Reports: Big labor leader to step down

Stern, a top Obama ally, is stepping down from his post as head of the SEIU, according to reports.
Stern, a top Obama ally, is stepping down from his post as head of the SEIU, according to reports.

(CNN) - Andy Stern, the head of one of the most powerful labor unions and a top ally of President Obama, is resigning his post, according to a report from the Washington Post.

Stern has been at the helm of the 2.2 million-member Service Employee International Union since 1996 and initiated the then-controversial move to split with the AFL-CIO in 2004. He went on to found the Change to Win labor federation in 2005 - a federation of six major unions which heavily supported President Obama's election bid.

A spokeswoman for the SEIU would not confirm or deny the reports, but said Stern will
address these rumors at the close of the SEIU Executive Committee meeting this week."

SEIU also played a key role in the health care debate over the last fall, spending millions of dollars promoting the Democrats' plan on the airwaves and pressuring House Democrats in swing states to support the legislation.

  1. Enough...

i'm guessing all the negative comments here regarding unions must mean all you are business owners.... and would rather not pay a living wage or give health benefits or any other kind of benefit for that matter. If it wasn't for unions, most people would be working for pennies and the safe working conditions would not exist. They created unions for a reason... Otherwise we'd be getting paid the same as people in China!!

Ah, how SWEET it is!!! One less big spending moron trying to bring our country to its knees. Go do damage somewhere else, but not to our country. The big retirement $$$ must be way TOO attractive to pass up.

Are this crooks seeing the LIGHT that President NObama is blinded by?

If only we were able able to do the same thing with NObama, The Mouth Biden, Pelosi, Reed, etc., etc. It may cost us quite a bit initially, but probably it will save this once great country. Putting them out to pasture is the ONLY solution.

America, our MAJIC is starting to produce. PLEASE keep it up.

Wow, what an impressive display of hate from the ignorant teabaggers today. Since you hate unions so much (and apparently without any valid reasons) remember not to call the police or fire department when you're in trouble. And don't bother asking your kid's teacher for help. And while you're at it, be sure not to enter any buildings built with union labor. You'd all be hypocrites otherwise.

And is there some reason to beleive the next head of one of the largest unions in the natoin would not also be an Obama supporter? If you work for a living there really is only one party that represents your interests, and no, they don't wear tea bags on their heads, try to filibuster to starve your family, and give your children's future away to billionaires.

Exactly the problem with organized labor.....they do what is good for themselves, and not what is good for this country.

Versus corporate leaders who do what is good for themselves, and not what is good for this country?

Those opposed to unions must not place much value in themselves. But then again, minimum wage, lost benefits, lost pensions - the list goes on and on - due to corporate greed is something we should all aspire to, right, GOPers?

The dumbing down of America in full swing today on CNNs Ticker.

There has to be something in the water to bring out all this hate from Republicans, Tea Partiers, or whatever they call themselves. I have never seen so much hate, lack of respect, and apparent selfishness in my life. What is it exactly that has drawn out so much hate from the right?

So WHAT he's retiring, he may have accomplished his goals and it may just be his time to enjoy his golden years. Nothing more, nothing less.. You fools try to politicize EVERYthing. Rumsfeld retired in shame & so did Colin Powell during the Bush years. Until you see direct cabinet members are dropping like flies in the current administration, go jump in a lake.

Ah the dependable, historically-ignorant, union-bashing. Do you folks actually work? If so, and you're glad that your work week is five days and not six, you can thank the unions. If you're happy to go home after eight hrs. of work, and not ten or twelve, thank the unions. The unions were also driving forces behind child labor laws and worker safety. American labor unions did a lot more to build this country than any right-winger ever did. If you still don't like them, I suggest you spend some time with the families of dead and injured workers in third world countries where manufacturers run their operations without worker safety organizations like OSHA. That might help you get a clue.

Man...lots of hate for unions flying around. Wow. Yeah, I've always been opposed to fair wages and benefits myself. It's been a busy week for the wingnuts, what with ConfederateGate in Va., now a labor union leader retiring. Thank God we're not fighting two wars or dealing with a major recession

I love how the brain-damaged Beck Parrots call President Obama a clown, when their alternative was saying the fundamentals of the economy were strong and his running mate was Palin.

Obama is screwing up, though, with the Dow at 11,000, Russia coming to the table on nuclear proliferation, the path to health care repair started. I think he's done more in a year than Bush in eight years. After one year, Bush dug a crater and kept digging.

And Obama was upset with the Supreme Court leveling the playing field when the likes of SEIU spent how much for Obamacare??? Good riddens – all Unions should be regulated!

unions have their uses. This country does compete in manufacturing, innovation.... ect. ect. The only reason wages are as high as they are is from unions, equal rights so on and so forth. I do not support Obama or his administration by no stretch of the immagination. The union leadership have illegally spent union money from it's members since the creation of unions. Something has to be done about this and the retirement of some of the crooked union leaders could only me good for the members.

No one siad they wanted the governor of NJ killed. It was a joke. Since governor christie is trying to do eggregious harm to education, teachers, and state employees one might think people have a rather low opinion of him.

For those of you who don't appreciate what unions have done for you, you a free-loaders. You get the benefits that unions havebrought for more than 140 years, but you are not only contributing you make it harder for working people to get what is rightly theirs.

Now when does he announce he is getting a White House job thanks to him and his union money getting Obama elected? With his constant visits as number 1 on the WH list, this man will not go quietly into the night and if this was a shock to many, there must be a behind the scenes reason we all don't know yet. But I am sure we won't be shocked if he does get a cushy WH job of some kind. Obama owes him big time more than just pushing back the union payments for their share of helath care for 8 years.

Looks like the paid Republican-lie posters have re-grouped here.

After having been so soundly defeated when the Health Care bill was passed you guys disappeared for awhile.

Must have been getting issued new lies and idiotic talking points by your Republican masters, to post on the ticker.

Not to worry, Obama's still going to kick your collectve a$$ across the playground again.
