DeMint: Crist should drop out and endorse Rubio

Washington (CNN) – Sen. Jim DeMint said Wednesday that Florida Gov. Charlie Crist should abandon his Senate bid and endorse his Republican primary rival.

DeMint was asked about chatter that Crist, trailing badly against Marco Rubio in the primary, might decide to run as an independent instead. "I hope that won't happen," he responded.

"That is a sour grapes approach - when you find out you can't win, you bail out just like Arlen Specter did in his [Pennsylvania Republican] primary against Pat Toomey," DeMint said of a possible independent bid by Crist. "I hope that doesn't happen in Florida."

DeMint made his remarks about Crist during a conference call organized to tout his endorsement of Colorado Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck.

The South Carolina senator threw his support to Rubio last summer, before conservative activists rallied around the former state House speaker and catapulted him from a long-shot candidate to the frontrunner for the GOP nomination. DeMint has since been one of Rubio's most prominent backers.

Though Crist and his aides have pledged repeatedly that the governor will remain a Republican candidate, his campaign in recent days has avoided questions about a possible independent bid, sparking a new round of speculation and gossip. Crist has until April 30, the filing deadline, to remain in the GOP primary.

"I think there is magnanimous way for Marco's opponent to step out and support him," DeMint said of Crist.

Funny how the Republican Party is making it's candidates pass "purity tests," while simultaneously supporting David Vitter.

I like Crist better than Rubio. I think he shouldn't be bullied to step down.

So, you are telling Floridians what to do and who to vote for, because there is nothing left to do in YOUR state?

Rubio is a joke. This is another prime example of how the GOP doesn't have any room for moderate views.

Why why why WHY does Charlie Crist INSIST on belonging to a party that doesn't want him?

If the voters will vote for Crist as an independent, that's up to them. If the GOP is afraid that will dilute votes for the other candidate, tough cookies. If the party of Lincoln will remember that moderate is not a bad word, they would get more votes. Regan had a big tent...

Sen DeMint is unhappy because Gov. Christ has not followed the so-called party line. Unfortunately, this is just another instance of poor judgment on the part of the Senator. He continuously makes statements that are detrimental to others. There are probably many people who just wish that Sen. DeMint would keep his opinions to himself.

Gov. Christ did a good job as governor of Florida. He looks for quality legislation and does not follow the GOP line. He would be a great addition to the Senate. The Republican Party needs critical thinkers and not people who are so bound to the GOP that they cannot think fr themselves.

I hope Florida does the right thing on election day. To choose another person who is so aligned with the GOP that he cannot be innovative, creative, and fair. We do not need a senate full of Sen. DeMints

Jim Demented needs to drop out. He is a radical conservative crazy, as is Marco Rubio. Charlie Crist is a traditional, common sense republican who has been a great governor for Florida. Crist should not even consider quitting or giving in to the tea party thugs like Marco Rubio or Jim Demented. If he is forced out of the republican party by today's conservative crazies, then he should run as an independent. Many people say they are mad at both political parties, so if that is true, Crist should stand a good chance of winning as an independent.

What a bunch of useless tools writing on this site. Get a job you bums, stop leeching of the rest of us while you write comments that a fourth grader would be ashamed of. Republican and Democrats are enemies of freedom and need to be eliminated any way necessary.

But, moving ahead to 2012 – Hillary Clinton is the only viable Dem choice. Barack is too narcissistic, too obtuse, too naive, too obfuscating, too arrogant and too out of touch to have any credibility.

And, the pseudo-intellectuals have no wisdom or knowledge to discern tidily squat! :)

I really do not think that America wants a Republican in office for awhile until the Democrats as usual fix the problems they have made to base their politics off of.
