(CNN) – In this midterm election year, Republicans might do well to embrace the “party of no” label placed on them by Democrats, conservative blogger Erick Erickson said Friday in an appearance on CNN.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin took different approaches to the Democratic label during speeches at this week’s Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. Gingrich told the GOP gathering that he thought “[t]here are many things that we can say yes to” while Palin opined “[t]here is no shame in being the party of no if [Democrats are] proposing an idea that violates our values, violates our conscience, violates our Constitution.”
Asked about the split between Gingrich and Palin, Erickson sided with Palin.
“I would say that saying no and being the ‘party of no’ is working pretty well for them,” he told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King.
Erickson also noted that Gingrich’s view represented that of more establishment Republicans, including some GOP congressional leaders. “All the people who have been in Washington for a long time say we’ve got to be the party of yes, we’ve got to stand for something,” Erickson told King.
But the CNN political contributor and editor-in-chief of RedState.com argued that the positions of Gingrich and Palin were not fundamentally at odds.
“At the end of the day,” he said, both were expressing roughly the same sentiment: “say no to the direction of the country we’re headed in and yes to freedom and liberty and where the Republicans want to go.”
Erickson, an attorney, also did a bit a handicapping of President Obama’s next Supreme Court pick in the wake of Friday’s news that Justice John Paul Stevens will be stepping down from the high court.
Watch: Erickson on the next justice
Erickson said Republicans would have “a real hard time” opposing Solicitor General Elena Kagan if Obama tapped her. He called Kagan “highly qualified.”
Asked about the GOP’s presidential prospects in 2012, Erickson told King he thought conservatives didn’t have a favorite and “want a fresh face.” Erickson also said Palin “whips up a frenzy among people” and that some conservatives are interested in former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
That's all good and well. In November I plan on joining them in saying "NO"......"NO" to their hypocrital stance on values, "NO" to their lack of social conscience, and "NO" to their perversion of the Constitution to fill whichever flavor of snake oil they are selling for this week.
They are in store for quite the rude awakening this November as the only one's they are fooling with their lies and distortions are themselves.
WE are not the party NO, but the party of HELL NO..............
Does anyone find this ridiculous? Blatant strategy to just say no to everything and not get anything done? hahaha Bravo Republicans. Bravo. So useless..
In my opinion, the Republican party should just throw in the towel, party of NO is, I hope, dead. Their obstructionist views have only hendered much needed change in America. At the end of the day, the Republicans/Conservatives/Tea Bag (actually all one group) are seriously hurting America. Sorry real Conservatives, did not mean to lump you in with the right religious nuts. Hey, what can I say....I happen to respect our current President, and (GULP) he is not done yet with bringing America into modern times. This President and his policies are long overdue. While I am at it, thank you President Obama for the nuclear arms treaty....what a breath of fresh air, a breath of fresh air that we may never have had access to before...even past President Regan thanks you.
He sided with Palin (Not that Gingrich was a good option either but compared to Palin...), and still wants to be taken seriously (by non-ultra-far-right-wingers)?
Is this guy a comedian?
The GOP is the party of NO because they have no new idea on how to move the economy forward, no solutions to how we can come out of the recession, no alternative solution to the nation,s health care reform which they oppose, no solution on how to bring down our trade deficit with china no idea on how to peacefully resolve Iran's nuclear ambition and continue to say no to every thing proposed by president Barack Obama from his supreme court nomination of Sotomayor to his signing of nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia. And the list goes on and on and on. So it does not how what Palin or Gingrich try to twist or spin the word No. The fact remains that the American people have seen that the GOP continues to oppose anything that will benefit the masses and are bent on not just creating two different classes of Americans but the some people will remain in poverty and servitude.
While the GOP might the party of no they have not offered any solutions to the problems that people are dealing with. When they should have said NO to two wars they didn't.Now they say no to spending yet they could spend and then borrow from everyone under the sun, which is why they now realize they should have said no eight years earlier. What is their beef and more to the point where is the beef. They are testing the Democrats but have only been a bunch of hot air.
What happens if you tell your parents "no" every time they ask you to eat your vegetables? You are forced to eat them anyway even though you throw a temper tantrum. "Shut up and eat your carrots."
How Quickly ... the Republicans run towards ANY other subject than Mike Steele
They sit around tables with suggestions Like " Maybe we can convince the American people " that 9/11 happened on Obamas Watch, Their naive enough to believe it
Also ... you should have to complete at least one WHOLE term, before later being regarded as a FORMER anything ...
At LEAST one term
Yeh........just stay were you are and the party of "NO" because look like no body qualify for President in Republican side.
NOW the Republicans try to pose the disgusting and well deserved "Crown" of being Obstructionists to the prosperity of the American citizen and our countries future, as some thing they should CLAIM ??????? AS GOOD !!
Step Right Up Folks ....
See A Lion Put A ladies Head In It's Mouth ...
Only 5 Cents ...
Step Right Up ....
What A Circus they have truly become ...
The real test is how long the Republicans can keep up their "NO" stance. The economy is clearly starting to turn around, and the Republicans were not at the helm of the Recovery.
Well you know I work every day but I could not imagine being able to do nothing and still be there.
What else is there to say, the dirty repugs only care about getting re-elected, not the American people. God help us all if the American people have forgotten so guickly the 8 year travestry under Bush.
