Obama heads to Iowa to sell health care overhaul

ALT TEXT

Washington (CNN) - It's the state that launched him towards the White House. Thursday, Barack Obama returns to Iowa for the second time since his inauguration as president, to tout the health care reform bill that he signed into law on Tuesday.

Obama is scheduled to speak at the University of Iowa in Iowa City Thursday afternoon. The speech is part of a White House plan to begin aggressively selling the benefits of the health care overhaul and give some political cover to Democratic lawmakers jittery about their political futures, according to Democratic officials familiar with the plans.

Iowa seems to be the natural location for the speech. In May 2007, then-presidential candidate and senator from Illinois Barack Obama first announced his health care plan "launching a grassroots campaign for reform that led directly to the legislation passed this week," Thursday's daily White House schedule states.

Obama's victory in January 2008 in his party's Iowa caucuses boosted Obama into front-runner status along with Hillary Clinton in the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination, a fight he ultimately won when Clinton dropped out in June of that year. Obama ended up winning the state by 10 points, a switch in fortunes for the Democrats, as President George W. Bush narrowly won Iowa four years earlier.

President Obama made his first trip to Iowa on April 22 of last year. Obama marked Earth Day in Newton, Iowa by announcing a new initiative to lease federal waters for the purpose of generating electricity from wind and ocean currents.

Now the president returns to Iowa again to tout his biggest legislative victory yet in his young presidency.

President Obama and the Democrats have been a huge disappointment. This healthcare bill is awful. The budget is out of control. The economy terrible. President Obama will likely go down in history as being one of the worst presidents in history. Hopefully we'll get rid of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in our upcoming election.

If Obamacare is so good, WHY does Mr. President have ot continue spending tax payers money to SELL his plan???

It would appear that he foreced something upon the American Public that is NOT wanted, and needs to be taken OUT of LAW. Social Justice is NOT the way to help the problem. Does he NOT have a brain???
Most puppets DON'T, so why should one think that he does. WRONG!!!

people only want to hear about insurance and how they will be able to pay for it. which i know that every sick person gets a check every month so why cant we subtract it out of that. but the first thing is making multi million doolar medicine enterprises so that meds want cost as much as long as we keep putting that off people will keep paying high premeums

If this is such a good idea, why the sell job? Shouldn't the President be worried about fixing the economy instead of continuing to harm it?

An attempt to convince the American public that the lying, cheating, conniving, bribes, backroom deals from behind locked doors to pass the Healthcare debacle, really was not done by lying, cheating, conniving and bribing? Good luck with that. The majority of Americans have finally woke up. Then the people will get to vote on the message and the messenger.

He could not sell it before they passed the bill. Why try now? The bill is actually an affront to most Americans except the dems and liberals. Every time he talks about the healthcare bill, his ratings go down, down, down so on second thought, let him speak. I wonder if the MSM will cover the protest of the speech.

Why does he need to sell this intitlement program? I thought it was so great, half of his voters are to lazy and cheap to get insurance would rather hit the crack pipe and roll dice and let the dumb people work.

It's ridiculous people are even asking questions about this bill now... this goes to show how poorly reported the issue was in the news. The media would pit Republican vs. Democrat like it was a WWE match to narrate.....yet never post the actual facts for people to make their own decision.

Wonder how much taxpayer money will be spent by him to sell us on what they rammed through. Must be really good if he has to sell it after the fact. Normally that is done before.
