Reports: Big labor leader to step down

Stern, a top Obama ally, is stepping down from his post as head of the SEIU, according to reports.
Stern, a top Obama ally, is stepping down from his post as head of the SEIU, according to reports.

(CNN) - Andy Stern, the head of one of the most powerful labor unions and a top ally of President Obama, is resigning his post, according to a report from the Washington Post.

Stern has been at the helm of the 2.2 million-member Service Employee International Union since 1996 and initiated the then-controversial move to split with the AFL-CIO in 2004. He went on to found the Change to Win labor federation in 2005 - a federation of six major unions which heavily supported President Obama's election bid.

A spokeswoman for the SEIU would not confirm or deny the reports, but said Stern will
address these rumors at the close of the SEIU Executive Committee meeting this week."

SEIU also played a key role in the health care debate over the last fall, spending millions of dollars promoting the Democrats' plan on the airwaves and pressuring House Democrats in swing states to support the legislation.

How much does Andy get to retire with? Is the Government going to freeze his pay at $100,000.00 a year? Does he have to pay into his health care plan or is it free like the NJ state employees?

I am amazed by the lack of English skills displayed by the Right. They probably still think the earth is flat. Y'all go back to school if you are able to clear the gunk in your brains. If not, go back to Fox News as they will tell you what to think.

I'm shock here. I see so much hate for Pres. Obama that even the
big labor leader's decision to step down is Obama's fault or it's something to do with Obama. I hope God touches your heart and realize that hate will not make you any good. All Obama wants is to help american people.

    El Gordo,
Give me a break. We have something called labor laws, which provides for a minimum wage and overtime compensation. If you work overtime and are hourly, you get paid...it's the law. Unions had their place 75 years ago...they are no longer needed and only contribute to a corrupted work environment. Do you know how hard it is to fire a useless worker if they are part of a union? If someone is not performing, why should I have to go through a union foreman for disciplinary action or even to fire them? I've seen first hand how a union can destroy a company. Not buying your argument one bit. Unions always try to use the "corporate fat cat" scare tactics, but in reality, your union dues are paying the union corporate fat cats and political campaigns.

    El GORDO:

while i'm sure most people in the civilized world appreciate what unions used to stand for and what they helped develop in the way of fairness to general staff, it's no secret they've become too powerful in many ways, and can cripple the individual spirit before it can even hit its stride.

if you've worked a union-supported job, then became an owner of a company, you'll understand that, given all the labor laws in place and the wherewithal owners/mgmt now have regarding the need to take care of one's staff, we in the U.S.A. should be strong enough to now stand on our own. Unions can kill the entrepreneurial spirit of owners and mgmt staff that take ownership and pride in the delivery of their services.

    Obama victim:

please tell us how Obama victimized you...

also, when you and many others on here that are presumable REP continue to call him other than by his name, you continue to support the real truth: Uneducated, misinformed accusers (mostly REPs) = HYPOCRITES! I see and hear so many comments that liberals are name-callers and lash out when people don't agree with them, when in fact, it appears 90% of that tactic belongs to the REPs. it used to be comical...now it's simply self-degrading. keep it up...you're seeming smarter every day...

Unions are the reason some idiot at chevy makes $50 an hour plus benifits to put a tire on a car and put on some lug nuts. I am sorry but that is not a job worth 50 an hour. Unions are also the main reason why all the big companies left for cheaper places to do business. For that much money you would think that America could make a good car!

The SEIU is one of the most corrupt organizations in the US today. They need to be abolished.

We wonder why unemployment is at 10% and the US is losing ground to other countries with respect to GDP. We have way too many non-value-add organizations in the US. Add these to the ever-expanding government and increasing number of entitlement-seeking people simply too lazy too work and you have a recipe for disaster.

DEBBIE: Where were you when BUSH was the TRUE destroyer? Were you making silly comments on here about stuff you really don't understand? Or, were you just dying to unleash your brilliance on us after somone to be voted in who doesn't share your views and possess your worldly knowledge??? Please convince me that it was Obama and his team that destroyed this country after 1 month, 3 months, six months, 1yr, 15 months...I'm sure you've been saying it since Nov 5 of 2008, so please, share your infinite wisdom with all of us about how Obama, not Bush, destroyed our country. i'm just dying to know how we went from PERFECT on Jan 19, 2009 to DESTROYED in such a short period of time...i'll be waiting...

It really pays to be smart. While Obama and his team are gearing up for another show down for the Mid Term elections, these dumb Republicans keep getting distracted by their own negativity. Republicans need to listen to Newt Gingrich if they want to make any significant gain. He seems like the only smart guy they have for now. I just can't belive that they'll cry for everything. Obama appoints some one-they complain. A Democrat resign-they'll complain. Stern step down-they are complaining. Even a pregnant woman in labour is better off than these cry babies.

Chris I and Fair is Fair:

To whom are you referring when you say Obozo and O-blah-blah...Bush? Isn't Bozo usually reserved for people that are witless? You know, like DUBYA? I'm sure both of you could debate very successfully against Obama, especially if you can remember everything Rush and Beck have told you to believe...I sure hope you have the opportunity to go face-to-face and prove your points..

phoenix86 – Obama loves to villify the villians??? OH NO!!! WAKE UP! He speaks the truth about these people...could you justify a bonus in the millions for yourself if your company had just lost BILLIONS and face the public that lost those billions without security to protect you from their rage?

Man, people are just plain stupid...

The manufacturing that was done in this country was what made it great. For all you idiots who have had a taste of the Konservative Kool-aid, try not to think of where this country would be if we didn't have a manufacturing base in 1941. You would either be speaking German or Japanese. We don't make steel in this country anymore. I wonder where we would go to get tanks, vehicles and ships. We've farmed out our avionics industry to Asia. F-16's become just a toy without them. If there is ever a hot war similar to WW2, this country's goose is cooked. Then, I hope all the nutcases who gave so much power to the corporations and their greedy bosses will have plenty of time to think about their future while looking out from the barbed wire they deserve.

There has to be something in the water to bring out all this hate from Republicans, Tea Partiers, or whatever they call themselves. I have never seen so much hate, lack of respect, and apparent selfishness in my life. What is it exactly that has drawn out so much hate from the right?
