Palin drills down in policy in high-profile speech

New Orleans (CNN) - Her speeches are typically loaded with partisan zingers and Obama-bashing, but for the first time since the 2008 presidential campaign, Sarah Palin delivered a speech that focused as much on policy ideas as it did on political combat.

To be sure, her much-anticipated remarks Friday to the Southern Republican Leadership Conference were laced with a heavy dose of Republican cheerleading that drew cheers from the audience of party activists who had earlier stampeded into the speech venue to snag prime seating for her appearance.

"There is no shame in being the 'Party if No' if the other side is proposing an idea that violates our values, violates our conscience, violates the Constitution," she said, deviating from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who urged the SRLC crowd on Thursday to pivot to being the "Party of Yes."

But without shying away from heated partisan rhetoric, Palin spent the latter half of her talk expounding on differences between Democratic and Republican energy policies, a comfortable topic for the former Alaska governor and onetime chair of the state's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

She called President Obama's decision to expand offshore drilling "smoke and mirrors" - cover for a slate of more liberal energy policies that he and Democrats in Congress plan to enact.

She faulted the Obama administration for not opening up more areas to oil and gas drilling, particularly in her home state of Alaska. It's time to "stop ignoring" the National Petroluem Reserve Alaska and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, she said, even if a caribou has to "take one for the team."

"It's 'Drill, Baby, Drill,' not 'Stall, Baby, Stall,'" she said.

On foreign policy, Palin launched a volley of attacks against the White House that echoed some of the missives she has posted on her Facebook page over the last year. The Obama administration, she claimed, "alienates our friends."

"They treated Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai poorly and acted surprised when he reacted in kind," she said. "And they escalated a minor zoning decision into a major breach with Israel, our closest ally in the Middle East."

And acknowledging Thursday's headlines, Palin couldn't resist a mocking jab at President Obama after he charged in an ABC News interview that she is "not much of an expert" on nuclear weapons.

"And President Obama, with all that vast nuclear expertise he acquired as a community organizer, a part-time senator, and a candidate for president, has accomplished nothing to date with Iran or North Korea," she said.

Hopefully, after the mid-terms when the GOP gets the beating it so richly deserves, this ignorant piece of fluff will go into hiding and we will never have to hear her shrill, nasty voice again.

Palin is a joke end of story, I really have a hard time understanding how ANYONE in this country could feel comfortable if this woman were running this country. The thought scares me and Thank god there are enough people out there to see how truely ignorant she really is.

Like many millions of Americans, I have had enough of her crap. Her constant taunting and attacking the President is bordering now on ridiculous and getting really old. She never explains policy or offers any solutions. I believe she is a disgrace and very un-patriotic. Her poor family must be suffering through a lot putting up with her blind ambition.

Sure a lot of libs taking aim with personal attacks but what else do they do. I for one am darn tired of the Dems moving ever closer to socialism and losing more freedoms. I would sooner stick my hand in a fire than vote for Dem.

This nut job criticized Obama about the Nuke Treaty, but failed to mention that Reagan and then Nixon were the ones that actually started the SALT talks. Also why no mention of this on Faux News. Way to keep the RepubliKlan morons uninformed.

For someone who is so concerned about the American people, or at least the ‘real Americans’ she has done nothing for a year and a half to actually help anyone but herself and her pocket book. I would like to hear of one single thing she has done to actually make an improvement in someone else’s life. And by the way, making people feel better about hating smart successful people is not actually helpful. If anything it just encourages them to not improve themselves.
Just think if she had used her new found fame to help for Down’s Syndrome research or found some other calling that actually makes a difference. But why actually work when you can make a fortune being a bitter complainer with no solutions to offer…

I have to say some of the "conservative" posters here are incredible. One mentioned 'obtuse dem sheep'. After decades of encroaching consrevative policies that lead us to the economic melt down of 2008, does this country really want to give control of the driver's seat back to the drunk who drove us into the ditch. Obama cut the taxes of the middle class and they complain about being 'taxed enough already' when taxes are at a forty year low....facts matter? Not to these types. Let's not forget the massive redistribution of wealth from the middle to upper class under GWB. The republicans are already showing signs of obstructing bank reregulation, which HAS to be done in order to prevent what just happened from happening again. I just don't understand why what is so obvious is totally lost on these people, and they think Palin is presidential material?! Give me a break. The dems aren't the obtuse sheep here; it's the FNC consuming, talk radio dittoheads.

Its not that she gets under my skin. What annoys me about her is why there are so many uninformed people out there that still listen to the nonsense this dipstick spews out. When I first heard her interview with Katie Couric I realized this women was a totally clueless hick who was out of her element. She should stick with hunting wolves and talking with Putin over her backyard fence and she will do just fine.
