Health care bill anger a sign of the times?

Health care reform brought out many protesters such as these Monday in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Health care reform brought out many protesters such as these Monday in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Washington (CNN) - Americans have always exercised their Democratic rights under the U.S. Constitution to speak out against the government.

Amid the bitter fight over health care reform, a round of hate-filled messages and sometimes violent actions toward members of Congress has prompted calls to ease up on the rhetoric.

Experts say that although protests against social issues such as health care reform are nothing new for the country, such reaction to a landmark bill's passing is uncommon.

"It's unusual that you get this kind of outrage and response to a piece of legislation," said historian Robert Dallek, author of the upcoming book "The Lost Peace: Leadership in a Time of Horror and Hope."

"Of course, it's being fanned in some ways by Republican leaders who keep saying majorities are against this legislation, when in fact there is a pretty even divide in the country, from what the polling data shows," he added.

The Republican leadership has been far too complicit in this than they seem to be willing to admit. When they convince their constituents with lies that their "Muslim", "non-citizen" President wants to "take away their freedom" and "kill their Grandmothers" with this bill, they can't be surprised at reactions like what we're seeing now.

Let's force people not be able to have abortions for any reason, then deny the working poor health care for the babies they bring into the world. That's the Repulican way! What love for those babies the Repulican hypocrites have.

It IS a sign that Republican insitement after two years is getting the loons out. The even scarier bit is that Republicans have been pushing wacky guns laws (gun in bars, concealled carry, etc.). It is as if they are hoping to spark violence. If anything happens April 19 (Waco, OKC, Columbine anniversaries), we'll know where the root cause is. I hope they are ready to take the blame.

All of your name callers need to stop. If you aren't open minded, then go away.

I've read the bills. This will do nothing to reduce the cots of healthcare in the US. Not until people are responsible for their health will it actually change. If you weight 250lbs and are 5'2", then you have a problem. You should pay more for insurance. You should be required to go through programs. Why should I have to pay more for your decisions.

As for healthcare, yes, everyone should be required to buy it. As for punishing employers, that is not going to solve the unemployment issue. Obama and Liberals are creating an entitlement, not solving any problems.

Republicans screwed up, now the US has to pay for it. What's best for the country isn't always the complete left or complete right. It's the middle. Deal with that. If you can't go live in Europe or another country.

My friends overseas don't understand what took us so long to fix the health system, let alone why we don't have a single payor system. Then again they never understood Bush.

Sue, the difference is that Bush lied us into a war he didn't even try to pay for, lied about torture, lied about spying...all things that are illegal activities, by the way. (And every time we protested, we were called traitors and worse by the right.) What has Obama done? Gee, he's signed an agreement to limit nuclear weapons, he's bringing the troops home (slowly, but still), he's trying to close the torture prison, Gitmo, amid Republican howls for it to remain because they AGREE with illegal torture, he's given the middle class a tax break, he's made allies around the world after Bush was determined to make us an island, he's stabilized Wall Street and stocks are higher than they have been in a decade, and oh, yes, that really evil one, he wanted all Americans to have health care so they won't go bankrupt when they have a illness, or go untreated because some insurance zombie denies their claim for treatment, or watch their child die because they can't afford the bills for his cancer treatment. Wow, he really IS a bad guy. Why are you mad again?

These right wing nuts only think they are the majority when in reality they are just a very loud and small minority. They don't seem to have the brain capacity to understand that they lost the elections. They think that just because they shout louder that they are in the majority. I guess the voices they hear in their heads make them feel like there's a crowd behind them.

O.D.B. Did you know that they said the same things about Social Security and Medicare? And I bet you're on both of those awful government programs aren't you. Did you know that they are government programs? I bet not.

The same people that are against healthcare probably already have their OWN healthcare. Plus, some of their antics equal the same actions as when their team in sports loses. Turn over cars, throw bricks, set fires, you know, dumb things, stupid things, that undereducated people do. Such losers. I think that we should pass a law that states every dumb person should have a large "L" tattooed on their foreheads in order that we can AVOID them! I cannot stand someone who does NOT have at least SOME common sense! Bullies are S-O-O-O-O 90's...Sam

  11. 8 Years of King George II and now the Landed Gentry Scream “Let Them Eat Cake” to the Unemployed and Uninsured Serfs!

    Memo to the Tea Partiers:
    Subject: Why?

    1. When the Reds voted YES in 2003 for Prescription drug coverage for MEDICARE Part D when the CBO score said it would ADD to the deficit an additional 394 BILLION dollars.

WHY were there no tea baggers protesting?

    2. When the Reds voted YES in 2003 for Tax Cuts for the rich when the CBO score said it would ADD to the deficit an additional 349 BILLION dollars.

WHY were there no tea baggers protesting?

    3. When the Reds voted YES in 2001 for Tax Cuts when the CBO score said it would ADD to the deficit an additional 1.3 TRILLION?

WHY were there no tea baggers protesting?

Then a black man was elected as President and now these same cons have had a “Come to Jesus” meeting on “fiscal responsibility” and are sorrowful about “loading years of debt on the backs of our grandbabies“.

    1. When the Dems voted FOR health care and every Red voted NO for health care reform in 2010 when the CBO score said it would SUBTRACT 1.3 TRILLION from the deficit.

WHY were the tea bagger protesting?

I thought the Tea Party was for working class Americans AND deficit reduction?

Please forgive us if some of us think the tea bagging movement has NEVER had anything to do with deficit reduction or “smaller government“ spending!

The majority support health care reform and president Obama. Loud shouting gets played in the news. And I'm sure all those tea partiers will vote for the status quo in November. Same ol' same ol' republicans who are working as hard as they can to bankrupt the country on philosophy that we have to bankrupt the country in order to force cuts in social security, medicaid and medicare. They did pretty good under Bush and are really mad that the new health care reform will be paid for by taxes and by the socialism that is the very heart of what insurance means. Insurance IS socialism.

Obama won 2008 because the republicans lost there way and didn't listen to the people just like what is happening now.

Obama got Nobel peace prize FOR WHAT The only thing Obama has done for America is divide the country.

Healthcare Bill passed thru bribery and extortion.

They say no to everything because this country leadership thinks that they are better than us and do not need to listen to us. Allot of people will be using there jobs soon but not soon enough.

Most of these angry protesters have no clue what is in the bill. Have they actually read it? We are not headed for European socialism. And by the way, the Scandanavian countries (which for you Republicans are part of the EU) have the highest living standards and best life expectancy in the world so maybe some socialism is not a bad thing.

It is sad to see so much anger rise, the only things its doing is affecting our health. No matter if we agree or disagree with Congress, we will still survive, keeping living, this will not change what has happen.

The current heated debate around health care is a front to get republicans elected with the goal of keeping the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

Republicans drove this country to the brink of the next great depression and they are angry at failing to achieve that devastation. Their goal is to bring the middle class to their knees and have "cheap labor" lining the streets for greater profits for the rich.

Now it is time for the Democrats and this President to move onto jobs, energy and immigration reforms and get them passed as well.

If the Republicans want to join good if not then lets us the people go it alone without them.

    Enough of the fear/hate/obstructionism/purity ideology.

Also, we are the United States. If you have a problem with that then either leave or try and get your state to secede; but stop you fear/hate/obstructionism because you don't want to be part of the whole.

I wonder just how many numbers these whackos have? They keep threatening wait till November. Most thinking sensible Americans are watching these imbeciles and thinking - good, let's wait till November. The whackos are so mad that a black President is in charge that they can't handle it. No matter that he's intelligent, elegant, eloquent. Dammit, he's black, he has no right leading this country! Hah!
