White House shrugs off Biden F-Bomb

Washington (CNN) – In the White House room where Abigail Adams used to air out her clean laundry, Vice President Joe Biden used some dirty language.

A microphone picked up Biden uttering the "F" word Tuesday in the majestic East Room of the White House, as President Obama signed the historic health care reform bill into law.

After delivering a rousing introduction of the president in which he praised Obama's "perseverance" and "clarity of purpose," Biden turned to embrace his boss.

As the crowd of approximately 300 people cheered wildly, Biden turned to Obama and said with a big smile, "This is a big f-- deal!"

The president did not react to the comment, apparently aware that the microphones may have picked up the words.

Shortly after the ceremony, White House Press Secretary used his Twitter feed to try and diffuse any controversy.

"And yes Mr. Vice President, you're right..." Gibbs tweeted from his @PressSec Twitter account.

An aide to the vice president pointed reporters seeking comment to Gibb's tweet.

The vice president is known for unscripted moments, but not in such a high-profile setting as a bill-signing ceremony in the East Room. According to the White House Historical Association, first lady Abigail Adams was famous for using the room to dry her laundry. President John F. Kennedy lay in state in the East Room after his assassination in 1963.

It was Lord Acton of the British House of Commons who once said, 'absolute power corrupts, absolutely'. And he never met Joe Biden, who is the poster boy for arrogance, shallowness, and one lacking in character. Thanks Joe for making this historic event dirty.

With the newly minted health care law, the GOP should be happy to know that mouth-washing with soap is now covered by insurance. Oh Joe ... you swear like a sailor (but Rahm has you beat). To the Dems ... thank you for the BFD! It is great to know my party still has the brass to make it happen!

Christ, this wins the lame non-story of the day award. Show me someone who's never used profanity and I'll show you someone much more screwed up!

Yep, Biden can be a little crass at times, but at least he wasn't pulling a Dick Cheney to Senator Leahy and telling someone to "F" off. :)

This just shows everyone how Dems can get away with comments like this but nobody else.

How low class can you get. This isn't a bunch of guys shooting the bull but a real no class act.

Total lack of class. Typical Joe Biden. All this celebration about health care reform is a joke. Somebody has to pay for all this "care" and it certainly won't be those who weren't paying before. Just another liberal entitlement program. It will be all of us who do work that can barely afford insurance now that will be paying more in premiums and taxes so that Obama & Biden can give everyone else $6,000 a year to buy insurance. Don't believe it? Use your common sense. Where is the government going to get $6,000 x 35,000,000 people?

It was a big f– deal. Sometimes big acts call for big words. Besides, I don't know if there's a single person out there who isn't aware of the meaning of his use of the word.

    Find something worthy to report.

After all the racial slurs, homophobic insults, shouting "YOU LIE", "baby killer", pep rallies, discourteous behavior, spitting, AND "Hell, No", I've heard over the course of the past year, I don't mind one "F" word. Now, it's time for GOOD MANNERS to prevail across our "One Nation Under God."
And I read the part of the bill that says, "Federal funds shall not be used for abortions."

Like we are shocked to hear that the pres and his lackey aren't decent people. I'm sure that is nothing compared to what he says in even less public situations. Surprise America, most politicians are filth in a pretty package.

Really? Really? Really? You're calling this a story? You've wasted an entire page reporting this?

Maybe the Republicans can take this story and run with it: "VP Biden is a swearing politician threatens the survival of our Judeo-Christian nation."

This is not a story and CNN editors know it.
