Washington (CNN) – President Obama believes the Vice President's wife has a thing or two to teach others about higher education in today's economy. Mr. Obama has asked Jill Biden to convene a White House summit on community colleges later this year.

Courtney O'Donnell, Biden's communications director, told CNN the summit "will be an opportunity for community college leaders, students, education experts, business leaders, and others to share with the administration and with one another the innovative ways they are educating our way to a better economy." O'Donnell said the White House will release additional information on the summit in the coming weeks.

Mrs. Biden will introduce the president on Tuesday as he makes the announcement, and signs the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act. The legislation, which made changes to the original health care bill passed by the House, also overhauls the student loan system and makes investments in the community colleges. The announcement will take place at Northern Virginia Community College – the same school where Mrs. Biden teaches English.

Mrs. Biden has taught at community colleges in both Delaware and Virginia for three decades.

Way to go Dr. Biden. I can't recall the former VP's wife doing anything.

The cost of private colleges is cost prohibitive at best. I think that drawing attention, and making people re-focus on community colleges as a viable alternative is wise.

I was not aware that Mrs. Biden had been teaching at community colleges for so long. This knowledge needs to be trumpeted and made known, not just in regards to Prof. Biden but also all the other highy qualified professors that teach at these affordable colleges; it might help to dispel the community college 'stigma' of them not being served by quality instructors.

The best word I can find to describe the present state of Republicans is "LIMP"

Given the Vice President's unfortunate comment regarding our historic health care bill, I think it would be best for the Biden's to lay low for a while, at least, until he learns to curb his language. You don't have to be very smart to know how to do that.

This is the same lady who insulted Hillary Clint when she was appointed to state department. Neither her or her husband seem real adept at keeping their mouths shut when appropriate.Oh well!

A rational way to reduce the cost of college is to complete the first two years of an undergraduate degree at the local community college. We need to beef up our Community Colleges and make them essentially two-year universities. Their mission as trade schools can continue so that we can be provided with skilled welders, mechanics, opticians, etc.

There is no downside to this. Building up our community colleges is the most cost-effective way to move students toward a bachelor's degree, which is the best way to move them into the middle and upper-middle class.

John McCain proposed using community colleges to retrain unemployed workers and all the Republicans applauded when he said it in his acceptance speech, so they should not have a problem with it.

Of course, many community colleges are locally funded, so a small increase in local taxes might be required. It would probably be less per month than most Americans spend on bottled water in a day.

Any inovation on improving education is a plus. nobody ever suffered from education. I also believe that we should know about our world a liittle bit more.

Thank you Dr. Jill Biden because you are a mother who can inspire other mothers and their children to get an education. Dr. Jill Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama both have the credentials to speak to our country with intelligence and integrity.

This is a very important step toward a better economy. Maybe some of the unemployed can become retrained for employment.

She's a smart woman, and community colleges are playing an increasing role as traditional college prices have made them unattainable to so many. I'm glad he is tapping her for this and I hope her role expands.

Community colleges are the gold mines of our nation because they reach out further and dig deeper into our society than the traditional four-year institutions of higher learning, and by doing so they unearth contributors which might otherwise have never been uncovered. The diversity of real-life experiences of these local community students, when combined with the two-year Associate of Arts education they receive before transferring to a university to complete their four-year Bachelor of Arts, adds to the quality of class discussion at the university and the quality of the graduates who continue on to graduate school or enter the workforce. Even those community college students who simple take several specialty classes to enhance their understanding of a particular subject prove that the community college system is a gold mine. The high quality of education at these institutions reflects the devotion, and the desire to return something to their community, of the professors of the community colleges who often could be working for better pay in other areas of academia. America is fortunate to have community colleges and a leader who understands the importance of them.

Another give away for Education,What ever happened to earning your way? Why is the Tax Payer going to be on the hook for all these grants. I can understand student loans but just giving money away to keep a student in college? Where is all this money comming from, last I heard they still have yet to discover a tree that produces money.

Dr Jill Biden is the logical administration choice to be in leadership of this initiative. I went to Hudson Valley CC in Troy NY and it was an excellent two years of college before going onto a four year college as a full junior. The cost was cheap but the education gained was excellent. Everyone should start at a community college.

    Go Jill

"Educating our way to a better economy"? From what I can see, many are graduating from our institutions of higher learning with educations far less impressive than they were forty or fifty years ago. Our educational system has been so dumbed down and the focus so scattered that we are falling farther behind other countries every year. As for the Heath Care and Education Reconciliation Act; well, I've heard of more idiotic things but offhand can't think of them. The student loan provision had, and has no place in a healthcare bill. I guess it's not so surprising after all why our children aren't learning. If our government leaders are an example, we're doomed.

Shouldn't she be addressed as Dr. Biden in this article, instead of Mrs. Biden? It seems like the article is trying to downplay her education and her role as a faculty member.

  23. Former Nude Models like Scott Brown make great "conservative" role models for our nation's youth

Biden's silence on Voyeur-gate is apalling!!!
Why is everyone being so hard on Steele? He only allowed a conservative family-values staffer get a Boehner at the donors' expense, and then submitted the FEC filing. This is nothing to get excited about. Once this issue popped up, Steele took full personal responsibility by firing the staffer whose expenses were approved by higher-ups. Why would the RNC re-imburse Erik Brown with other donor's money if Erik Brown is himself a donor who got the Boehner? There should be more important issues that arouse the public's attention than the RNC paying for Erik Brown's Boehner.
