Arizona governor signs immigration bill

PHOENIX, Arizona (CNN) – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a state bill Friday that requires police to determine whether a person is in the United States legally, which critics say will foster racial profiling and discrimination but supporters say will crack down on illegal immigration.

The Republican governor also issued an executive order that would require additional training for local officers on how to implement the law without engaging in racial profiling.

"This training will include what does and does not constitute reasonable suspicion that a person is not legally present in the United States," Brewer said after signing the bill.

Previously, officers could check someone's immigration status only if that person was suspected in another crime.

mike – you do realize that Americans with brown skin can be systematically picked off the streets by cops, who have the control – so we better hope they're not bigots – with a demand to prove they're here legally? How do Americans prove they're American? Birth certificates apparently don't work.

So the state finally steps in to enforce the Federal law and BAM, look at all these people calling racism and comparing it to Hitler. Wow.

It's not the state of Arizona's fault that 90-95% of their illegal immigrant problem is from people crossing the U.S. Mexico boarder. They're victims of circumstance. It doesn't stop the fact that large amounts of issues come from the boarder (drugs, violence, trafficking) that makes them wanna crack down. A large minority that cross the boarder have criminal backgrounds themselves. Is it so wrong that they want to enforce what should already be enforces by the U.S. Government? I don't think so. However, this approach should have been culminated with other actions.

ATL Guy – I had to take in my passport, birth certificate, and proof of residency to get my driver's license. I'm not sure if the Arizona state regs are as strick, but it seems to me if I have to show all those to get my card, showing a valid (real) driver's license is pretty good proof (granted, not fool-proof).

Beverley – You're right. Instead of focusing on cutting down just on boarder crossing, they should focus a myriad of ways to cut the incentives of coming here for illegals. The problem is though, those jobs they work equal out to lower prices for you. Think of how much vegetable prices and poultry would be if they didn't hire below minimum wage "workers" to do that work?

This is going to be as ugly if not uglier than the health care debate. Hopefully we'll make it out in one piece.

I call on every well meaning American to never spend another penny in Arizona. This is the same as the Nazis requiring Jews to wear a yellow star. The People have lost their minds.

My question is how will they be able to pick out an illegal Mexican, Canadian, Chinese. Japanese, Briton, African or even Black American You see, for it not to be profiling all people that appear not to be Americans will have to be stopped and investigated. That in turn would cause one to pose the question: What does an American look like?

My response to that is the fact that the races of people listed above can all be natural born Americans so should they carry birth certificates with them at all times even though they are Americans.

This was a bad move for Arizona. I understand that something has to be done but this was not it.

I love the silly libs who don't live in the SW telling those citizens to rely on the Obama socialist pacifists in the WH and his Dem minions in Congress to protect all of them from gun runners, dope dealers, coyotes, illegals killing farmers who have respected them in the past! 72% of AZ voters approved of this bill. And btw, it will be going after Hispanics and other Latins who really are the largest group of illegals flowing across the entire SW because as Willie Sutton said, 'go to banks because that is where the money is,' just so because they are the criminals! E-Verify, profiling are both necessary to stop these criminals. Now if the East Coast mavens here posting like their crooks, their Mafia, their corruption of gangs on the E.Coast. Fine. But, SW citizens are going to protect themselves not waiting for Lefty wussies to protect legal American citizens.

Come on now!! what did you expect from a state that passed legislatioin now requiring presidential candidates to produce a "Birth Certificate to get on the ballot and refusing to beleive that the current POTUS is an American Citizen?

Watch out California because i'm certain that if another GOP Gov is elected particularly Meg Whitman this as with all other GOP Governed states within close proximity to Mexico such as TX, NV, FL, MS, AL TX) will follow suit!!

If this is not racial profiling, then technically every person in Arizona has to now carry proof of citizenship or legal status. That usually means a Valid Passport, Work Visa or birth certificate. I don't think a driver's license qualifies as proof of citizenship.

I thought republicans were against Big Government. Did AZ just step back to "1984" BIG SISTER IS WATCHING YOU!!

How is this Rascist. Everyone has to show a drivers license when pulled over. If a white guy does not have his license then the cop has to continue the process to figure out if he is legal or not. I am a jew and the idiot above who tried to equate this to Nazi Germany and the use of Jewish stars to identify people is totally offensive. We are deporting people if they are in the country illegally, not killing them. You idiot, stop embarrassing the rest of us jews with that talk and you should be ashamed by your trying to equate the two.

Stop worrying about the vote, do what even the europeans do, no visa, no legal citizenship? See ya

Arizona is currently under investigation for racial profiling of a black retired police detective, yes one of their own. A fellow police officer harrassed and threw him to the ground in front of his neighbors house that was on fire. The retired police detective advised that his neighbor was an invalid and was given the OK by the police chief to cross the yellow line when he was attacked by a fellow police officer and advised him he had the OK to do so. The police officer made racial overtures to the retired detective as he threw him to the ground. This is still under investigation as the Phoenix police department exhonerated the officer who committed this crime. The FBI has been called in on this case of racial profiling.

Just another step toward Nazi totalitarianism coming from our Republican pals. Look for the death threats for Latino politicians like Grijalva to keep on escalating, possibly to the point of violence.

Earth to Republicans: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Florida are all former Spanish colonies, and the families of many Latinos living there have been there longer than the hate-mongering Anglos with all their guns and threats of violence.

Why do Republicans so HATE AMERICA that they have to resort to this garbage? Do you all really want another civil war?

At last a state that has had enough. Every state in the Union should pass the same law. The illegals are a large part of the financial problems of the states and the fed.
50 million freeloaders taking food from American citizens children, jobs from working people, filling schools with students that can not understand english and stealing identities to avoid taxes.
    Time to send them home!
