Washington (CNN) – Florida Gov. Charlie Crist picked up the endorsement of Hall of Fame football coach Don Shula on Wednesday, Crist's Senate campaign announced.

"Governor Crist's conservative policies have kept our taxes low and allowed our businesses to thrive, and he has the character it takes to work first and foremost for his fellow Floridians," the football legend said in a written statement. "Washington needs a leader like Charlie Crist to stand up for Florida in our nation's capital."

Shula is best known for coaching the 1972 Miami Dolphins to a perfect 17-0 record, winning back-to-back Super Bowls, and founding a chain of steakhouses.

Crist faces a stiff challenge in the upcoming Republican senatorial primary from former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio. The two will face-off August 24 for the chance to run in the general election.

Don Shula knows football and guided the only NFL team to an undefeated season. I will trust his opinion of politics without investigating further.

Celebrities know it all and we should just listen to them and let them decide for us who to vote for. This makes it simple for us simple minded folks...

    as biden would say, BFD...

Florida has done wonderful under Crist – just look at the foreclosures, many failed businesses, and ensconced discriminatory legislation against gays, wherein the latter is particularly hypocritical given Crist's sham marriage.

    Stick to football, Shula.

Yeah, so?? Mr. Shula may have been an exceptionally talented and successful football coach. But why does anyone care who he endorses for political office? How does going to he Super Bowl make his opinions about government relevant?

    Whatever.

well that is 2 votes. Crist 's only hope is to run as Independent. The Cuban crook is only going to get the Dade county vote. You can not believe that the Panhandle will vote for Rubio, nor will anyone north of Boca Raton vote for anyone in South Florida.have some one check to see if Rubio like the other Cubans politicians paid back their School aide or medical and foodstamps that was so graciously given to them when they needed it ,now that they are wealthy lets find out how many paid back the Benefits that the average American can not get, Their is a big group of wealthy politicians that have become GREEDY GOP politicians.

Hope the Florida republican candidates eat each other for lunch, as the trend seems to go these days. Time for a Democrat to take that State House!
