U.S., Russia reach arms control treaty

Washington (CNN) - The United States and Russia have reached "the most comprehensive arms control agreement in nearly two decades," President Barack Obama said Friday.

The agreement cuts by about one-third "the nuclear weapons that the United States and Russia will deploy," the president said.

The new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) will last 10 years, and builds on the previous agreement that expired in December.

"It significantly reduces missiles and launchers," Obama told reporters at the White House. "It puts in place a strong and effective verification regime. And it maintains the flexibility that we need to protect and advance our national security, and to guarantee our unwavering commitment to the security of our allies."

If things get nasty with the current Axis of Evil (North Korea, Iran, Iraq, various other places), it'd be good to know that Russia wouldn't be part of the Axis.

Good, we don't need nuclear weapons. We have plenty of other ways to kill each other off.

Someone had better check the agreement very closely.

Interesting, CNN isn't mentioning a story that appeared in the London Times today – about how absolutely badly Obama treated PM Netanyahu during his recent visit. Israel is incensed, then again is this really a surprise.

The Obama administration is not a friend of the State of Israel. Anyone with average intelligence should have know this would be the case, even before Obama was elected.

How can someone aligned so closely with people like the Rev Wright, et al ever be a true friend of the State of Israel?

    Thank you President Obama!

Great things can happen when you actually talk to the other side instead of strong arming them into agreeing with BEFORE the meeting.

We are fortunate to have you in office as opposed to the con war-monger.

  10. Save America, impeach the treasonous republicans

I know the right wingnuts would rather invade Russia, but I think diplomatic efforts will keep us safer. Another job well done by President Obama.

Addressing ALL fronts SIMULTANEOUSLY, and effectively.

Y'all remember " I- can- barely- do- one- thing- at- a- time- McCain" I shudder to think of this man at the helm during these precarious times.

Keep up the great work President Obama.

Credit to both President Obama and Bush. The war in Iraq and the management of Iran allowing for an open opposition have removed the threats to peace and now we can begin to lay down our weapons. The world is much safer than it was 10 years ago.

Good! Finally it is about time. However we need to make sure Russia is keeping close tabs on the inventory due to the power of the Russian mafia bribing officials.

This is laughable! The Russians have absolutely no respect for Obama! They will not honor anything with him. They see him as a clown and they think he is beneath them!

So, the U.S. went along with the previous agreements and the Russians did not. Each side was to have no more than 2,200 nukes at this point in time according to the agreement.

The Russians now have over 2,700 nukes. The Russians did not hold up their end of the deal in 1991 or the 2002 agreements. So, what makes anyone (other than liberals) think the Russians are going to stick to this agreement.

Amazing. Curious about the details. Ironically, if this is as good as Obama's summary statement, it would be big news unto itself. It could be overlooked in the midst of the healthcare dustup.
