Giuliani backs Rubio over Crist in Florida contest

Rudy Giuliani tried unsuccessfully to win Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's endorsement during the 2008 presidential race.
Rudy Giuliani tried unsuccessfully to win Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's endorsement during the 2008 presidential race.

(CNN) – During his ill-fated presidential bid in 2008, Rudy Giuliani aggressively sought Charlie Crist's endorsement, hoping that the Florida governor's support would hand him a primary win in the state and shake up the GOP nominating contest.

Crist instead gave a last-minute endorsement to John McCain, who went on to win the pivotal primary. The former New York City mayor's chances of becoming president died then and there.

Giuliani's payback? He's endorsing Marco Rubio, Crist's opponent in this year's Republican Senate primary.

Giuliani will campaign with Rubio, the former state House speaker, in Miami on Monday morning.

"Marco Rubio is one of the Republican Party's true rising stars," Giuliani said in a statement released by the Rubio camp. "He's a bold leader who will bring common sense to Washington where it's badly needed. I look forward to campaigning with him on Monday."

McCain, the winner of that 2008 Florida primary, is supporting Crist.

Met Mr. Guiliani once... he's an arrogant man with a well-developed sense of self-appreciation.

Mr. Rubio and Mr. Guiliani deserve each other. They're both sinister little twerps cut from the same tired, nasty threadbare bolt of cloth.

Good luck to both of them!

Mr. Rubio just received the kiss of death! Every candidate that Mr. a noun, a verb and 911 has endorsed has lost. While Mr. Giuliani considers Rubio a rising star, it's hard to take serious anything that this burnt out has been says. Florida rejected him before and they'll do the same again. Mr. Rubio might have had a chance before, but now that Mr. N,V,911 endorsed him it's all over except for the party.

Why would Floridians care what a failed mayor from New York thinks?
Am I the only one that remembers he dropped out of the Senatorial race because New Yorkers didn't like him? then he chose not to run for Mayor again because of the polls?
His much ballyhooed leadership during 9/11 cost lives and was non-existant until a day or tow later. By then the Feds had stepped in and all he did was give interviews.

Rudy always like people who lied and cheated.
Remember the guy he suggested for DHS? He was a fraud and I think is in jail now.
An endorsement by Rudy should automatically disqualify

Guiliani's endorsement doesn't mean squat to anyone anywhere.

Why can't Republicans find candidates of above average intelligence who actually know something about government, foreign affairs, domestic problems, history, etc.? I could go to the local mall and find 41 men or women who would make better Senators than the 41 losers they sent to Washington. My state is foremost among them as our Republican delegation to Washington, headed by Hutchison and Cornyn, is probably the most undistinguished group of men and women that could be found in our noble state. Only Rick Perry, our governor, is even less qualified.

There is something about Republicans that wants less than mediocre talent.

every time I hear Guiliani or see his grin, he reminds me of the Grinch. Didn't like him when he was the mayor, tried to like him after 9/11, and now despise this sleazeball with a passion. Rubio is crazy, and Rudy G is a sociopath. A marriage made in heaven.

Rudy is just engaging in political payback, the oldest game in the book. If Rubio thinks getting the endorsement of a liberal former NYC mayor will help him, he is even dumber than I thought.

If you people in Florida have any sense you will stick with Crist, Rubio is going to be giving illegals all kinds of breaks, just like our senator Menendez her in NJ, they want to give illegals in state tuition even though they are not citizens. You will reap what you soy.

    WELL !

If Giuliani says so, then Rubio must be the one NOT to support.

After all that is said and done Giuliani is just another sour grapes republican who can't wait to lash out at someone even if it is another republican.

A decent Republican like Crist is better off without the likes of Rudy (Toot toot his own horn) Giuliani in his corner.

Not sure why we care what this guy says or thinks or who he supports or doesn't support. He was mayor New York nearly a decade ago. He is neither popular nor particularly astute.

Carlton Finkbeiner was mayor of Toledo during the same time period. How come we don't ask him who he favors in the Florida race? Or some other random former Mayor?
