(CNN) - A week after Sarah Palin asked Republican National Committee officials to remove her name from an invitation that suggested she might attend a series of GOP fundraising events, the former Alaska governor made clear she is a strong supporter of the organization's embattled chairman, Michael Steele.
"I support Michael Steele. I am glad he is the leader of the party, administratively," Palin told Fox News' Sean Hannity Wednesday. "If those within the party are choosing to go a different direction, his term is up in a number of months and they can vote someone else in. But I think he is doing a great job."
The comments come amid speculation Palin is seeking to distance herself from Steele and the RNC after news surfaced the organization expensed a night out a risqué Los Angeles nightclub for donors earlier this year and ran up large bills for luxury hotel stays and private jet travel.
But a Palin adviser told CNN that Palin's request to be removed from the invitation for the events - timed to coincide with this week's Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans - was simply because she never planned on attending the events in the first place. Palin is slated to speak Friday at the SRLC, a gathering of top Republican officials and an early cattle call for potential 2012 presidential candidates.
In her comments Wednesday, the former Republican vice presidential nominee also hailed Steele as an "outsider" who is trying to change the Republican Party.
"The machine is tough I think to penetrate," she said. "I think it's been good to have an independent outsider to create some change in the Republican Party. I support him."

Sarah Palin's is perhaps the worst endorsment of them all. Think about it, Michael, do you really want someone who is known to be a serial liar (in fact, had one of her lies chosen 'Lie of the Year'), a gun-totting closet racist and homophobe, who can't think any faster than a glacier (unless the answer is written on her hand) and uses her children as props for politcial gain endorsing you - for anything?!
Sarah Palin also thinks she is a credible political candidate!
It is very clear that the GOP has lost its way. The Conservative Movement has taken a unfortunate detour. Intellectual conservative giants like William F. Buckley and Patrick Moynihan would cringe at the take over by Sarah Palin and the Tea Party supporters.
Who cares? Sarah aPALlINg will never get the nomination, nor should she. I wish she would just distance herself from humankind or go to Russia that she can she from her house. She lives in a fantasy that she has something to say. By the way, that hopey, changey thing is working just fine.
I cannot wait to hear Michale Steele defend Virginia's Governor and his new Confederate History Month. A real outsider...I highly doubt it. He seems more like the geeky kid in school with such a low self esteem that who would do and say anything to get to sit at the popular kid table at lunch.
We now have to deal with a idiot who refuse to shut up. CNN why are you giving Sarah Palin so much air than David Shusta? I would perfer David over Sarah at least he knows what he is doing. People in this world get a little bit of fame and it goes to their head and Sarah is a arrowhead and still she is dumb than dumber.
I'd like to see this woman distance herself totally fro society! Distance herself from Steele is OK but for herself, she needs to go off somewhere out of sight, out of mind...
Palin had better be careful – she may have to appologize to Rush Limbaugh!
"But I think he is doing a great job."
Why does this remind me of the infamous words of George W. Bush in the devastating aftermath of Katrina: "Your doin' a heck of a job, Brownie"???
Wowsers . . . .the GOP and all of it's off-shoots are in such big trouble. Do they even know it????
"Independent outsider" = someone who'll take your hard-earned money and spend it on their own selfish pleasures.
Steele = Lesbian bondage club visits, expensive hotel stays
Palin = Wardrobe, clothes, hair and an excuse to not have to take care of your special needs child
Yep, the two are peas in a pod!
Well they both know a little something about running up the tab on someone elses dollar!
Palin and her former boss McCain are both chameleons, that change positions according to how the situation suits them. Thanks god that you rescued us all from letting them lead the country!
More comments from white trash. GOP is the party of losers
Of course she thinks hes doing a great job.... hes doing nothing.... and anybody in the party of no who needs a great leader of the no can look no further than steele or palin.
Steele may lead the Republicans, but Palin leads the Loons.
I hope Steele enjoyed this 'kiss of death' from Miss Moose. Looks like it was full-mouthed, with lots of tongue.
Beware.... Sarah Palin is an alien. She sheds her skin every 12th day and feeds on uranium. Dont trust her..... she stole my brownies!!
She will go down in history as the biggest carpetbagger of the modern times and will make Bernie Madoff look a schoolboy.
That endorsement sounds familiar: Remember "Heckuva job Brownie"? The GOP sees their party foundering after their circular firing squad.
Something is seriously wrong with this women . She makes a negative comment on everyone , but herself. She needs to be check for drugs. Go right ahaed and put Sarah Palin as the GOP chairwomen and see how many mistakes she will make .
first. that is all.
Palin would think that Humpty Dympy was doing a great job when he fell of that wall too. IDIOT!!!
In palin fantasy land steele is doing a great job. For those of us stil residing on earth, not so much. At least in what his job is supposed to be. He is doing a great job for the country by reminding us again and again what a bunch of happless buffoons the republicon party is comprised of.
Do you suppose she wants to dance with Michele Bachman for $2000?
Of course she is for Michael Steele. They both have the same agenda, make and spend that money.
