Condom sent to Democrat who voted for health care bill

Rep. Betty McCollum is a Democrat from Minnesota who voted for the health care bill.

Washington (CNN) - Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minnesota, was one of several members of Congress who reported receiving obscene and threatening letters after voting for the health care reform bill passed by Democrats on Sunday.

But her spokeswoman told CNN that inside one letter received Thursday was a condom, removed from its original packaging.

McCollum's spokeswoman Maria Reppas said Thursday that the congresswoman's district office in St. Paul received the condom in an envelope dated March 23, along with an anonymous typed letter reading: "Betty McCollum you've been dry f***** by the liberal party."

The condom had been removed from its original packaging and placed in a plastic bag, according to McCollum's district director. McCollum's office said the U.S. Capitol Police and local law enforcement are investigating the package along with another one received Thursday.

Her office also reported receiving part of a shredded American flag doused in gasoline and a typed letter addressed to McCollum, Rep. Keith Ellison, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Sen. Al Franken - all Democrats from Minnesota.

"Each of you receives part of a shredded American flag," the letter read. "It represents Obama and your liberal filth. Open the bag, it's covered in the stench you've brought to our government ... Because of you, we are now a country of dirt, shame, corruption and slime."

McCollum released a statement late Thursday responding to the threats.

"I will not back down in the face of attacks, threats, and violence," she said. "I do not regret my vote, and I will proudly stand in the face of opposition and defend my support of health care reform."

These ultra right wing, anti-health care wing-nuts need to be called what they are: terrorists. Regardless of how they choose to describe themselves they are ideologically in the same camp as Timothy McVeigh and Osama bin Laden. Hopefully the FBI will investigate these incidents and find out if these activities have occurred as the result of mentally ill individuals acting alone or as neo-fascist cells acting in concert. We cannot allow our government to be influenced by bands of ultra right wing terrorists who've worked themselves into a violent frenzy by exposing themselves to the mono-maniacal ravings of Limbaugh and Beck.

The intellect of these idiots is obvious. Any increased violence should be charged to FOX, Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Colter, Palin, and every other GOP talking head. Fox news has taken over the GOP and they are destroying the party. The only chance for them is for someone to get brave enough to establish a moderate republican platform, and break from the sinking ship! Most of this country that wins elections for candidates, are middle of the road independents. They are not right wing crazed fascist racist idiots.

Look at the people we are dealing with in America? A bunch of republicans that are using condoms, flags and gasolines to protest against something they know nothing about. Good for the represenative for not being intimidated by republicans or anyone for that matter. My famous quote is "If you don't stand up for something, you are willing to fall for anything".

LOL nice. As long as nobody is breaking any laws, they need to keep up the pressure and make these Democrats realize that they made a MASSIVE mistake.

This is the behavior I expect from these criminals. Shredding flags shows what they think of our country.

There are some sick people on the right and far right. Just can't get over having a black man in the White House as President.

The Republican politicians should know that if the violence escalates that they are fanning the flames, no one else as that joke Cantor tried to mislead, they ultimately will be held responsible politically, but more importantly "Legally".

    The Party of NO;
    No clue
    No class
    No solutions...

Only hateful vitriol which will ultimately catch up to you Repugnant, Revisionist, Republicans and bring you crashing and burning to the ground.

Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, you guys are running out of time, even Republicans have sensible people who will tire of this game.

All of this hate and insanity comes in the form of Health Care. Can you imagine what will happen if the Obama Administration does something to help immigrants. The wing-nuts who don't go completely blind with racist rage and madness will go nuclear.

One day soon the Repugs will reap what they have sown. They are purveyers of violence, ignorance, hatred, and backwardness. They begin to look more and more like their Nazi forbears, now beginning their own Kristalnacht. The DO intend to kill Democrats, ultimately targeting the president himself. In the end they'll swallow their own poison, like Hitler.

While certaily not all Republicans or even conservatives are of this ilk, It shows how when an uninformed electorate is riled up with misinformation and lies how they will react.
For all the name calling violence and vile acts of recent days and in the past months, you have yet to here a Democratic leader come out and call them Nazi's for thier tactics.
These are afterall the same type of fear tactics Hitler used to fire up the German people in the early 30's.
The similarity of name calling a and the result are astonishingly similar.
Be careful America of what you believe. READ THE BILL FOR YOUR SELF.

I feel so sorry for u. This is all those, NRA , polluting, gun toting Republicans who sent those letters. I would say make them write a 1500000 word apology to all senators both parties. those evil Republicans (Especially the young ones) Liberals should stand up sew together and start tossing dirt back with a new note that says "All Young Republicans should apologize to the other side seriously, and it will result in Jail time 25 yrs to Life. It is real. If I were her husband, I would go after them myself.

Normally this is the stuff you'd report to the Secret Service and then just ignore as the ravings of a frustrated right-winger. But in this case–as the freaks are trying to hype up media attention at their anger–I agree with the Democrats as they document every bit of it: expose every sick or violent comment or action until Americans recoil in disgust.

This is the logical result of over a years worth of Beck, Rush, Palin and other right fear-mongering about Socialism, Armageddon, and Government Takeover that is finally 'coming home to roost'. And GOP leaders allowing it to happen is passive approval: voters need to evaluate whether that is the kind of behavior they wish to reward in November.

How symbolic that the anonymous hater shredded an American flag–that's what they're doing to the principles our country is based on. I hope all these people who are trying to terrorize Democratic legislators are brought to justice.

In the next election, I will campain and work my behind off to help unseat every Retardlican't in office . I can't believe that people could vote for such scumbags. They don't care about people, they just want to play games to stop Obama.
It won't work, and they are making fools of themselves for all the world to see.

To say that the American people didn't want the healthcare bill is showing more of their ignorance. How could ignorant people like they are, even think they could speak for the American people? They are so stupid it's unreal. They listen to Sarah, Glen Rush and Fox news, and make complete asses of themselves. Enjoy Costs Rica, Rush, and good riddance to bad garbage.

I really wish people would just see the big picture. I am quite sure a majority of Republicans agree with the plan but are scared to say so! They do not want to lose their power! This is all Power! Money and Power. They have all the money and power being in office. I don't see people up in arms with the Billions of Dollars being spent on two wars. Bottom line..... No one said CHANGE was going to be easy! If you believe it would be you are no better than the morons who watch Faux News religiously or believe Sara Palin is about making America better or making her purse bigger!

Reactions gracing your HCR Law is quite pathetic and sad too. America used to be examplary to others on common fronts. Whether Health Care or not, Americans must understand that it is not Obama or Dems that they are fighting but rather that internal cohessiveness your country's always had that is suffering now. America please unite!
