Reports: Big labor leader to step down

Stern, a top Obama ally, is stepping down from his post as head of the SEIU, according to reports.
Stern, a top Obama ally, is stepping down from his post as head of the SEIU, according to reports.

(CNN) - Andy Stern, the head of one of the most powerful labor unions and a top ally of President Obama, is resigning his post, according to a report from the Washington Post.

Stern has been at the helm of the 2.2 million-member Service Employee International Union since 1996 and initiated the then-controversial move to split with the AFL-CIO in 2004. He went on to found the Change to Win labor federation in 2005 - a federation of six major unions which heavily supported President Obama's election bid.

A spokeswoman for the SEIU would not confirm or deny the reports, but said Stern will
address these rumors at the close of the SEIU Executive Committee meeting this week."

SEIU also played a key role in the health care debate over the last fall, spending millions of dollars promoting the Democrats' plan on the airwaves and pressuring House Democrats in swing states to support the legislation.

This is good news. Anytime a labor leader states that direction should come from the federal government instead of using the entrepreneurship of the workers and private industry has totally lost touch with the labor union ideology.

It's so nice to see the hate and disfranchised exude from the greedy people who finally feel the insecurities and hopelessness of my ancestors.

Go Obama! make them feel the pain of 400 years.

Here's a thought, why don't we provide the same level of education for everyone through the college level no matter what financial situation they come from creating economic stability.

That would get their panties in a bunch!!!

    Well said, El Gordo!!

The rest of you conservative sheep who "say" you despise socialism...give back your social security checks when you get them. Refuse medicare help.

Rant all you want; your time has passed (thank God!), and even all the decrees handed down by your Lord-God-on-High Ronald Reagan will pass away, too.

    The times they are a-changin'.

Stern retires just weeks after health care passes? Coincidence? I THINK NOT! Corrupticago strikes again. Wonder how big Andy's pay-out was from Baracula....(?)

REPEAL AND REPLACE Baracula's morality/existence "health care" MANDATE (forced "compassion") TAX!!!!

You libs sit idle while Baracula sells all our rights down the river for a bribe-laden entitlement which is sure to crush the economy. Andy and Boy Bamby turned us ALL into union entitlement drones AND worse yet, unions don't pay as much as the private working tax paying citizen!

Libs and this "administration"....the most arrogant, hypocritical, self righteous and contradictory group of inexperienced thugs EVER!

Glad the union scum is gone. Unions played an important role in history but the unions today are much different. SEIU is a very corrupt organization.

It's time to clean house, starting with the government in November! Then Obama is out in 2012 so he can't continue to harm the country!

The proverbial pendulum has swung too far to the left again. Unions have their place in this country but not by running this country! We are sick and tired of our country being run by Union thugs. The pendulum is swinging back to the center where it needs to be. This country runs best with politics and Unions running in the center.

El Gordo – "Those who dismiss the contributions of unions are ignorant of the 40 hour week, overtime pay, health benefits, laws against sexual harassment, workplace safety regulations, laws against child labor, laws forbidding discrimination by race, laws forbidding discrimination against women, pregnancy leave (it used to be called getting fired), family leave, and many many more. "

And those who ignore what unions have become are blind to the economic realities of today. Unions are killing this country through inflated wage scales and benefits packages as well as their stubborn refusal to get rid of the low-life non-producers.

"Those who imagine that we have become a "knowledge" economy and don't need unions anymore have never worked in IT sweatshops with sixty hour weeks, no overtime pay, and reduced pay scales caused by the outsourcing of computer code to India and other Asian nations."

And unions are the solution to this? How? No, unions had their day. We don't want or need them any more. Wake up.

To the comments about the contributions of unions: how about these? GM bankrupt – lost enough money in the last 4 years to buy Toyota. Airlines – serially bankrupt. Teachers – won't let themselves be paid on performance. Goverment workers pension funds bankrupting state goverments. You can brag about your 40 hour work week, but when we are France, you will be worse off.

Whew! The CRAZIES are out in force today! There is nothing "evil" or "socialist" or "marxist" or "communist" about unions, morons. They are not "thugs". They are organizations which exist to help, not hurt the American Worker! Learn something about unions before you just run off at the mouth (or keyboard) about how they are the anti-christ, WILL YOU PLEASE!!!!

Thanks for screwing over your own union members and then bailing out. At least it won't be you that has to live with all the backlash from your union members when they start getting lower valued benefits packages from the companies that are already struggling to compete in this marketplace. Oh yeah and let's not forget that companies will most likely not just pay the taxes and lose the subsidies they were getting for Medicare Part D so expect the trend of transferring more jobs off shore to continue.

    Atta'boy Andy!!

He probably isn't progressive enough for the communist Obama. This administration won't rest until they have completely ruined America. Who needs to worry about Al Qaeda when the biggest threat to freedom sits inside the oval office?

"Top ally of president Obama" Do a search on ( corruption and Andy Stern ) and see if this man and his organization should be an ally for any president. ACORN was an ally of Obama we can only hope SEIU follows them in their down fall.

Doug, lib jersey, you haven't a clue what you're talking about. "Obama-bot Union thug mobsters can say they want the republican governor of New Jersey killed without even the slightest punishment ".

There was an sent by Bergen County Education Association president Joseph Coppola in the form of a prayer, which said:

"Dear lord,' this year you have taken away my favorite actor, Patrick Swayze, my favorite actress, Farrah Fawcett, my favorite singer, Michael Jackson, and my favorite salesman, Billy Mays. I just wanted to let you know that Chris Christie is my favorite governor."

Hardly a call for the guy to be killed, aaaannnnnd, the Union leader was fired. I'd say that was punishment.

Whomever replaces him will still be an Obama supporter as he is a union supporter. The Unions all know the kind of support they get from the republican party. Zip, Zero, nadda.
