DeMint: Crist should drop out and endorse Rubio

Sen. Jim DeMint said Wednesday during a conference call that Florida Gov. Charlie Crist should end his Senate bid and endorse rival Marco Rubio.

Washington (CNN) – Sen. Jim DeMint said Wednesday that Florida Gov. Charlie Crist should abandon his Senate bid and endorse his Republican primary rival.

DeMint was asked about chatter that Crist, trailing badly against Marco Rubio in the primary, might decide to run as an independent instead. "I hope that won't happen," he responded.

"That is a sour grapes approach - when you find out you can't win, you bail out just like Arlen Specter did in his [Pennsylvania Republican] primary against Pat Toomey," DeMint said of a possible independent bid by Crist. "I hope that doesn't happen in Florida."

DeMint made his remarks about Crist during a conference call organized to tout his endorsement of Colorado Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck.

The South Carolina senator threw his support to Rubio last summer, before conservative activists rallied around the former state House speaker and catapulted him from a long-shot candidate to the frontrunner for the GOP nomination. DeMint has since been one of Rubio's most prominent backers.

Though Crist and his aides have pledged repeatedly that the governor will remain a Republican candidate, his campaign in recent days has avoided questions about a possible independent bid, sparking a new round of speculation and gossip. Crist has until April 30, the filing deadline, to remain in the GOP primary.

"I think there is magnanimous way for Marco's opponent to step out and support him," DeMint said of Crist.

DeMint is the one who should drop out; but i think he will not get reelected any way. I say to Crist go Independent that is were most of the real conservatives of the Republican party are going to have to go anyway unless they turn Democrat because the current Republicans have no room for anyone unless they are far far far right.

Ken Buck is frightening, so that doesn't bode well for his backers, either. He's a far-right, talking-point parrot. And his crackers come from the likes of DeMint.

Idiot demint knows nothing – he called Healthcare reform Obama's waterloo and turned out to be his – this nutcase is your typical GOP leader who knows nothing. Now he wants slimeball Rubio to stand and Crist to drop out. Its people like Crist who still is a true republican – the GOP is overrun by extremism – no one should vote for these crackheads – they are NOT REPUBLICAN

Well... my take on DeMint handing out advice is that anyone inclined to take advice from this off the Richter scale of whackos ought not to be in office to begin with. He is one of the most racist, malicious and narrow-minded "minds" in Washington. I received mail from this guy a few weeks back and was afraid to touch it, much less open it. Straight to the recycle bin.

I live in SC. I can't imagine anyone listening to anything DeMint has to say about anything but, then again, SC has Joe Wilson, too, and people not only listen to him but also give the nimrod money – and vote for him. Both of these fine elected members of Congress support the Teabagggers, who, in the words of Craig Ferguson, have taken the name of the perfectly good practice of dangling testicles into someone's mouth and turned it into something dirty and disgusting.

I don't think it's sour grapes; I think DeMint calling it that is just typical GOP spin. Their strategy is to label events and people, in an effort to tell people what to think, instead of letting them decide for themselves. (God forbid people should think for themselves!)

I think Crist is considering a run as an Independent because he's showing some backbone and not appreciating being vilified by the GOP because he hasn't followed in lockstep the GOP line of opposing President Obama, regardless of the consequences to his (Crist's and our country's) constituents.

Rubio is an idiot and if the people of Florida elect him, then they get all the problems they most certainly will have.

What is with our country that we have so many people willing to let their fear and ignorance drive their actions?

What a bunch of wusses! Remember FDR saying the only thing we have to fear is fear itself? Don't they get that FDR was talking about how fear drives people to make very bad decisions, and leaves them vulnerable to being manipulated into hurting their own self-interests?

If all these whiny Republicans and teabaggers had been the majority of Americans during World War II, we would have LOST!

Charlie Crist is another filthy politician we have here in Florida. He has not even finished his term and we are experiencing one of the most severe economic crisis in Florida while he campaigns for Senate. He is not getting my vote and no don't even run for Governor again start practicing law your time is over.

Wasn't long ago republicans were dropping like flies. Now they're the finger pointers but they still smell the same. The odor of something dying. Palin can blow on their stems all she wants. I don't think she's going to revive them.

  21. Deminted is Rubio's Waterloo

Senator Deminted should resign from the Senate and endorse Crist. Anything else would be sour grapes. Why should the Florida voters have a choice, when Deminted can decide it for them?

DeMint's mind has been DeMinted. DeMint is a nut job. He needs to go to the secure location where ex-VP Cheney can be found and baby sit him. They are like two peas in a pot. I looked up the word stupid in the dictionary and found pictures of Jim DeMint and Cheney

Jim DeMint is the one who thought up the notion that defeating health care reform would be Obama's Waterloo. How'd that strategy work for ya, Jim? You got a bill, ENTIRELY shaped by Democrats because you wouldn't play, and it passed. It's now law of the land, and your party has egg on its face. So now Crist should take your advice and quit? Why?

And I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting real sick of these reactionary carpetbaggers coming into my state, into my town, and telling me my mayor/governor/senator/representative isn't conservative enough to please THEM!

Go home. Get a job. Fight against your OWN local, state and Congressional representatives.

I feel the REAL reason they want Crist to step down is because of the fact he is rumored to be in the closet and too many people know it......
