Stupak to announce retirement

Bart Stupak will announce his retirement Friday.
Bart Stupak will announce his retirement Friday.

Marquette, Michigan (CNN) – Nine-term Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Michigan, will reveal Friday he is retiring from Congress, several Democratic sources close to Stupak tell CNN.

The anti-abortion Democrat has been facing opposition from both the right and the left for his 11th hour deal with the White House that he says bans federal funding for abortion. The deal ultimately led to his decisive vote in favor of the health care bill.

Stupak first informed Democratic leaders last week that he was considering retiring. He has received calls from President Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others urging him to run again.

Democratic sources in Washington and Michigan say they fear losing Stupak, a historically popular Democrat in a sprawling conservative district, will mean likely losing his seat to the Republicans.

According to one Democratic source familiar with his plans, Stupak is expected to make the case that he is leaving because he has accomplished what he went to Washington in 1992 to do - pass health care reform.

He will also say he considered retiring several times in the past.

Responding to news of the retirement, National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ken Spain said: “After selling his soul to Nancy Pelosi, it appears that Bart Stupak finally found the courage to tell her no. The political fallout over the Democrats’ government takeover of healthcare has put the political careers of many Democrats in jeopardy thanks in-part to Stupak’s decision to abandon his alleged pro-life principles. Unfortunately for Pelosi, she was unable to strong-arm Stupak one last time as she becomes increasingly aware of the fact that her hold on the Speaker’s gavel is loosening by the day.”

I do hope Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Michigan does reconsider. If not, I would hope President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi contine to urge him to run again. Although I agree he has successfully fulfilled his goal of passing Health Care Reform legislation, there is still more work to be done, such as passing Health Care Reform legislation with a public option. Needless to say, if Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak does retire, he will be very sorely missed.

Given a choice between Congress or the safety and well being of himself and his family, Bart chose the latter. Eighteen years is quite a long time for public service especially when the public is not worth it. This is quite sad!

What a shame....and why does the Republican party keep calling health care reform a government takeover? Anyone who has followed the debate knows that it's just not true and can go to Fact Check websites to verify.

When are these Republicans going to shut up, they are the ones that ruin this country, I hope that when people go to vote that they remember that it was the Republicans that sent all of our jobs over seas and started the wars. I am sorry to hear that Bart Stupak is retiring at such a time that his experience is needed. I am not a great supporter of Nancy, however she has a job that needs to be done and she does it. We may have different opinions but she was put in that position to get things done and that is what she is doing and getting paid for.

He has seen the writing on the wall. He sold his soul to Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Obama. Just another politician whose principals have a price. Unfortunately, it would appear that this Congress has become an auction house and anyone and everyone's vote is to be had for a price. Just once I would like to find a politician who really has principals and will not abandon them for any price. This recent voting on the so-called healthcare reform bill and the closed doors deals have really shown the citizens of this country that they care less about what is best for the citizens then they do about their hold onto power, inflating their egos, selling themselves to the highest bidder. And they wonder why the citizens are so upset. Besides they have shown their utter disregard for the citizens with their name calling and utter dismissal of our concerns.
