Health care reform and deficits: A reality check

Washington (CNNMoney.com) - The momentous vote the House took on Sunday made far-reaching changes to the American health care system.

When enacted, it will extend coverage to 32 million more people. It will protect policyholders from being bounced for pre-existing illnesses. It will expand Medicare prescription drug coverage and offer subsidies to help people pay for insurance.

The expansion of coverage isn't cheap. According to a preliminary estimate by the Congressional Budget Office, the legislation would cost $940 billion over the course of a decade. Offsetting provisions would reduce deficits by $143 billion in the first 10 years and by more than $1 trillion in the following decade.

But the economic mechanics of health care reform are exceedingly complex. Does the legislation do enough to protect the budget?

CNNMoney asked a panel of fiscal experts to size up the legislation from a budget perspective.

It'll work out and the new system will run. This is a nation that survived nearly cutting itself in half, bankrupted an equal power in a cold war, put humans on the moon, set up many sweeping new systems like Social Security and Medicare, and survived many devistating natural disasters. Heath Care will be another great achievement on our impressive resume.

after all it is not a vote for the American people it is a vote for Nancy who should be ashamed of her self how she in one statement said "no deals" and then strikes one. In the real world she would be called a liar but in Obama's she is a hero. What have we become. And to think we were worried about Sarah.

What's wrong with Wolf Blitzer and the entire panel that they are making excuses for the individual who hollered "baby killer" at Bart Stupak, a fiercely anti abortion individual, in the House after losing the vote on "recommiting." It is not only indecorous. It is dangerous to the individual. This type of hate language encourages others to act out as in the killings of doctors who perform abortions. None of the Democrats spoke such language to Republicans who know that people die every day from lack of insurance for pre-existing conditions that they can no longer get covered.

CNN panel of "fiscal experts", what's that, Phil Graham, Grover Norquist, John King in drag?

Why doesn't the list include someone like Howard Dean?

Small and mid-sized businesses in America are going to suffer greatly.

The Fed government has once again given the big businesses and their lobbyists exactly what they wanted – reduced competition.

What next Chavez... I mean Obama.

Could we have a reality check AFTER it's been around a bit. The media does more damage than good. Try and just do good reporting for a while instead of giving me your "experts" opinions on things. It is very tiresome and makes me shut you off.

Thank you President Obama and the strong leadership of the Democratic Party!!!

FINALLY – we have social justice and equality for all Americans. Healthcare is a right and should have been a value of America long ago.

Democrats have delivered again for the People!

Republicans lost and lost full of hate, lies, fear-mongering, and racism. It's time to rid Congress of these despicable American traitors who have NEVER done one thing for the People.

This proves the government works FOR the PEOPLE and Republicans only work for special interests and abusive insurance companies who kill us for profit.

YEA for US – we have finally have reform despite all the Republican obstructionism. Our prayers for healthcare have been answered.

Thank you President Obama for your amazing leadership and for caring so much about the American People and the state of our lives!

A majority of voters do not believe the CBO, in fact a huge majority.
A 3/20 Rasmussen poll shows 81% of voters believe Obamacare will cost more than the CBO says. Not because they do not trust or believe the CBO, but because experience and history tell them they can not trust the government. They believe the government will spend more than they say they will on Obamacare and fail to manage and fund it responsibly. Just like Social Security and Medicare, two programs that threaten to bankrupt America if they are not fixed soon.

What was falsely presented by Democrats tonight as a Deficit Reducing Healthcare Bill is comical.

Obamacare will be a piercing arrow to the heart of the American economy, job growth and small business.

The People that ultimately will be asked to PAY for this monstrosity, will set the record straight this November and remove the scumbags that sold their souls to the Devil tonight.
