Arizona governor signs immigration bill

PHOENIX, Arizona (CNN) – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a state bill Friday that requires police to determine whether a person is in the United States legally, which critics say will foster racial profiling and discrimination but supporters say will crack down on illegal immigration.

The Republican governor also issued an executive order that would require additional training for local officers on how to implement the law without engaging in racial profiling.

"This training will include what does and does not constitute reasonable suspicion that a person is not legally present in the United States," Brewer said after signing the bill.

Previously, officers could check someone's immigration status only if that person was suspected in another crime.

As Arizona continues to battle with South Carolina as the biggest joke in the nation, Arizona may have just pulled ahead in the battle.

Hmmmm – since it's an AZ state law, guess AZ state taxes will have to be raised for all the law-suits and all the new prisoners, etc.

Or will McInsane ask for pork to bail his state out of bankruptcy?

Maybe they can cut funding for schools - education obviously is not important to those idiots. Just guns in bars, and kicking out people who "look funny".

Sadly this is what it's come to. The federal government should have did it's job and stop looking the other way. Don't leave the house without an ID.

Maybe in the 1880's, Geronimo should have signed an order not allowing immigrants into Arizona, and we would not have to deal with the likes of Brewer, McCain and Kyl.

    Arizona 2010 = Warsaw 1939.

The best thing would be if all the latino/african american police officers start pulling over the rich White people in Mercedes's and BMW's and if they don't have their birth certificate..they go to the slammer.

That would stop this pretty quick.

Thank God. Finally, some state is going to do what the United States Government has been refusing to do. The current Administration doesn't want to offend 20-30 million future Democrats, which they have in mind after cramming an amnesty bill through before they lose the big majority in Congress. Every state needs to pass the same bill, especially the rest of the border states.

I think people are a little confused: a driver's license is not proof of citizenship. So if you get pulled over and have only a driver's license on you, you can probably be taken to jail until you can prove otherwise. This is a very bad law that is a slippery slope to police misbehavior. I think everyone should boycott Arizona businesses and move out of the state if the opportunity presents itself.

This law is unconstitutional and it goes after the wrong people. The criminals are the AZ RESIDENTS that hire illegal immigrants as gardeners, nannies, construction workers, restaurant workers etc.

If AZ government would go after the businesses who hire illegals and they were prosecuted, the illegal jobs would dry up, and with no work the illegals would leave and go home.

This approaches the problem from the wrong end. The employers should be held accountable but I guess the Governor doesn't want to give up all her household help. What a bunch of hypocrites!

When people are crossing the border to kidnap people for ransom the state lawmakers have to do something to try and curb the crimes committed by illegal aliens, not doing so would be an agregiouss act of mismanagement by government officials. This is one Obama needs to sit down and shut up about, unless he's going to deal with the problem.

The Grand Canyon is probably crumbling right now as that racist bigot governor brewer speaks. Boycott AZ tourism.
his has nothing to do with the law. Why wait until now? Does mccain's hatred of President Obama and his loss of the election run this deep that the repugs have to go this far in his state?
She just said – "Racial profiling is illegal". Put down the description?" You mean brown, right? "We are a nation of law?" Racial profiling? "She doesn't know what 'they' look like?"
The nazi party is alive and well except it's not President Obama, it's the republikkans who need to look at themselves in the mirror.
The blue eyed blondes from Russia, Canada, England and any "white" country who are also here illegally will now be able to move to arizona since it's become a haven for any illegal if you don't "look the part".

Hope to see Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton out in the lead on this one.

It is unconscionable to allow subjective stops of anyone who looks like an illegal Mexican. That includes Central Americans, Cubans, South Americans, legal Mexicans, etc.

I understand the problem and get the sense of urgency,

But Arizona government does not have to be stupid.

So now if you aren't white, you will have to carry documents proving your citizenship.
Next you will have to wear an identifying badge – say a Star of David, for example – on your clothing.
Then the AZ Governor will mandate construction of a ghetto "for the immigrants' protection" – after a few dozen have been beaten to death by Tea Party thugs, who will by then be wearing brown shirts...
    why does this seem familiar?

The GOOD, immigrants will no longer put a strain on their economy, no more cheap labor and out of work americans can get the jobs lost to the cheap labor market. The BAD somebody is going to lose the breadwinner of the house. Children born in the US will lose parents who are illegal immigrants and people of hispanic desent will be pulled over more often. Because someone from Albania who may be an illegal doesn't fit the profile the cops are looking for.

If the federal government would effectively control our borders like they are supposed to do, then Arizona would not be forced to take these measures. It is very easy for people who are not directly impacted by the illegal immigration problem to criticize Arizona.
Maybe the federal government should spend less time on passing entitlement programs we can't afford and concentrate on real national security issues like border security.
