CNN Poll: Who wins an Obama vs. Palin matchup?

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday indicates that President Barack Obama would top the former Alaska governor by double digits in a possible 2012 general election showdown.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday indicates that President Barack Obama would top the former Alaska governor by double digits in a possible 2012 general election showdown.

Washington (CNN) - She may be the best known Republican politician considering a bid for the White House, but Sarah Palin comes in third in a hypothetical horserace for the next GOP presidential nomination, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday also indicates that President Barack Obama would top the former Alaska governor by double digits in a possible 2012 general election showdown.

Full results (pdf)

The survey found that 24 percent of Republicans and Republican leaning Independents say they would most likely support Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and 2008 GOP presidential candidate, in the battle for the 2012 GOP nomination. And 20 percent said they would back former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who also ran for the White House in 2008. Palin, who was Sen. John McCain's running mate in the last presidential election, came in third place with 15 percent, a point ahead of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

According to the poll, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, another 2008 Republican presidential hopeful, would be in fifth place, with eight percent. Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour all register in the lower single digits in the hypothetical 2012 GOP presidential nomination matchup.

"Huckabee does best among women, regular church-goers, and Republicans who never attended college," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Romney gets better numbers among white collar Republicans and GOPers who attend church once a month or less. Palin does not win among any of those groups, despite the fact that she has a higher favorable rating among Republicans than Huckabee, Romney or Gingrich."

What about the hypothetical general election matchup in 2012 against President Obama?

The poll shows Obama topping Romney 53 percent to 45 percent, beating Huckabee 54 percent to 45 percent, defeating Gingrich 55 percent to 43 percent and topping Palin 55 percent to 42.

"It is important to remember that at this stage of the game, candidate matchups are largely driven by name recognition, and at least a quarter of all Americans are unfamiliar with Romney, Huckabee and Gingrich. As a result, Obama has an 8- to-12-point edge over each of them in hypothetical matchups," adds Holland. "But in a previous CNN poll, Obama managed no better than a tie against an unnamed Republican."

But there is something more than name recognition at work in Obama's big lead over Palin.

"Palin is almost as well known as Obama, but the general public appears to have some doubts about what they have seen of her so far," says Holland.

The poll found that 61 percent of Americans think Palin is not a typical politician, and half see her as honest and trustworthy. But 54 percent say they don't agree with her on the issues, 56 percent say she is not a strong and decisive leader, and 69 percent say she is not qualified to be president. Palin is popular in the South and in rural areas, but her unfavorable rating is at or near 60 percent among women, suburbanites, Independents, and in the Northeast and West.

The poll was conducted April 9-11, with 1,008 adult Americans, including 907 registered voters, questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points and plus or minus 4.5 percentage points for the sample of 498 Republicans and Republican leaning Independents.

If Palin is elected I'll be singing "O Canada!"

considering Mitt Romney and any other GOP candidate would destroy her in the debates, she'd never make it past the primaries. Let's not forget most of the GOP is educated, so while they may not make rash comments about her, I'm sure behind closed doors she more of a joke than anything.

None of these Republican candidates will beat President Obama simply because of their views on evolution. Governor Romney will lose the Republican nomination because he DOES believe in evolution (and also magic underwear, apparently), and Governors Huckabee and Palin can't win the general election because they DON'T believe in evolution.

Newt Gingrich won't win either just because he's a hypocrite who quietly resigned his office rather than face a rather public pot/kettle disgrace over his own affairs. (See: Clinton, Reasons for Impeachment.) And Ron Paul is a one-trick pony.

    Who else ya got, GOP?

If the GOP wants to even try and take back the White House from Obama they had better get some new candidates. The ones the GOP is peddling now are all has beens. I think that's what the GOP is famous for. Run a candidate over and over until the public gets so tired of looking at them that they elect them. That way, the public knows they will only have to look at them four more years insead of with every coming election. The Party of No, no ideas, no new candidates, no nothing. GO HOME!!!!!

"Matchup" hahaha! It sounds sooo ridiculous. I'm an independent myself, but even putting together a HIGHLY-INTELLIGENT AND KNOWLEDGEABLE person (Pres. Obama) with an airhead brainless super-lucky person, who I'm 100% sure became major and even governor (a total aberration) just for sexual favors to people in very high places, is kind of pathetic. Masny braindead super-ignorant, low-educated people support Palin because they relate to her in their ignorance, but thank God that's not even close to the majority! That brainless Palin woman does not deserve the spotlight she's receiving day by day by the national media, but this is a twisted world!

I think Gov Huckabee would be the best Repubican nominee in 2012. He's smart, he understands the average working man, and he has a cool calm demeanor that projects total competence. A sincere honest man of the people like Gov Huckabee would also make Obama's arrogance and contempt for average working people all that more obvious. The nation is growing tired of Obama's arrogance, ego, sarcasm, and contempt for average people! Huckabee 2012!!!!!

A fair percentage of those who think Palin has something to offer the world probably also think that the earth is flat, that mankind started with Adam and Eve in the form of caucasians (as depicted in European art work) a mere 8000 biblical years ago, and that nobody trying to buy a bazooka should be subjected to a background check. The more Palin says and does, the more she makes her Republican party of regression the laughing stock of the more intelligent world. Her conduct confirms the the famous quote that "all of life is a continuation of high school."

This is an interesting hypothetical situation. I'm surprised at the lead that Obama supposedly has over each GOP contender. I would think that people would be more likely to vote along party lines (i.e. even if a republican is not fond of Palin, they would still vote for her as a republican candidate over Obama).

What I think is more interesting is how media has affected the public's overall impression of Palin and Obama. For instance, if Palin was not parodied on SNL or if Obama was not portrayed as such an icon (e.g. the HOPE posters), would the public view them differently? If the public did not have the distortion of the media (whether intended or not) and the presidential candidates were assessed based on their character and merits (i.e. experience, leadership, ideology, etc.) how would the public's opinion change regarding such a presidential election match-up?

Maybe republicans should stop pretending to be anything but knee-jerk extremists and finally nominate Rush Limbaugh. I think the fly in this poll is this.........
Many Republicans like myself don't identify
with the Republican party of the last few years.
Palin's appeal is stronger with the Republicans
who feel abandoned by the party.
The irony is we were accusing the democratic
party of being hijacked just a few years back.
Now our own party has been hijacked.
Make fun of Palin all you want but don't be
surprised to find out later that the unhappy
Republicans are much larger in number than you may
think. If we get a candidate who is of the Reagan
mold who won't compromise their principles to
appease their opponents (Sarah Palin) then we
could finally have a strong third party in America.
And remember this.....with a third party ,less than
40% of the votes can win an election.

So after months of listening to conservatives (& even the so-called liberal media) prattle on about Obama's plummeting poll numbers (which have been stable since late Fall), we learn that he would smoke any of the GOP's presumptive nominees–even after "ramming" the Health Care bill "down our throats" and running "the most liberal" and "socialist" presidency ever!

I have a very hard time believing that half of Americans see Palin as "honest and trustworthy". This is the woman who introduced the term "death panels". She's the one who claimed Obama "pals around with terrorists". She's the one who, when she released a book about the election, had virtually everyone she talked about in it speak out against the lies she told about them. Very few public figures out there are LESS honest and trustworthy than her.

Of course President Obama would win with a landslide against Palin. The majority of Americans are not stupid enough to put our fate in Palin's hands. Palin won't run she has what she wants media attention anytime she wants it with no responsibility. She has also made 12 million dollars since she quite her job as Governor of Alaska in July 2009.

Where is John Mccain when you need him, he should have picked me and I could be rich. An Obama-Palin contest in 2012 will be a political disaster as it will leave the American people with little or no choice whether the people want war or peace. The main problem here is that we have two political parties, both of them on the right so both the moderates and the liberals have been pretty much programmed out of the process.

No suprise Palins in 3rd place. However with 2 years to go that is a great spot to be.After all the non stop attacks and this new theme she is not ready, making the rounds.I am suprised she even does this well.Anyways if the polls dictated in 2005 & 2006 who would of won each parties nomination in 2008.You would of seen money bags Romney versus Hillary in 2008.Same with in 2007.However it did not work out that way did it?In aug 2007 only 29% in a cbs poll thought Obama was qualified.Gee that is never reported today as people keep posting these polls about how only roughly 29% think, Palins qualified with 2 years, not 6 months untill the first primary.Common people enough with this poll garbage. In Mass in Dec 2009, Coakly was up 30 points and lost by 8.In one month for everyone to witness that kind of turn around only spells one thing.Polls mean 0 up untill a week of an election.

As long as they keep writing about this on these tickers I'm going to keep making this assertion. SARAH PALIN IS 100% QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT. The US Constitution states that the only qualifications to be President are:

    1) a natural born citizen
    2) 35 years of age or older
    3) been a resident of the US at least 14 years

She meets all of these qualifications. But this does not change the fact that I think she would be a terrible President. Being qualified to do something doesn't mean you would be good at it.

We will have another 4 years of Bush-style politics if Sarah Palin comes to power. A person so immature and deceitful as Palin handling the Oval office is very scary.

It's pretty serious when Palin's unfavorable ratings are higher than Nancy Pelosi's, after all the propaganda, hate, and fearmongering against Pelosi.

Thank goodness we have representatives like President Obama, Senator Reid, and Speaker Pelosi who have the intelligence and courage to do what's right for the American people despite all the venom coming from the rightwing (and the corporate CEOs who give the rightwing their orders).

So Huckabee who is as looney as they come beats Palin who is dumber than dirt. There are so many intelligent electable republicans, but still the right wing zealots have there hold on the party. It will be the parties doom if they don't start embracing their true assets in their own party. The ones they are proposing as favorites are truly not electable unless all the independents and many democrats switch their votes, which won't happen as the idealogy of the ring wingnuts is just too much for those moderates to swallow.

I'm thinking about writing a drama/horror novel regarding Palin in the Oval Office. Bill Kristol, Gingrich, Krautheimer and all those weirdo's propel her into the White House, you know, feeding her political lines, republican sound bytes, foreign policy tidbits and she fools the independents in America-and gets elected. It would be a thriller, to be sure. In the end, she ends up destroying the entire world, a global fiasco, the end of the world as we know it. In fact, she winks as she pushes the nuclear button. Think it will sell?

    Needless to say: LOL.

If this is the dregs the GOP generates by scraping the bottom of the barrel, they're in serious, SERIOUS trouble unless they can completelly and utterly stop Congress from doing a single thing for the next 3 years and force everyone to suffer in such a way that they can still blame the Dems for it. Think they don't realize that? What how they vote.

"Palin is popular in the South and in rural areas, but her unfavorable rating is at or near 60 percent among women, suburbanites, Independents, and in the Northeast and West."

So basically she might be able to pull out a win in Alabama, Mississippi, and/or Kentucky, though I doubt even that would be possible. Now you can see how badly McCain erred by choosing this shrewish, ignorant woman for a running mate. She is not qualified to sweep the floor at the White House, and she is certainly not in the same league as President Obama or any of the other GOP contenders mentioned.

    None of this really matters.

As the article says, 'Random Republican' would do better as an option than any specific person due to weak name recognition.

And the poll which did that recently is still too old, and to pre-health care success, pre-nuclear and pre-Russia/China events.

The most telling poll will be in a month or two after all the success Obama has had in the last 1-2 months sinks in.

News must be slow for CNN to try to make something out of nothing with a poll on Obama vs. Palin. Just try to imagine her debating Obama three times? It would be like a college professor vs. a kindergartner with no disrespect to the kindergartner intended. When the Republicans and Conservatives wake up and realize that Palin does not have the intellectual bona fides to run this country, then they can get serious about finding a real contender. It's hard to imagine why ANYONE with at least two firing synapses would even CONSIDER choosing Ms. Palin as President. She's a quitter, a hypocrite, a liar and a buffoon. She is the intellectual equivalent of road kill.

And then there's Mr. Huckabee – He's incompetent, also a liar and a has little regard for the middle class. It's hard to believe that the sperm that created Mr. Huckabee beat out millions of others in the race to fertilize the "egg of the month."

There is little doubt most of those who dislike Mr. Obama are not only sore losers but most likely have racial issues with which they've never come to grips.

Sadly, I suspect 2012 will be a reincarnation of 2008 – a divisive, ugly election rife with name calling and lies.

In my opinion Romney is the best candidate when one considers the economic state of the country, the need to minimize the health care debacle, the unemployment rate, etc. As an aside, Palin ought to move to Massachusetts and run against Kerry the first chance she gets.

Let the republican hate machine start their spin. All of the republican's mentioned are well known. They presented their vision for America either via the presidential race (palin) , the primary race (romney, huckabee, paul) or their congressional record. (Newt) Let's face it, Obama is the best their is, In order for Palin to be seen as a viable candidate, (listen republicans) she needs to keep a very low profile, study up on the issues and her history and speak intelligently. Right now, she wants the spotlight (doesn't realize that Reagan wants to reuce the amount of arms we have) doesn't know the issues (nuclear threats) and her country vocabulary makes her sound ignorant (you betcha)

She will UNLEASH GOD's WRATH onto DC and root out all the corruption and restore the government to the people! Can't you find a better representative of what is really happening in our country? Obama is making huge strides toward protecting the majority of us, (the middle-class, the poor, and others who don't fall under the "elite" category for media coverage,) so who not give us a break? Stop playing into the divisiveness of this unimportant person and stop insulting our intelligences with this non-stop coverage.

Many don't trust the CNN polls. They tend to slant questions for desired outcomes. It is outrageous how CNN will do a documentary on Sarah Palin but present her very negatively taking clips that show her bloopers and then finish with a Tina Fey Clip. If conservatives did that to Obama they would be labeled racist. I have seen many of Sarahs interviews and personally find her more intelligent than Obama. But hey CNN sees him as the messiah and would not dare present him in a negative light.

There are not enough points on the scale to measure the amount
Obama would have to soar pass Palin.... I mean come on why is
this even a story? The constant rhetoric that Palin produces should
be enough for any intelligent person to literally want to jump off a

"It is important to remember that at this stage of the game, candidate matchups are largely driven by name recognition, and at least a quarter of all Americans are unfamiliar with Romney, Huckabee and Gingrich. As a result, Obama has an 8- to-12-point edge over each of them in hypothetical matchups," adds Holland.

Uh...really? People do not know who Romney, Huckabee and Gingrich are? Gingrich I might be able to see as he has been out of the news in recent years. Romney and Huckabee were both canidates for the GOP nomination coming in third and second (in that order) behind McCain.

Gingrich is he former speaker of the house and I think his name is still very well known.

For Sarah Palin to be even in the top 100 shows how leaderless the Republican party truely is. If the American public is so desperate to make a change in the White House in 2012 that they would even give the slightest consideration to Sarah Palin, tells me how low we have sunk as a nation.
As we go along, I find myself speechless when it comes to the subject of who should lead our country for the next 8 years. Seems to me it's a no brainer but of course, I support President Obama 100% now and will do so again in 2012.

Is it to marginalize the president or an attempt to elevate this woman. It is a no brainer at most. It may stroke her ego but does nothing avout her real worth as a so-called leader. She is a good cheer leader but, no substance, and not a good candidate, keep writing answers in your hand Palin, that's how you do it. Huckabee plays bass. Now that is cool. And he supported a creative approach to addressing income taxes. That is a plus. (Though I think it would backfire.) However, he is too caught up in his holy war thinking for many of us Christians.

None of these numbers are really surprises except for Ron Paul. For Ron Paul to get 8% in this kind of poll this early is amazing. Something is going on.

If both run, Chuck Norris will be in an awkward position. He endorsed Huckabee for the 2008 nomination but has been a vocal fan of Paul since the nomination.

    The sadness of this poll...

42% of those polled think Sara Palin is qualified to be President (but wait 69 percent say she is not qualified to be president.), especially given her atrocious comments on the US/Russian Arms treaty, the fact she hasn't a coherent policy statement outside of criticizing Obama's hard work, and thinks that bad analogies somehow make bad positions pallatable... oh wait... they do to the FOX news crowd.

Even sadder... "at least a quarter of all Americans are unfamiliar with Romney, Huckabee and Gingrich" They ran last time! Wasn't that two years ago? Huckabee even stayed in it too long and Romney was a front runner! Gingrich.. speaker of the house and Repbulican icon.

I am not sure why the presidential ranking is such a big deal. Obama has stopped the unemployment rate from going further and it is starting come back down. People have recovered most of the money they lost in 401Ks under Bush. We are getting a treaty to reduce nuclear stockpiles and we are securing loose nukes. In the 2 1/2 years before the elections, Someone not mentioned in this poll could well come to the forefront and beat Obama by double digits. Whether you agree with Sarah Palin's views or not, you are out of your mind if you really think she'll win any high-level election, in November 2012 or any other time. Popularity does not equal effectiveness. As for Romney and Huckabee, I am happy to see them finally get some recognition because they are far more astute than Palin with carving out real solutions on the national and global fronts. Palin is a one-woman show. I just hope as a country we can quickly pull our heads out of the sand and realize what Obama has said all along – that it will take ALL of us making sacrifices to right the ship.

There are those who try to claim that Sarah Palin has as much experience in the political world due to her limited time as govenor of Alaska., as our current President has in his career. They are very confused and under informed. If they would take the time to explore, {even check Google} they would find out that as a Senator in Illinois, our president Obama was off to a good start in the political scene, and worked on any number of legistrated issues. He was as qualified to run as were most of our previous candidates and given time and a fair shake, he will prove himself worthy of the office.I have been around a long time and have seen administrations come and go,some good, some bad. but they need more than one and a half years to prove themselves.

CNN should be ashamed to even think of taking a poll. She is a nobody but a person trying to make a name for herself by running around with the tea party and chastise the president. She did not even help John McCain so what made you think is she can give the president a run for the presidency.

    ARE YOU KIDDING ME????

I find this article very bias since CNN is known to be Pro Obama. The question is would you have printed the information if it had not been favorable to President Obama. My guess is "No"! Have yet to see a "fair and balance" artilce on CNN's website.

Why do folks at CNN and other "mainstream" news outlets keep talking about Sarah Palin? Shouldn't this article be titled "Obama beats current GOP potential candidates in new poll?" Why is Sarah Palin constantly held out as the face of the Republican party. I know a lot of people like her, but no one I know thinks she is a serious candidate for any national political office, much less President. Is it because CNN wants to paint the GOP in the negative light of its most controversial member? "I can't stand that woman, Palin. I better rush out and vote for Osama again."

Sarah Palin not qulaified? – She had a partial term as a Governor and actually did something. Obama had a partial term as a Senator and did nothing. If she isn't qualified, neither is he. Goes to show what a bunch of ignorant, do nothing, government take care of me people that live and vote in this country. Not all should be allowed to vote as we well know now. If Obama doesn't manage to destroy the country before 2010, maybe America will wake up. It owuld take someone with a lot of business experience and real "intestinal fortitude" to step in and clean up Washington D.C. If it doesn't happen, we will be ruled by a foreign country sooner than later. Think it can't happen? Obama bows to everyone – except to the will of the American people.

The American people really need to know that none of them except Mr. Paul are any different than President Obama. If you really want real change including peace, prosperity, and respect for the constitution and individual liberties, the only choice is Ron Paul. Make no mistake about it Ron Paul would easily win every debate against President Obama as he isn't playing political games or saying what someone else told him to, he is telling the truth, no notes, no teleprompter just the honest truth. Wow, Its a sad day for the radical anti american fringe liberal party. I mean when polls are already being taken about the 2012 race (Obozo may be impeached or even physically removed from office by then due to the coming revolution) after Obozo has been in office a little over a year its pathetic. The fact that this poll was even taken this early on shows how pathetic, non effective and basically ridiculous the Obama regime really is. After the radicals get wiped out in November, the focus will be on the lead Socialist and Chief. Take this poll in 2012 when it matters and see what the results are then. Guarantee the Radical and Chief will be one and done. COUNT ON IT

Palin is a celebrity, not a serious contender. I'm sure the people in charge at the GOP know this too. Come 2012 it'll be someone like Huckabee and Romney, and Palin will be left to host some show on Fox News. I support Obama and want to see him continue after 2012, but if the Republicans think they can do better, surely they can try with a superior candidate than Palin. There's plenty to choose from.
