White House slams latest 'birther' move

White House aides are scoffing at a move in the Arizona legislature to force President Obama to show his birth certificate to get on the state's ballot in 2012 for his likely re-election battle.

(CNN) - White House aides are scoffing at a move in the Arizona legislature to force President Obama to show his birth certificate to get on the state's ballot in 2012 for his likely re-election battle.

"This is a question that has been answered exhaustively," White House spokesman Bill Burton told CNN. "I can't imagine Arizona voters think their tax dollars are well served by a legislature that is less focused on their lives than in fringe right-wing radio conspiracy theories."

The Arizona House voted Monday by a 31-22 margin to require all presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States in order to meet the constitutional requirement. The measure still has to be considered by the Arizona state Senate before it can become law.

When the issue first popped up during the 2008 presidential election, the Obama campaign released the then-senator's birth certificate showing that he was born in Hawaii. In December 2008, after Obama was elected, the U.S. Supreme Court turned down an emergency appeal from a New Jersey man claiming Obama was ineligible to serve as president.

So whats the uproar if Obama has a legit birth certificate. Its a good idea I think for top elected officials to show their birth certificates when they get elected.

Here's what I don't get. Obama just loves to prove people wrong so why doesn't he just whip out the old birth certificate and do it. Just sayin.

Well don't be surprised by this. I expected a state like Arizona to pull this stunt. Remember Arizona was one of the last states that recognized Martin Luther King Holiday. Now, after electing the first black president, after 43 white presidents, all of the sudden they are concerned about the birth certificate? Now, Arizona is might be passing their own immigration law. REALLY, ARIZONA? Can everybody say BIGOTS. Thank you for showing your true colors ARIZONA

And people say it's not about BS politics! This is the crap that's killing our country. Left, right, middle, whoever! Wasting money on something even the Supreme Court has answered the question on!

The State of Arizona is soooo backwards. It regularly participates in knee jerk reactions. How the Republicans have crowed about the Democrats running the whole show in Congress. Now look at what happens when the Republicans run everything in Arizona, house, senate, and the governor. Look at the nasty legislation that emerges. It goes along with this moron sheriff we have in Maricopa county and now the one in Cochise county.

When Janet Napolitano was the governor at least there was someone adding civility to the process.

How pathetic are these people in the Birthers movement? The man has proven his citizenship, and they are still at it. It is just sad that there are people in this country that can't stand the fact that there is a Black man in the White House.

Hey Arizona, thanks for reminding America that South Carolina is not the dumbest state in the union.

This bill would have eliminated John McCain from the ballot in 2008.

The Constitution says that the President must be a "natural born" US citizen ... but doesn't define what that term means.

It could be argued with credibility that Senator McCain is a "natural born" Panamanian.

Do people in Arizona know that John McCain was born in Panama?

So, then he needs to prove as well his citizenship if he runs for prez again. FOOLS!!

You can't pass a State law against the Feds, wake up!

With all the important issues in the world today, the Arizona Legislatures wants to waste their time and tax payer's money on this sophomoric piece of legislation. Hate makes one do strange and foolish things.
If President Obama stays in office for 8 years(as I believe he will), the Conservatives will bankrupt their respective states trying to hasass him.

If I lived in Arizona, I'd be embarassed by such stupidity.

This is like former Alabama Governor George Wallace standing in the way of black students as they attended college in the 1960s.

Barack Hussien Obama is the Commander-in-Chief, the Chief Executive and the President of the United States of America.

As much as they wish this was 1918 when women couldn't vote and blacks knew their place, it's not. What are they going to do when white people are no longer the majority in this country?

It would be far better for these birthers to spend their time on something else.

Those old redneck, racist, birthers need to get a life, I guess it never occured to them that some of us might just be happy with our President, we choose not to scrutinize everything about him. Losers!

Should we now refer to Arizona as the 'land of the birthers'? How ridiculous can a State Legislature get? But then, they gave us Kyl and McCain who gave us Palin didn't they?

Why does this issue keep coming up? I thought it was resolved long ago. He was born in Hawaii, and last time I checked, Hawaii was part of the U.S. Is there something I'm missing?

Is this really still an issue? Maybe what we need to do is show them a MAP of America. this way they can see that Hawaii is a part of the US and they stop this madness.

It is an issue because it has been answered only verbally.
People want a verified, honest, birth cerrtificate presented...in all honesty...it's not a difficult thing to do. Show it and the story ends.

Go find something else to do with your pathetic lives and let the rest of us enjoy having a president who actually accomplishes things!
