish to consider the "will of the people" in the case of this health care issue, rather than blindly supporting Obama when it is obvious the American people are opposed to him in this case.

Tish Obama 2012!   March 21st, 2010 12:19 am ET

This is truly a black eye on our country! I blame the Republicans and all the right wing talk radio! They won't be satisfied until someone gets killed! They are constantly playing with fire by playing on peoples fears! They have truly shown there true colors they are the party of "RACIST!" They don't even represent the country there's no diversity in their party just all white angry men! We need a rainbow of colors in congress and the Senate that represent the country! The REAL AMERICA! Americans who are Black,Latino,White, Asian, Muslim, Native American! Gay!Straight!! WE ARE THE PEOPLE!! Republicans are Racist!! We don't need that in this country, let's show them that way of thinking is in the minority! We are the majority! Vote Democratic! They get the job done!!

Native Texan   March 21st, 2010 12:19 am ET

Not surprised at all. Conservatives typically resort to hate when they don't get their way. Sad....

cdlr   March 21st, 2010 12:18 am ET

That's not at all surprising. That's what the Republican party has become, the party of angry white southern bigots. How ironic is that.

I'm not surprised at this behavior. After all, the Republicans have lied and distorted everything about the healthcare bill...it may not be perfect but it is actually a great improvement on the present system. The tea partiers scream about death panels but the real death panels are the insurance companies which deny coverage for necessary care.

eric   March 21st, 2010 12:17 am ET

we need bush !!!

J Carlson   March 21st, 2010 12:17 am ET

Sad, but not unexpected given the type of people who make up the mob assailing the bill.

Says a lot about the country, not much of it good.

Bill McDonald   March 21st, 2010 12:16 am ET

It is unfortunate that rather than being a catalyst for change, President Obama has unwittingly become a lightning rod or the incredible and palpable amount of racism and bigotry that still exists in our country. The oppositions arguments are based on hatred and ignorance rather than compassion. Never have I seen such selfishness as has been exhibited in the health care debate. The sentiments expressed are, "I have have health care... my fellow citizens go to hell"

eric   March 21st, 2010 12:16 am ET

vote that bum obama out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now he is sick in the head

Dan, Ohio   March 21st, 2010 12:16 am ET

How sad we have come to this type of civil disrespect. I just don't understand how people could be so against something that will help so many. It seems many are afraid of change and only spout out right wing sound bites that make their cause seem justified.

Marcy Magatelli   March 21st, 2010 12:16 am ET

On behalf of the sane majority of Americans, I would like to publicly apologize to Reps. Lewis, Cleaver and Frank, for having to endure such shameful insults, while trying to due their duty, as elected officials of our country. I am so, so sorry that anyone, for any reason, woul have to hear such terrible things. I commend you for your ability to keep your cool, under such attacks and want to remind you that these comments, and the people who are making them, do NOT represent, more than just themselves. Most Americans have evolved way, way past that ugly period in American history, and are ready to move onward to a more civil, respectful society, where these ignorant fools with be completely extinct. Thank you for your service, and I wish you better respect, in the future.

Janice Davis   March 21st, 2010 12:16 am ET

This is sad! sad! sad! Here we are in 2010 and this is still happening. It makes me so d_ _ angry. What is the proability of all republicans voting no on healthcare reform, this is pure racism!! Why? Because a black man is the leader of the free world. Where were all these protestors and congressmen when son's, brother's, fathers, mother's, etc. were being mamed in Iraq and for what. Pass Healthcare Reform Now. I worked in the healthcare system and it is just as bad as politics.

Jen   March 21st, 2010 12:15 am ET

It has always been about race for the teabaggers. They can't handle a black man as president, so their true colors are coming out! Shameful & I hope this group of people destroys themselves.

Ana   March 21st, 2010 12:15 am ET

If true, that's absolutely detestable behavior. And it's distressing both for the people who the slurs were directed at, and for the movement to be tarred by a few extremists in their midst. Sentiments and language like that should have no place in our society.

On another note, I'm surprised to hear Rep. Frank bemoan the lack of civility, as he's used sexual slurs in the past to refer to the protesters. Maybe he and the tea partiers can come to an agreement not to attack one another's sexualities in the future, and focus solely on the issues.

Brian   March 21st, 2010 12:15 am ET

i hate the bill (and have no respect for the dems) as much as anyone, but this behavior is sad. There are so many conservatives and intelligent independents/dems that are opposed to this health care approach, but they are overshadowed by ignorant low-lifes.

eric   March 21st, 2010 12:15 am ET

kill the bill you losers

Spider   March 21st, 2010 12:14 am ET

Just an observation--

Why is it that we have to use N word as a reference to a widely known negative racial epitath, but there's no problem spelling out and quotating equally derisive words relating to sexual preferences?

carol petrie   March 21st, 2010 12:14 am ET

I truely believe these "teabag people" are using the healthcare bill as a means to express their hatred for anyone who isn't white and heterosexual. These same people were silent for eight years while then President Bush borrowed money and drove our Country into debt for tax cuts for the rich. We now have a black President who is trying to do something right for all of us, and he is called a socialist. No matter what it's called, I stand with President Obama.

Compromise or Die this is democracy . charles bowen

Kentucky   March 21st, 2010 12:13 am ET

Can anyone say ignorance? Pass health reform Sunday!

Markus   March 21st, 2010 12:13 am ET

Tea party members are Americans, and passionate Americans at that. Saying Slurs is just a use of creative vocabulary to get attention. The fact that they used the n-word to get a black man's attention, is nothing special. Rap stars use the word all the time to get attention. In context of this passionate debate, it can be justified.

JP   March 21st, 2010 12:13 am ET

How is it that with the media barrage on capital hill, the only mention of racial slurs as part of the health care protests comes from two congressmen who support the bill. The very same bill that an overwhelming majority of the citizens of this country oppose.

I'm not saying these accusation are fabricated, however it would be naive to think that the democrats wouldn't stoop to any level to pass this crockery. This is not a racial issue.

Mohammed Mohammed   March 21st, 2010 12:13 am ET

so this is what it comes down to. people showing their true colors as to why they protest against the health bill. Most people who protest, I dare say over 90% have not even read the thing, or even attempted to understand it and what it will or wont do, they are just motivated by hate towards a party, or a president who they dont like not because of his policies but because of his color, and if you think I am wrong, well this article speaks for its self

Ken   March 21st, 2010 12:13 am ET

It takes some truly childish whackos to scream epithets and spit at politicians, JUST because they aren't getting their way. I feel very sorry for the right if this is the nature of their psychosis.

Lucretia   March 21st, 2010 12:13 am ET

Americans shouldn't be spitting on other Americans. It was wrong during Vietnam and it's wrong now.

bl   March 21st, 2010 12:12 am ET

This is another attempt by the media to condemn the tea party and focus on a select few to put the movement down. This network never focuses on the positive aspect of the movement, instead they find whatever they can to make protesters look like racist bigots. Its un,fortunate that CNN cannot be neutral. If they put stories like this up, they should also put positive stories up about the movement too. The tea party is a national movement and despite this network's attempt and hope to squash it and silence it, it will only grow bigger and stronger as the citizenry, both black and white, wake up and come together to reestablish the American ideals the founders formed this country on. Sorry CNN but this story won't have the effect your looking for.

BillyBob   March 21st, 2010 12:12 am ET

These protestors need to be arrested

Linda Reynolds   March 21st, 2010 12:12 am ET

If this is what the Republicans and religious conservatives think is the way to behave as Christians, they are badly mistaken!!!

Babbalouie   March 21st, 2010 12:12 am ET

Once again the Tea Partyers showed us all who they really were: ethnocentric racists. Their declarations about avoiding an increase in the federal deficit and concerns over having to pay higher taxes are only a smokescreen to cover up their true natures.Way to go guys, now take your tea bags and go home. And while you're at it, take Rep. Steve King with you.

Amy   March 21st, 2010 12:11 am ET

CNN failed to mention that the protesters that were yelling racial slurs and spitting on democrats were tea baggers. Maybe that is because CNN is the main supporters of The Tea Party–Like FOX is for the Republican party.

jeff   March 21st, 2010 12:11 am ET

This is just wrong. We are all against the bill and know the Dems will do whatever the President and Nancy tell them to do but to do this is not what America stands for. what we stand for is to kick them out of office for not listening to us. Do not lower yourself

Anonymous   March 21st, 2010 12:11 am ET

So this is the freedom we fight for everyday, have the hate overcome people that much. See this is what happens when people spead bogus information in the media and these so called town hall meeting. Now you heard all this people talking about the Constitution and we the people and you smart guys come up the N-word..... You all should be shame of yourselve and embrassed over the current behavior.

RK   March 21st, 2010 12:11 am ET

This just confirms what I've suspected about the "loyal opposition". Just a bunch of angry bigots.

Miranda   March 21st, 2010 12:11 am ET

All I can say is if the bill passes it will likely get even uglier. People are tired of our Goverment and unruly behavior has been surpressd for awhile now, WE THE PEOPLE DO NOT WANT THE BILL!

char   March 21st, 2010 12:11 am ET

he is a liar nobody said anything to him,
This is just another way for them to use the racecard!

Huck   March 21st, 2010 12:10 am ET

Hatred breeds contempt. Since the Republicans and conservatives do nothing except this sort of thing, it is obvious they are neither patriotic nor concerned about our country as a whole and I feel nothing but contempt for them. If there is a revolution coming, I'll defend America, our President, Democrats, and Liberals using the guns that the Republicans guaranteed me the right to own. I've never wished ill will toward anyone, but if the health care reform doesn't pass, I pray that such idiots as involved in this protest get the privilege of watching someone they love die from lack of affordable insurance. Better yet, may they themselves not receive the same care that the Republican obstructionists guarantee themselves. Evilness must be addressed now, and true Americans need to line up face-to-face to the bigots and idiots and demand civility. Wonder what Jesus thinks when He sees their actions? God bless the USA and true Americans.

James Wagner   March 21st, 2010 12:10 am ET

The republicans are starting to show their true colors, beside not trying to solve problems they are just building more problems and you can see shades of the of the hate groups that we had hoped were gone!

retard   March 21st, 2010 12:09 am ET

wow.................
how intelligent

eyewonder   March 21st, 2010 12:09 am ET

I wonder where all of the funding for protestors who spew hatred comes from?

SHughes   March 21st, 2010 12:09 am ET

Civility has been lost because our politicans have created a world of fear and hate (and by politicians I mean Republicans). This bill is for AMERICANS, and is the best piece of legislation to come from congress in a very long time and if the Glenn Becks and Rush's of the world had at least half a mind to see that, they too would understand this is the right thing to do. Instead, they spread fear and hate and that is all the republican part knows and can fathom. Are we still in America?

Jack   March 21st, 2010 12:09 am ET

When the revolution actually comes, I hope the first against the wall are the idiotic, mouth-breathing, scum bag cowards that shouted this nonsense today.

Markus   March 21st, 2010 12:09 am ET

Tea Party Members are American, and passionate, and saying slurs is just a use of vocabulary to get attention. The fact that they used the n-word to a black man's attention, is nothing special. Rap stars use the word all the time.

Roy Jones   March 21st, 2010 12:08 am ET

Typical tea party reaction- hate and rude behavior. Thr right wing radicals don't know any other way to act. How pitiful and disgusting

Ben   March 21st, 2010 12:08 am ET

This should not surprise anyone. The Tea Party movement has consistently shown signs of racism and other types of bigotry and those tendencies are just coming out in the open now. Barney Frank is quite right in pointing out that the health care issue has become a proxy issue for a whole range of other, less publicly acceptable anxieties.

viv mcpeak   March 21st, 2010 12:07 am ET

There will always be the ignorant, the bigoted, and the hateful among us. We cannot let that deter us from advancing and progressing as a society and culture.

Health care is not only a basic human right, it is in the best interest of our nation. A strong, healthy workforce is a productive workforce, and it only makes sense to provide health care to Americans who cannot afford the corrupted and abused corporate model we have today.

It is a shame that other nations provide this essential service to their citizens but in the United States we do not. well, that is, if you except the U.S. Senate.

Doug   March 21st, 2010 12:07 am ET

The protesters are showing their true selves. Sad, hate-filled people.

Kajaan   March 21st, 2010 12:07 am ET

one should listen to the right wing radio and TV hosts to know that this is being provoked by them. Glen Beck took a break in his show to make his guest repeat in a prepared statement that Obama is like Sadam Hussain and Mugabe...!
where is the civility in that.? when is this going to be about us the tax payers instead of the single agenda of the republican party .."shut Obama down...!!'

adm   March 21st, 2010 12:07 am ET

And the teapartiers expect to be taken seriously.

Brena   March 21st, 2010 12:07 am ET

The people who oppose healthcare in my mind are people who are biggots. It's really not about healthcare to them. It's Reputlicans vs. Democrats, it's about a minority president in the most powerful position in this nation. It can't be about healthcare because, unless you're an executive who get extra health insurance perks, healthcare needs reforming.

Honest Abe   March 21st, 2010 12:07 am ET

Republicans are true ANIMALS! The Anti – American Racist slurs show the real nature of anti-health care tea bagger GOPs.

Mike Mc   March 21st, 2010 12:06 am ET

further proof that the tea party movement is just a thinly veiled disguise for a bunch of redneck racists with more bullets than brains.

forty   March 21st, 2010 12:06 am ET

These tea party/Limbaugh/Beck/Hannity, idiots are taking a page right out of German history. Start reading propaganda spread by Joseph Goebbels throughout pre-world war II, and you will see the fascism spewed by the right. They hate, separate, and demonize others in this country. This is all done to control their followers. Next time you hear the words "real Americans" take a good look at who is saying it. Anybody in this country still using the N word has got real issues, and it points directly to their intellectual deficiencies. Come on America, we have to be better than this! Shut Glenn Beck off tonight! All he is doing is making millions stirring the pot with hatred, misinformation, and lunacy. America cannot afford anymore foot dragging, and mud throwing! Grow up.....

fastrack   March 21st, 2010 12:06 am ET

sticks and stones...stir up a crowd, tell them lies, and then sit back and watch them hate. "Boner" must be really proud to be an American right now.

marcus2   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

These Teabaggers are totally disgusting. Thanks Fox News for all you've done to showcase these crazed racists.

mike.texas   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

A repeat of the civil rights movement and we know how that went.

Charlie   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

It doesn't surprise me, people who can't intelligently debate or express themselves regarding a topic always resort to personal attacks.

Ron Colvin   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

"N" Word, I quest the Republican leadership is showing the their true
colores, what a shame !!!

AH   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

This is a sad day in America.

Vietnam Veteran (DC)   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

Finally they came out of the closet and express their true beleif , instead of the smoke and mirrors hiding behind the Big Goverment, Social Medicine and all of the other trigger fear words they and the Repugs are famous for. I am willing to bet no repub will condem any of their actions because they know this small racist so call tea party group is expressing the beleif of them and a small minority of americans. Its not about the Health Care bill, its about disrespecting and or blocking any legislation push forward by a Black President whom a small minority still can't accept.

Jonesey   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

Dumb crackers... and I'm white.

Barb   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

Too sad but too typical. The tea baggers I know personally (family members) are NOT the sharpest tool in the shed, and can't argue without resorting to hate speech.

Recently Employed by Federal Stimulus Spending   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

I have known all along that many of the people protesting against healthcare reform are using this issue as a cover to protest that fact that we have a black man serving as President of the United States.

The very fact that some of these people are openly using the "N" word is proof of this.

AH   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

This is sad day in America.

Terry - Indiana   March 21st, 2010 12:05 am ET

All paid for by the Republican Party.

starburst   March 21st, 2010 12:04 am ET

This is Disgusting. People should be ashamed for treating people like that.

phil ryan   March 21st, 2010 12:04 am ET

Well, at least this illustrates perfectly what this brand of Republican party is. This is the deep south, black hating, white men only rule this country party. We have willfully uninformed middle aged to older white folk opening their mouth with wonderful nuggets like "If they pass this health care, they're gonna come after guns next." Gee, you think she listens to Glen Beck? Rush? Hannity. Fox News is a dangerous organization which has done everything short of incite riots. Roger Ailes belongs behind bars and as for Murdoch? That old fool needs deporting back to Australia - if they will have him back. So the next time CNN bends over backwards to portray these goons as people with a point, just remember what they said. The N word flew, black men were spit on. And it's about time CNN grew a spine and uncover this "movement" for what it is KKK sympathizers masking their agenda as just concern over the deficit. Something they were silent on for the last 8 years during the Bush era. I never saw Boehner spat upon or senior citizen McConnell - both smug race baiters. Absolutely disgusting trash. Couple that with the incident with the man sitting on the ground having insults and dollar bills thrown at him and you see this party of morality and values has neither morals NOR values.

Amazed   March 21st, 2010 12:04 am ET

Yes the base of the Republican Party shows it's true colors.

KBax   March 21st, 2010 12:03 am ET

The people that called names and spat are utterly ridiculous! I don't agree with this bill, but I would call people names. That gets you nowhere, and if anything sets us back years. The people that did this should be ashamed!

Steve   March 21st, 2010 12:03 am ET

Feel free to step forward and smack these punks. Demand respect. They're just loudmouth punks. They need and desire to be smacked. I smacked 4 teapartiers recently. They seem to like it, or at least cower and run away. So smack em.

Roy   March 21st, 2010 12:03 am ET

That shows that the Republicans & TEA Partiers are evil. I am calling them "The Evil Association" Party.

johanna   March 21st, 2010 12:03 am ET

How very, very sad for some to act this way. When will people learn that just because they have the right to do things doesn't always make it the right thing to do? This has gone beyond the issues at hand and people are treating it as a "free for all" because of their ignorance, to throw their insults. We've read about things like this happening before, but what worries me is I'm sure it won't be the last time. Talk about going backwards.....

badcyclist   March 21st, 2010 12:03 am ET

You would think that Representatives Lewis and Frank would be used to Republican civility by now.

JP   March 21st, 2010 12:02 am ET

That just goes to show the caliber of person that is protesting such a great and prosperous bill. I just can't believe someone could be so ingnorant, but stupidity never ceases to amaze!

Kevin H   March 21st, 2010 12:02 am ET

The experiences of Representative John Lewis remind those of us who care about civility in this country, if not now, when, if not us, who, if not this, what? I honestly hope that we have pictures of some of these protestors who are so nasty because I want to face them in a few years and I want to ask them how proud they were that they wanted to deny people like me with a chance to be healthy. I want to see these folks and tell them that family members who died of cancer because of greedy insurance companies need not have died – and see how they would feel if their families incurred long term, unsustainable debt. Protesters have now proven that the far right wing has support – from the most vehement racists and bigots in American – enjoy the support folks. See ya next election – signed the Silent, non-vocal, voting majority.

Dave   March 21st, 2010 12:02 am ET

Lobbbyists have bribed republicans (and some democrats) with money, hookers and vacations to vote against health care reform. These protesters have not even been bribed, just brainwashed. They probably have an average IQ in the low/mid 90's. Republicans rely on an average low IQ among the ignorant masses.

Sunny   March 21st, 2010 12:01 am ET

Why blame these protestors? They are PATRIOTS! They are what makes this country great! If anything else, these people who yelled the "n" word, called Barney Frank "f#g" and spat on Cleaver should be praised!!!! After all, the poor, the middle class and small businesses DO NOT deserve access or affordable health care. We are angry..so angry...We don't need Pelosi, Reid or Obama...These Patriots form part of the highly intelligent, Reagan minded, conservative, tea baggin tapestry of real America. Hail to our Heros Rush, Ingram, Levin and Hannity..Rep. Wilson, praise Bohner, Bush and Cheney...we are your servants...we will never give up our fight against, gays, immigrants, ni#@%rs, al queada and democrats. Long live...us! Just us...! Here's to us!

Macleod2012   March 21st, 2010 12:01 am ET

To bring out this much anger has to tell you something....if anything that what you are doing is wrong...to think that one bill took this much time and "persuasion" to pass tells you something...that this is wrong....for one bill to set civil rights back 40 years tells you one thing...that what you are doing is wrong

Ced   March 21st, 2010 12:01 am ET

Unfortunately, America is coming face to face with the "Real America".

Please somebody defend this latest display.

I personally know some Tea Party members. The very sad fact is they have a lot of money. I mean a lot. So even if the health care bill passes, they are just fine.

From where I sit, the Change euphoria is gone and some, not all, but a vast majority are finally realizing that we have a black President and that is not sitting well. Was there a "Tea Party" when the Bush administration steamrolled items through? Nope. Just reserved regret years later. He was a white male and there was no in America dumb enough to go against him. Late-night fodder but no real organized movement. However.....Obama tries to do something good for the people of this country who are hurting and in need and this is the result.

Communism. Socialism. Really? Sad day.

Ambitious on Obama administration's part ? Yep.

Worthy of this response? C'mon America grow up.

Reality   March 21st, 2010 12:01 am ET

This is the true face of the tea-bagger movement. I went into 5 of there "conferences" or gatherings. When the cameras are not rolling, the vile and bigotry that spews from there mouths is disgusting. They are nothing but a modern day Klan. Healthcare reform means nothing to them. It is all about a black man in a White House. I got into the planning sessions for a few rallys and these people are nothing but bigots. Go to a private meeting, as if you are one of them, and you will hear the truth. When they say they want their country back, they mean back to Selma, 1963.

Diana   March 21st, 2010 12:00 am ET

Shame on these people that cannot be civil during this health care debate. Democrats stand your ground. You are at the cross roads of history and will show the world that the United States takes care of ALL of its people. We will not leave anyone behind and again lead the world in showing how that can be done! "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all"

Nuttingham   March 21st, 2010 12:00 am ET

These people are outright disgrace to humanity. I am not against protesting this bill, but stating racial slurs and demeaning another human being is totally wrong. They should be arrested for making such comtemptous remarks.

Hanford Searl Jr.   March 21st, 2010 12:00 am ET

... HEY RePUKES-&-Tea Baggers!!! 2-WARS, $3-TRILLION, 1.5 MILLION dead Iraq children, women-&-men! SHUT-UP-MORONS!!!

Winston   March 21st, 2010 12:00 am ET

The Tea Party/Fox News viewership is made up mostly of suburban/rural, white, southern, middle-aged people. It was just a matter of time before their deep seated bigotry and homophobia came out.

bbchicago   March 21st, 2010 12:00 am ET

I guess we are finally seeing the true character of the Tea Party Movement.

jill   March 21st, 2010 12:00 am ET

Pray for our nation. Only God can help us. We are full of evil, loud mouthed idiots and liars....what hate can do.....sad.

Laura B.   March 21st, 2010 12:00 am ET

Wonder what Michael Steele would have to say about his fellow "Republican" tea party members shouting the "N" word. It takes courage to change the status-quo. Rep. Lewis displayed such courage during the civil-rights era and is doing so again tomorrow. God bless.

Dave   March 20th, 2010 11:59 pm ET

While I agree there needs to be health care overhaul, I do not agree with this bill. However there is no excuse, no matter how upset you are, to call these congressman the names that were used. These demonstrators weren't acting like adults or children, because children behave better than these people did. You will not get anywhere's with this type of action.

Shaquanda   March 20th, 2010 11:59 pm ET

Good. I hate that fgt.

Shaquanda in da house y'all!

Ethel Bailey   March 20th, 2010 11:59 pm ET

I am not suprise at the racial slurs that was used on Saturday. Beacuse the people have not changed at all they are saying thy are sheep, knowing they are still wearing wool clothing. The slurs will never leave as lone as the world is inexisting.

Bill in Dallas   March 20th, 2010 11:59 pm ET

This exposes the Republicans to what they are, racist. They don't talk issues because they don't have issues, they can only fight with slogans and sound bites. I truly believe it is not health care or the stimulus package that got these extremist off their butts and into the streets, it was racisim and their inability to accept an African American President. The majority of us have to endure these fanatics because the main stream media loves them because they give them the controversy they want to sell deorderant. This is truly a sad commentary on us as a Nation.

re   March 20th, 2010 11:58 pm ET

Cowards

Moi   March 20th, 2010 11:58 pm ET

It is those pieces of trash who were ugly to Lewis, Cleaver and Frank who deserve to lose. You don't like their politics and their policies? Fine. But your bigotry is disgusting, and un-American.
God Bless America!!

abu-bakarr   March 20th, 2010 11:58 pm ET

i was really dissappointed to those mod who attacked and use racial slur against our civilright activist and obedientman who gave so much to this land, shame on republican party again!!!!!!!!

kay   March 20th, 2010 11:58 pm ET

These Tea Party people are disgusting.

misanthropicus   March 20th, 2010 11:57 pm ET

Someone heard something, a few saw something, there isn't any trace of evidence here, and this article fits perfectly the illustration of a primitive hack job, too – god, have the Dems reached this level of despair that they hired Chavez's electoral strategists? Gross, gross, primitive. I have no opinion about the HC bill – yet the Dems' tactics made me hate it, and regardless of results, in the same vengeful mode I'll walk to the voting station this November -

harmonywoods   March 20th, 2010 11:57 pm ET

it's sad that the health care reform bill fight has resorted to this ugly name calling. What these people don't realize is that it probably will backfire on them...in other words you don't get what you want by hurling racial and antigay epithets. It's not helpful. I hope the health care reform bill passes because we need it and it will help millions of people and will save money for the country in the long run. It's too bad that so many people are making their decision about healthcare reform based on fear and not on what is right. I applaud Obama for trying to do what is right.

Yachimen   March 20th, 2010 11:57 pm ET

Real sanitary. Finally, good riddance to a crazy broken system
