DeMint: Crist should drop out and endorse Rubio

Washington (CNN) – Sen. Jim DeMint said Wednesday that Florida Gov. Charlie Crist should abandon his Senate bid and endorse his Republican primary rival.

DeMint was asked about chatter that Crist, trailing badly against Marco Rubio in the primary, might decide to run as an independent instead. "I hope that won't happen," he responded.

"That is a sour grapes approach - when you find out you can't win, you bail out just like Arlen Specter did in his [Pennsylvania Republican] primary against Pat Toomey," DeMint said of a possible independent bid by Crist. "I hope that doesn't happen in Florida."

DeMint made his remarks about Crist during a conference call organized to tout his endorsement of Colorado Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck.

The South Carolina senator threw his support to Rubio last summer, before conservative activists rallied around the former state House speaker and catapulted him from a long-shot candidate to the frontrunner for the GOP nomination. DeMint has since been one of Rubio's most prominent backers.

Though Crist and his aides have pledged repeatedly that the governor will remain a Republican candidate, his campaign in recent days has avoided questions about a possible independent bid, sparking a new round of speculation and gossip. Crist has until April 30, the filing deadline, to remain in the GOP primary.

"I think there is magnanimous way for Marco's opponent to step out and support him," DeMint said of Crist.

With DeMint talking about "sour grapes approach" will someone ask him how he feels about a governor that bails in the middle of her first term because she became greedy.

DeMint don't live in Florida and should butt out of their business. Christ should not endorse Rubio if he don't feel good about this guy. Why put someone on the top of chart if he can't sing? Shut up Demint and mind your own house of troubles. Would you Rubio to endorse you?

Repugnant politicians are always full of advice. DeMint thinks Crist should give up without a fight and endorse that credit card scam artist Rubio.

Here's my advice for DeMint: Check into a mental institution.

That's a joke, right? If this freak show beats him in a primary he should run as an independent, like Lieberman.

Florida, South Carolina, and California are always causing problems for the rest of the nation. Floridians seem to be fascinated with stupidity because the more stupid of the two candidates always seems to win Florida elections. South Carolinians are just twisted and they will elect the more obnoxious, obstreperous, annoying, ignorant candidate in the state. Californians are confidently sailing the ship of state off a cliff, voting themselves all kinds of benefits and lower and lower taxes.

Why don't we let these three states secede and then they can pay us reparations for the damage they have done to the union over time.

DeMint should drop out and endorse Crist. DeMint should stay out of Florida's business. Rubio's election would continue to push the Republican Party further to the right. They should just change their name to the American Taliban Party!

I think Demint should worry about South Carolina and mind his own business. Rubio will ruin Florida, what's left of it.

Hilarious! Naturally he's calling for the resignation of SC"s philandering Governor as well because he's hurting GOP chances at holding the office, right? Oh, he's not? Must be some mistake then.

Demint needs to mind his own business and take care of his people in South Carolina. I can't believe he's against health care and want to waste the taxpayers money in trying to get rid of it. His state has a lot of poor people that really needs health care. How did he ever get elected?

I think Crist should drop-out and run as an Indie, because the National Republican party hasn't has his back since he took office, and the Local Republican party is full of crooks, and frauds with party issued credit cards.

I have some advice for Jim DeMented: You and Sarah Palin just keep on keeping on. You will suceed in totally alienating the 70 percent of sensible, sane voters out there. Just gotta love it.

Crist should tell DeMint to "get lost." I suspect that folks in Florida are more likely to support Crist as a matter of state pride and to tell outsiders to stay out of this....especially a fellow Republican.

I don't understand the GOP. Mr. Steele and the establishment threw their support behind Crist. Then the GOP let's the far right hijack them and Rubio comes up.

So Crist took a picture with President Obama. If Rubio does win and Obama visited the state of Florida, wouldn't someone be there and welcome the President to their state? That's all Gov crist did.

He accepted stimulus funds (just as Gov Perry, Gov Jindal and other GOP governors) to save jobs in their state. In my opinion they are the hyprocrits. At least Gov Crist accepted funds and told teh citizens of Florida why.

Governor Crist should explore and utilize whatever options are legally available and appropriate as he sees it. The last I heard, Crist did not seek any advice or counsel from Senator DeMint.

Someone, please tell us what he had to say about that kind of thing when Lieberman pulled it. Run as an independent Crist...they clearly don't think you're "pure" enough for them anymore and will scream about fiscal responsibility while supporting Rubio, despite his flagrant abuses of the peoples' money.
