Dems dismiss Tea Party activists

Tea Party activists were in Washington on Thursday.
Tea Party activists were in Washington on Thursday.

Washington (CNN) – As Tea Party activists mounted protests in Washington and announced a list of Congressional Democrats they're targeting for defeat in November, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed the group's impact on Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections and argued the Tea Party could hurt Republicans.

"I think it's going to have an impact on Republicans in November. We always just keep our eye on the ball as to what our own races are and keep going in a forward direction," Pelosi said Thursday.

Pelosi explained that Republicans could suffer is because Tea Party activists are promoting conservative challenges to GOP candidates in their primaries.

While the speaker said she welcomes "any and all voices of the American people," she said that Democrats have the message and the money to prevail in November.

Our message about health care, about job creation, about fiscal responsibility, about lowering taxes for the middle class, about stabilizing the economy," she said. "We believe will hold us in good stead.".

But House GOP leader John Boehner, who spoke at an Orlando Tea Partyevent earlier this week, said Thursday Republicans were working to earn the support of the Tea Party activists. "We are going to talk with them and listento them and we are going to walk amongst them and again earn their support this November."

Boehner said Democrats aren't listening to the concerns of the protesters, and noted that people at Tea Party events around the country only represent a fraction of Americans who are frustrated with the current leadership in Washington and could prove to be a powerful force.

"Just remember this, these people are just the tip of the iceberg. You all know that 90 percent of the iceberg you don't see. They represent the same concerns, the same worries, the same fears of tens of millions of additional Americans who just haven't quite gotten off the couch or out of the easy chair and into the street," Boehner said. And he warned, "Democrats better look out."

Although Pelosi waved off concerns about Tea Party groups, a couple of Ohio Democrats, who gathered to tout middle class tax relief on Thursday, took aim at the Tea Party activists mounting protests in their districts and accused them of misinforming the public about Democrats' record on taxes and health care.

Rep. Steve Driehaus, who represents Cincinnati - where the Tea Party has organized a tax day protest featuring Fox News host Sean Hannity - acknowledged "there are very legitimate concerns that are energizing folks to participate in the Tea Party," pointing to serious economic uncertainty for many in his state.

But he criticized some members of the group, saying "the Tea Party and other leaders are playing upon that fear and they're exacerbating that fear to their political advantage." The Ohio Democrat added, "you hear a lot of fear" at Tea Party events, but he argued the group's leaders presents very few facts. He said the challenge for Democrats is getting the facts out so that the public understands their record before the fall election.

Another Ohio Democratic freshman, Rep John Boccieri, said he's probably had more Tea Party events in his district than any other member in Ohio. He echoed Driehaus' charge about the rhetoric at Tea Party events. "We do have to substantiate the difference between facts and fear."

Boccieri accused some of the anti-government protestors of talking out of both sides of their mouth - railing against government intrusion while at the same time accepting federal benefits. " What's so ironic about this, is that the very things they suggest they are against they will gladly take and support."

The Tea Party aren't republicans... they just happen to endorse almost all republicans, target all democrats, frequently invite republican politicians to their events, have the republicans co-organize their events, and rely on a republican consulting firm for funding. Oh no, they aren't republican...

I have heard this really stupid argument many times. Think about it. This is an argument you might expect from a 6 year old. I hope Representative Boccieri has a second career choice to fall back on. If this is his best attempt at logical argument, his political career will be short.

As a progressive republican, I see this whole political hullabaloo as a North vs South thing. I mean think about it. The tea party is hand in hand with the Republican Party. Against Obama. What does Obama stand for: EQUALITY UNDER THE LAW. His 1st legislative effort EQUAL PAY. Now come on we know our history when it comes to THAT, especially when the health care law helps people who are disadvantaged, so the Confederacy is alive once again. Look at the Tea Partiers, don't they look like the confederacy??? What you didn't know there was BLACK Confederate soldiers, check the story

Pelosme is such an idiot. When she was interviewed by Candy Crowley she had all nice things to say about the tea partiers. Now its they can hurt the Republican party. Hey Pelosme they are voting a Republican ticket you moron. This movement is growing every day and by November they might have mulitudes of tea partiers.

it is nice to see that in some states groups are coming out in opposition to the tea baggers. They are expressing in a very civil manner that not everyone thinks the president is a socialist and they support health care. More people should do that. The old addage the squeeking wheel gets the grease is true. More people should stand against thes nuts. Most Americans are not crazy and need to speak out.

I will not support any canidate who is backed by the tea party. If the tea party leaders came out and equally critcized democrats and republicans who over spend and don't follow the same rules the rest of america follows that would be ok . But mostly it is a partisan organization and that will be it's downfall.

What exactly are these "legitimate corcerns"? The want to keep their SSI & Medicare but are against others being offered affordable health care. They want to "take back our country" from some undisclosed person or persons, while they are afforded the freedom to travel from state to state complaining that "their" freedom is being taken away. They claim they are overtaxed but they still seem to have plenty of money for tour busses, renting halls, and of course paying Sarah tens of thousands of dollars for each appearance. I think it's the Republicans that need to worry. This group is NEVER going to vote for any Democrat no matter what, so when they figure out how they are being used by the GOP they will turn on them with a vengence.

I'm really BEYOND sick to bloody death of the tea people. WAY beyond. Teahadists, this is my country, too, you know! And I totally, completely, and utterly do NOT support you or what you are doing. I'm a REAL AMERICAN, too. In fact, my ancestors literally fought and were wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill. I think my claim is pretty strong to being a Real American. So you can take your elitism that says that anyone who doesn't agree with you is a socialist or a terrorist or a nazi or whatever other names you call and shove it. Go back to your retirement homes and sit on the porch and yell at the children as they go by.

He took our money and put our children in debt. We are now trying to pay for his fret party. Do not blame someone else for his mess.

The "Tea Partiers" themselves and the people that defend them attempt to picture these groups as just your ordinary citizens who are concerned about their government. If that were true and they made an effort to improve things by attitude, legitimate involvemant such as really understanding what is happening by reading honest material and learning from non partisan sources, just what improvements they could help bring about, I think the rest of the country would have a better picture of their activities. What i see is a loud bunch of people carrying signs that at best are disgusting,no help to anyone including their party and give the impression that they have learned everything they know from the Michelle Bachmanns and Sarah Palins of the country. This is all worthless, misguided talk meant to just stir up the masses which it obviously does, accomplishing NOTHING.

Shame on you CNN for not holding this group accountable for their rhetoric, they are trying to incite violence, I have heard on CNN their so called leaders doing so and you let it slide, disgusting.

As for their platform, all I get is that they want a "to each their own" governing philosphy. What are they going to completely abandon the elderly and disabled? If they had their way the poverty and crime rates would skyrocket and the US would soon become a police state.

Once again, I flip to CNN (on my way to some REAL journalism at FOX News) to see CNN's right-slanted "coverage" of a tea party featuring background music that sounds like circus music as the "journalist" Pete picks out the few in the crowd in weird costumes. Once again, it is CNN's attempt to paint them all as a bunch of nuts!! No real coverage of the majority of the people that were there or any real interviewing of them or talking about the issues that bring them there. Maybe all of you at CNN will start taking the people that attend these tea party meetings seriously in November.

Supposedly they are better educated, but the education tooks place so long ago that they are now ignorant as to the problems with America. Also, with a much greater income than most, I guess they don't know what poverty is either! There was a "rally" here also at our state capital. About a thousand people showed up. 15,000 people showed up last year at the gay pride parade.

Yeah, the Dems wish the Tea Party would go away–just like the British wished Sam Adams and the Committees of Correspondence would just go away in the early 1770s.

Nancy Pelosi views the Tea Party movement as a Republican effort. It is a conservative movement which is why the party is not afraid to challenge members of both parties. The Republicans failed to lead when they were in power. The Dems are even worse. A third political party or force is needed to bring real change to Washington. I hope it succeeds.

Too many deficits; too many special interest deals; too much finger pointing between the GOP and Dems. It is time for real change.

The Democratic Party has nothing to gain by catering to the Tea Party crowd in any way.

Let them keep doing what they're doing, and they will eventually split the Republican Party in two. Maybe not in November, but by 2012 the GOP as we know it will basically be split in two. It is hard to imagine there NOT being a third party candidate in 2012, maybe Rand Paul, who siphons off a good portion of the conservative vote.

Which means four more years of Obama.

I don't know what the tea party members are like in other parts of the country, but out here in very conservative (65% Republican leaning) South Orange County, CA, they tend to horribly misinformed and ready to panic at a moment's notice. I can't believe how many e-mails I get from tea party supporting friends about "the latest Obama bill to take away our guns" or "Obama's favorite pork projects" or... Almost 100% of the time, when one investigates the presumed bill that they're all up in arms about, it either never existed, or the bill named is a completely different bill, or the bill was soundly defeated ten years ago. Yet these people keep passing along these rumors, without ever checking them out, believing them to be completely factual because, gosh arn it , their e-mail wouldn't lie to them!

Heard one interview where a tea partier said he "wants government to leave him alone." Do these people REALLY want nothing from the government?
It appears that many of these people take for granted the services and protections that the government provides with tax dollars - roads, schools, military, food and industrial regulation, clean water, clean air (and soc. sec and medicare on which many of these tea partiers depend, whether they will admit it or not)... if the government doesn't collect tax money and manage these services, the services will cease to exist. I suppose tea partiers think that we don't need the govt to take care of these things, that somehow they will be taken care of. Which brings me to my point – these people are delusional.

Thank you Nancy Pelosi. This is just the news that the Tea Party needs to hear. Obviously, you don't get out much to listen to people or see what is going on. I guess you are still unaware of what happened in the beloved Democratic State of Mass. Living in a fantasy world must be so nice. You really helped out your buddies by making this stupid statement. Boy, are you ever going to eat those words in November. Of course, as usual you will have some lame excuse to blame it on. It will be because all the Republicans are racist, or maybe the Democrats did not read and understand the ballots, or, I know, it is Bush's fault.

The Tea Party Movement will fail. Its members are not willing to die for its cause. They are willing to commit violence and possibly even murder. But they are not willing to die.

The civil rights movement was a real movement, its members could care less about being jailed and there has never been an accurate count of how many died for the beliefs in which they fought. Suffice it to say at least tens of thousands actually died.

If you consider yourself to be a tea party member and you think you can create real change through name calling and intimidation you will be gravely disappointed. Some of you will have to loose your lives. But we all know that the changes you are fighting for are not worth your life. Those changes are only worth other peoples lives and so you will fail.

It's always fun to watch the conservatives implode themselves. Boehner does himself and the Republican Party no favor by aligning himself with these Tea Party People.. He is enjoying all the noise they are creating for now but when it comes down to the elections he will have to witness the huge split in his own party. He can applaud the fringe for now but the damage done by election time will be to his party. The rhetoric of the "Tea Party" folks sounds familiar. William L. Shierer in his book "The Rise and Fall of The Thrid Reich", described elements of The Nationalist Socialist Party and their message of fear and loathing in pre-Nazi Germany.

They successfully manipulated the electorate and the legislative process, leading to the ascent of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party to power. If you tell a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.

But hey! It couldn't happen here. ...could it?

Speaker Pelosi's dismissal of the Tea Party and the legitimate voices of a significant number of American voters just further demonstrates how incredibly out of touch she is with mainstream and main street America. She seems to have no concept of how alien her thought processes and political views are to the vast majority of Americans who live either beyond the Beltway or outside her extremely liberal San Franciso district. She is in no danger of losing her seat because she faithfully represents the voters of her district. But there are many, many Democrats who will lose their seats this November because they followed Speaker Pelosi's political ideology instead of the wishes of their hometown constituents. Hopefully, by the time the next Congress is seated in January 2011, she will once again be "The Honorable Congresswoman Pelosi" and no longer "Madame Speaker Pelosi."

If these people would stop their foaming at the mouth for a minute, they would realize that they got a TAX CUT this year, that the TARP money is being repaid by the banks, that they themselves are huge recipients of government money via SS and Medicare, and that their arguments are based on lies from Beck, Hannity, Bachmann and the queen of sarcasm, Madame Sarah.Nothing they say is benefiting anyone but Palin's huge pocketbook, and they are driving a wedge between themselves and the rest of the country. I am not a huge Pelosi fan, but I think she is right on this one...it is Republicans who will suffer in November, because they have refused to do anything but whine about what's wrong, and not work to make anything better.

Its currently center-left as they elected President Obama and a host of Democrats the past two election cycles and they'll more than likely elect more thanks to the Tea Party cannibalizing GOP candidate votes. Even if the Tea Party candidate loses, they'll sap the money straight from the GOP candidate making the Democrat's chances better. Thanks Tea Party, you're ensuring Obama's re-election in 2012. Its fine to protest against things you don't agree with but when your message only has anger and negativity behind it then the average person turns away from you and thinks your a loon. Unfortunately anger and negativity is all the republican party has had to offer thier fellow americans at this time and I am not surprised to see the tea party follow suit. Unfortunately the republican party had to convince people they were angry (because angry people vote) just so they could get back into power. The tea party movement is one sided instead of really realizing what some corporation in America are really doing. Some corporations in America are depending on the American public for support, Corporate Welfare! The Tea Party’s movement is to assure that its members continue to get paid at their current level; they assert that the government is trying to take over.
Who would be that stupid to invest in a private owned company without an investment interest? If the Federal government gave an private corporation money without an interest without protecting the peoples interest than it should have been dismantled.

The problem (among others) with the Tea Party is that they questions they are framing are non-discussable. They are not really issues at all. How does one debate the concept of "freedom"? Hey, what about Iran? Economics? Global Warming? North Korea? Energy? The Tea Party is all slogans and patriotic hot air balloons.

Once thing I know for sure. Their anger is partly fueled by Obama telling Americans to be realistic about the future, and stop thinking we are all going to Go West and kill the buffalo and build railroads.

These Tea Party activists are the same bunch who didn't like Clinton's efforts to balance the budget because they included raising taxes on the wealthy. When the budget was balanced and the debt was actually being paid back in the late 90's they followed George W. Bush like a pied piper. He kept piping. "It is your money, it is your money." and they willfully forgot it was also “their debt." Now since the Bush years produced the economic "perfect storm," we have no reserves and have to add debt to the debt that should have already been paid down to recover from the mess. Not to mention the deficits already accumulating from two unfunded wars. When they point their collective finger they need to see three pointing back at them and grow up.

They are staying focused on the race?!?!?!?!? They should be focused on the business of increasing the powers of the states and the freeedoms of American citizens. Anyone notice that while our federal government is spending more money than ever our states are all cutting budgets, services, and jobs? We need a revolution, and it takes as much courage to stand up to these fat, worthless, selfish, self serving politicians as it did when our ancestors fought for our freedom those many years ago. Our forefathers would be so ashamed of our cowardice:( Believe in the strength of our spirit! It is our duty to overthrow our corrupt and inept government. The tea party is a ridiculous notion - they are completely uninformed. 95% of Americans received a tax cut this year. The fact is that Obama has done more good for American in 1.5 years that Bush did in 8 years, and THAT pisses off the republicans. They were not able to deliver for America. Here's what the GOP gave us: 9/11, two wars, massive deficits (starting from a surplus), failure after Katrina ('heck of a job, Brownie'), illegal torture, no child left behind (which left behind more children than ever before), loss of respect for America overseas. Here's what we have received from Obama in 1.5 years: Restoration of respect for America overseas, health care reform, tax cuts, reduction of nukes, an economy well on the way to recovery. Are we better off with the GOP? You tell me.

Mrs. Pelosi has shared the truth as to what she believes. "The Tea Party is insignificant. They don't really matter. They might matter to someone else. "

Any politician who believe her people are insignificant because they seek a better answer than the answer their congressman provides, is guilty of arrogance. Dissenters to her decisions don't matter.

The friend who was most against gov't healthcare is, in fact, a lifetime recipient of gov't healthcare as a military dependent, and thrilled to pieces with the care her mother got through Medicare. She has yet to rationalize to my satisfaction why it's good enough for her whole family but not good enough for me.

Fear and facts don't go hand in hand. That's why there is concerted effort to juice up the anger among conservatives, there is so much easier to manipulate the crowd.

Pelosi: "While the speaker said she welcomes "any and all voices of the American people," she said that Democrats have the message and the money to prevail in November."

So money buys the vote? You certainly don't have the message so it must be the money...

Pelosi has never welcomed the voice of Americans, she has however welcomed the "future of America." That would be the "people without papers" as we refer to them here in California.

The money to prevail. Reminds me of the mafia.

The Pittsburgh event had probably 700 to 1000 people (I counted from my 11th floor office window). Not too impressive in a downtown that has about 125,000 to 150,000 people on any given weekday.

Anyone with half a brain dismisses these angry white bigoted Republican misfits. The only people secretly worried are dyed in the wool Republicans who pray the Tea Partiers do not upset their plans for reelection. Go Sarah Make Up and No Brains, do in the Republican Party, you are the dream girl of every Democrat because you are just so brazenly stupid.

If the 'true' issue of the Tea Party is fair taxes then they would go after the Republican led Corporations who appear to be the largest tax evaders in American history instead of being largely bankrolled by them.

And when it comes to cleaning up the huge environmental disasters those same Republican led tax evading Corporations cause to the tune of Hundreds of Millions of dollars per site, WHO PAYs the CLEAN UP?

American taxpayers are stuck with that huge tax bill also, the Republican placed Federal Jurists and Appeal Court Jurists routinely disallow huge major settlements against these Corporations for the toxic dumping and cleanup costs

Well I listened to some of the speeches yesterday from those party people and generally speaking their "facts" are pretty much out of wack. Government should be doing things like maintaining law and order, providing health care and education, regulating natural resourses and banking etc ... there's plenty of room for critzizm and improvment but I trust Obama's administration far more than the apperent fanatics I've seen so far.

Don't fall for the fake tea partiers. The real Tea Party people are Ron Paul supporters.

The Neo-Cons are tricking and corraling some of the sheep back into the republican party. The Ron Paul supporters are real Patriots.

    Real Tea Party people want:
    -End all illegal wars
    -End the Patriot Act
    -End torture
-Bring troops home from all over the world
    -Enforce illegal immigration laws

These Tea Party activists were founded on a platform against excessive taxation, but now they are crackpot extreme conservatives that have no solutions. A spokesperson was on Campbell Brown and she asked her is she willing to give up her Medicare and Social Security which are entitlement programs and the woman was a bumbling fool. These people just hate to have a black President. PERIOD!!!!

These Tea Party kooks have no idea how foolish they come off. Their leaders are Sarah Palin and Michelle Buchanan, the Lucy and Ethel of the Lunatic Fringe, and they decry socialism but don't mind accepting unemployment benefits, social security and medicare. Typical Republican hypocrisy.

Who is funding the Tea Party?!?!? These protestors seem to not have any jobs because they are protesting all of the time during the week. They are funded by Conservative PAC's and corporations that are against the reform of this administration.

Don't be naive Pelosi – angry, loud, ignorant and fear-mongering right-wingers cost you the 2004 presidential election. And least I remind you, these folks have money – the more to spread their lies with.

Better start spreading the truth or you all (dems) are doomed.

Pilosi is a democratic IDIOT. A traitor to her country and no better than Jane Fonda. Pilosi dismisses the tea party activists, who does she think she is, the misiah? She is a lump of nothing. I would have a lot more to say, however, like O'Bama, she listens to no one. She will find out who is dismissed in November. I hope she is the first to go.

Pelosi needs to take a look at the bigger picture...which is that such a large number of Americans are so fed up with the current state of government they are out protesting in mass numbers. This is not a GOP thing...it is a dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in our great country. I am not a Tea Party goer but I too am frustrated with the way things are going, I will honestly say I have never seen this level of revolution with the American people in my 32 year lifetime. I think the last time Americans came out in mass numbers like this...was Vietnam.

of course Pelosi disrespects anyone not like her.
Pelosi has $25 MILLION in cash. along with her husband they control 52 companies.

most importantly Pelosi and family do NOT hire union employees.

Pelosi is such an elitist boor. She sniffs at the Tea Party as if it is not worthy of her political brilliance. She believes her exalted station should be sufficient evidence to prove she knows what's best for America. She reminds me exactly of the French aristocracy living off the backs of the poor as they flit through life. I only wish she were up for re-election in 2010. I will have to wait until 2012 to send her packing.

The Tea Party is about as fair & balanced as Republicans get. Started by Dick Armey & promoted by Fox news. The party is a bunch of disgruntled Republicans who now claim to be independent. What Republicans really need is IDEAS & a willingness to work with the Democrats to solve problems.
