(CNN) - A week after Sarah Palin asked Republican National Committee officials to remove her name from an invitation that suggested she might attend a series of GOP fundraising events, the former Alaska governor made clear she is a strong supporter of the organization's embattled chairman, Michael Steele.
"I support Michael Steele. I am glad he is the leader of the party, administratively," Palin told Fox News' Sean Hannity Wednesday. "If those within the party are choosing to go a different direction, his term is up in a number of months and they can vote someone else in. But I think he is doing a great job."
The comments come amid speculation Palin is seeking to distance herself from Steele and the RNC after news surfaced the organization expensed a night out a risqué Los Angeles nightclub for donors earlier this year and ran up large bills for luxury hotel stays and private jet travel.
But a Palin adviser told CNN that Palin's request to be removed from the invitation for the events - timed to coincide with this week's Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans - was simply because she never planned on attending the events in the first place. Palin is slated to speak Friday at the SRLC, a gathering of top Republican officials and an early cattle call for potential 2012 presidential candidates.
In her comments Wednesday, the former Republican vice presidential nominee also hailed Steele as an "outsider" who is trying to change the Republican Party.
"The machine is tough I think to penetrate," she said. "I think it's been good to have an independent outsider to create some change in the Republican Party. I support him."

Two peas in a pod neither of which have common sense nor represent the real Republican Party.
The term vacuous doesn't even begin to describe the space betwen Palin's ears. Even when lobbed softballs from Hannity, her biggest worshipper, she still manages to say absolutely nothing.
I'll go along with Sarah. She and Mitt should someway team up and RELOAD together.. How about that ???
Lots of time on the road, little time spent with your family. Wasn't her family the reason why she left her post in the first place? Anyone who believes this woman is about as smart as a grapefruit. I typically never say this about anyone, but Palin is a DUMB BROAD!
Doesn't surprise me one bit. They supported President Bush when he ran up the deficit. Why wouldn't repupublicans support Steele when he spends more of their donors money than they take in? It's business as usual for them.
Sure Ms. Half-Term, he's doing a great job. Who knows what she means by "outsider". She surely does not. What a loon.
She has a very high IQ
Whoa now - you don't want to call Steele a "maverick" !! McCain is not sure if he's done with that old sweater yet....
Ms Palin, please show your support with a hefty $$$ contribution to the RNC. That should please both your conservative pals and your Tea Party frugalists, eh....?
all right already enough with this wacko from wasilla
she full of 1 liners no substance
go away sister sarah only the nut jobs think you are sane
Palin herself couldn't wait until the voters of Alaska made their own decision though. This great public servant walked out on the job the people elected her to do.
On another note, how is the Chairman of one of the two major parties "an independent outsider." Sarah either does not have a very large vocabularly or the chip in her head has gotten stuck.
Safe to say this wasting of money was happening before Steele and will happen after Steele. Same with DNC. This is just the Good Ole Boys of RNC wanting to get rid of an outsider that doesnt bow to them.
Sarah Palin knows full well that Mike Steele is NOT the leader of the Republican Party...it's Rush Limbaugh remember Sarah..the guy who you said it ws just "satire" when he used the word retard and would not say he was sorry for using it but when a Democrat did the same you wanted him fired! If Steele was the head of he GOP no way would he have gone back begging for forgiveness after he called out Boss Limbaugh a year back. Get real Mrs. Palin.
Both Steele and Palin bring out the truth about Democrats. Democrats make sexist and racist remarks about these two that prove that the left is the DixieCrat Robert Byrd party.
If you believe that every American is an individual that is allowed to deicide their own ideology, ethics, morals, and values, you don't vote Democrat.
And this coming from a Quitter !! Not surprsing though...
Wait, wait!!! Did she almost say "He's doing a heck of a job?"
A dim bulb in an otherwise bright world.
I'll bet the Dems are moaning now!! They're best hope was that Steele stay in his job at the RNC as he's been the gift that keeps on giving!!
But now the Palin statement of support might well be the kiss of death??
Oh well, it was sweet while it lasted!!!
Okay, here's the thing: I don't likeSarah Palin, and I have no respect for Mikey Steele BUT I do respect the fact that Palin as a RethugliKKKlan is sticking by her Party Chairman. Whether she means it or not is IRRELEVANT. I believe in LOYALTY when facing your opposition. We can set each other straight and air our dirty laundry behind closed doors.
Hats off to you Sarah (God, that hurt!) in standing 'by your man'.
Sarah Palin reminds me of Charlie Browns teacher: Blah Blah Blah
We can all rest easy now that Palin supports Steele. His job is now all but assured to be lost.
So Sarah approves of the RNC spending the money at this risque night spot. One more example of hypocricy from the right (regardless of repubs vs tea party) in regards to family values
Steele would consider this was a slap in the face.
This just goes to show this woman is a complete and utter idiot, definitely not VP material, Definitely NOT EVEN Dog Catcher Material, this woman is not competent to walk down the street and chew gum at the same time.
When you look at this CREATURE Sarah Palin ,one could see the lies printed all over her face while the GARBAGE spurts through her mouth.
What do you spect from Ms Alaska?I wish the republican party choose her for 2012
No one who's the paid flack-in-chief for a political party is either "independent" or an "outsider'.
