Washington (CNN) – For the first time, a CNN poll has found that a majority of Americans disapprove of President Obama's job performance.

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Monday, 51 percent of respondents disapprove of Obama's job performance and 46 percent approve of it.

Obama's approval rating has dropped steadily each month since December, when it was 54 percent. His highest approval rating in a CNN poll was 76 percent in February 2009 shortly after he took office.

The new poll was conducted before the House on Sunday narrowly approved the Obama administration's signature domestic policy proposal: health care reform.

The measure, which Obama plans to sign on Tuesday, represents the biggest expansion of federal health care guarantees since Medicare and Medicaid were enacted more than four decades ago.

In fact, health care was the policy area that drew the second highest negative rating, with 58 percent registering disapproval. The highest negative rating was 62 percent for his handling of the federal deficit.

While his performance ratings have slid, Americans personally like Obama. The poll found that 70 percent of respondents approve of him as a person, and only 25 percent disapprove.

On the economy overall, 54 percent disapprove of his work and 43 percent approve. He scored well for his handling of the environment and education, as well as on national security.

"Obama scores some of his best numbers on 'commander-in-chief' issues - Afghanistan, Iraq, and terrorism," said Keating Holland, CNN polling director. "In January, 51% approved of Obama's handling of Afghanistan; that number is now 55%, an indication that the public has a positive view of the latest military offensive in that country."

The CNN poll was conducted on March 19-21 through telephone interviews with 1,030 adult Americans. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I'm happier with him now. I think he's finally found his stride and shown true leadership. People have to learn how to ignore the naysayers and doomsday predictors and pay attention to what a person actually does. Obama's shown true leadership over the past couple of months and I think it will only get better from now on.

It is no suprise that Obamas polls are going negative. It is futher no suprise that the house and senate fare even worse in the polls. Ignore the voters, who put you in the office – and they get angry.

CNN, infamous for your polls, which typically reflect the exact opposite of what another poll indicated the day before. I just read another poll indicating the President's approval rating rose. All of you in the media really control what Americans believe on a day to day basis. It's a wonder we get anything accomplished in America.

Unfortunately, polls are not always correct. Today, March 22, 2010 Gallup Daily Poll has President Obama approval rating at 50% and disapproval rating at 43%.

They way the Republicans and "Tea Party" reacted this weekend, with racial comments and Republican Representatives yellin " baby killer" and other statements: The silent majority will oust Republicans. THE GOP does not care about all Americans and unfrotunately, some Americans do not read they only listen to the right wing haters and fear mongers!

I am very proud of President Obama, he has fullfilled one of his promises and he has brought the economy back to recovery mode.

Wait till all the welfare queens find out that they're going to have to buy health insurance instead of going to the ER and having the American people pay their bills. There won't be much money left over to buy their crack and meth with.

What do they say about Republicans? They just had 8 years to come up with a health care plan. What did they do with that time?

Polls go up and they go down. But my President delivered on Healthcare. I can only imagine this is how the wealthy felt when the GOP rammed GW tax cut through. Though my guy's idea will help more people than theirs did there is a feeling of accomplishment. I guess we will have to wait and see what the GOP will do. Interesting that they have vowed to stop the "fix it" bill. Do they really not want to make this law better? Okay if they think it will work but the party of "no" will be working to keep the worst parts of the Senate bill.... that might not look so good on a commercial.

Who are you polling?????? Nobody I know! The news media and their polls are just like the republicans and their facts! Lies, fabrications and just a bunch of bull, to keep the fires stoked! I wish you'd all just go somewhere and steal another country so you can call it yours, like you did this one!

With a margin of error of +/- 3 points I don't see how this is a "majority" disapproval. In fact, it seems like a dead heat as it could be the other way i.e. 49% approval and 48% disapproval. However, it is not unusual for a president who has to make serious decisions in the face of difficult times (economy and the crisis of civility in this country) and lots of protests to lose popularity.

I don'y know who CNN and company has been talking to but it isn't most Americans. The President has been busy doing the people's work while CNN and other cable networks are busy showcasing "Tea Party" and Sarah Palin.
When was the last time you concentrated on reporting the news and not gosips? Leave the tabloid news to the Tabloids if you wish to remain a reputable news organization.
Long live our President! And may God continue to Bless our country, United States of Ameica! Amen.

Just like Bill Murray did in Ghostbusters, America got "slimed" , but it was by Obama and the moron Democrats for slamming this wildly unpopular and non-sensical health care plan. Slimey creatures that go around sliming innocent people.
