Washington (CNN) – Rep. Mark Kirk, the Illinois Republican seeking President Obama's old Senate seat, raised $2.2 million in the first quarter of 2010, and has more than $3 million in the bank, his campaign said Wednesday.
"Illinois voters have a clear choice in this election to change direction, create jobs and restore integrity to the State of Illinois," the five-term congressman said in a written statement.
Kirk is set to face Democratic nominee and Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias in November. Current Illinois Sen. Roland Burris, a Democrat, will not seek a full term for the seat he was appointed to after Obama became president.
The Giannoulias campaign has not released its own fundraising totals for the first quarter, but did respond to the Kirk figures.
"Mark Kirk's campaign fundraising reports should be looked at two ways: as an invoice for services rendered on behalf of corporate special interests, and as a promissory note for future obstruction of President Obama's agenda and on behalf of those interests," said Giannoulias campaign manager Michael Rendina in a statement.
The Illinois race has already seen a flurry of attacks from both campaigns, and even the White House has weighed in.
In March, Obama senior adviser and Chicago native David Axelrod gave an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, where he criticized Kirk for telling a group of Republicans that if elected, he will, "lead the effort to repeal this [health care] bill."
Giannoulias has been the target in recent months of a series of attacks stemming from time he spent as a loan officer at Broadway Bank, a firm run by his family that he says is now facing insolvency.
Mark Kirk has come out against so much, but he hasn't stated what exactly he is for. Saying "no" to everything will not move our state forward.
Being against the bogus health care bill will give any candidate a significant increase in votes. By being for the government takeover Giannoulias is all done. Another republican pick up one of many in the upcoming election
You do have to wonder if Mr. Kirk is really going to lead a charge to repeal a law that really has to show any effect. What is his alternative to the current health care law? I'd like to see that.
Will some of this money go towards Kirk's wardrobe, like Palin, or to exotic dancers, like Steele?
Funny but I truly do NOT believe this man could do or is even willing to do anything he's spuing from his month...........................other than rep American's off even more then the GOP'ers.
As an Illinois resident, the "Clear Choice" is not Mark Kirk.
Rep. Mark kirk wants to repeal health care reform. Illinois vote no for Kirk!
"Mark Kirk's campaign fundraising reports should be looked at two ways: as an invoice for services rendered on behalf of corporate special interests, and as a promissory note for future obstruction of President Obama's agenda and on behalf of those interests."
And the tea baggers hate him cause he really digs their bags, really digs them, oh dunk me baby
How do you spell politics? M-o-n-e-y.
Glad to hear that Mike Kirk is running for the office....better than having a Democratic crook in office!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Giannoulias is sleazy. If this doesn't prove it, his shady banking history certainly does. As a Chicagoan, I want elected officials that never stepped foot in my my city, democrat or republican, as the politics within city limits rub off badly on anyone from here.
Raising $$ this year for the GOP is easier than ever.
The recession must be over – or republicans sure have a lot of money to donate: wonder how much money comes from those "out of state" ???
Its hard to believe after the orgy of corruption we recently witnessed in the U.S. Senate among the Democrats with the Louisiana Purchase, the Cornhusker Kickback, the Florida Gatoraide, and the $60 billion union payoff that anybody could seriously be thinking about rewarding the massive arrogance and corruption by voting for a Democrat in Nov!!!!
November 2010 = Democrat Bloodbath.
Let the slaughter begin.
Given his banking history, Giannoulias has no business discussing someone else's "corporate social interests." Obama has made a pinata out of bankers, and I'm confused how he will defend and support the dem in this race. The repubs will definitely pick up senate seats in DE, AR, ND, IN. They should pick up CO, NV, PA. They have a shot at CA and WI. Not sure where IL fits in, but having a corrupt banker as the candidate does not help the dems.
Let me see IF I have this straight......... Republicans are going to run against the Healthcare Bill that will SAVE thousands of American lives.
Republicans will run against the Healthcare Bill that has protected people from being denied healthcare because of preexisting conditions.
Republican are going to run for office by telling Americans that the Healthcare Bill which will SAVE LIVES, prevent corporations from discriminatory practices, help Americans not have to file bankruptcy because of the high cost of healthcare?
Republicans are delusional. I am looking forward to the GOP making a case against SAVING AMERICAN LIVES!
