Arizona governor signs immigration bill

PHOENIX, Arizona (CNN) – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a state bill Friday that requires police to determine whether a person is in the United States legally, which critics say will foster racial profiling and discrimination but supporters say will crack down on illegal immigration.

The Republican governor also issued an executive order that would require additional training for local officers on how to implement the law without engaging in racial profiling.

"This training will include what does and does not constitute reasonable suspicion that a person is not legally present in the United States," Brewer said after signing the bill.

Previously, officers could check someone's immigration status only if that person was suspected in another crime.

I am an immigrant -A LEGAL IMMIGRANT who paid and waited patiently to get to this country. My husband is still waiting his papers for 5 Years now because he has to wait for his number to become available to join his family here. maybe i should just tell him to go to Mexico and jump over the border!..We LEGAL immigrants see it as a slap in the face when we dont have as many "rights" as these illegals. WELL DONE ARIZONA...California should follow!...and its not even about been racist. I am BLACK, an IMMIGRANT and I support this bill to the fullest!

Thank Goodness!!!! Finally we are seeing Americans fed up with illegals breaking the law and encroching on American Soil. If you are legal there is no problem, it you are not, deportation.

This is a good start to a National Problem. More states and the US Goverment needs to get on board and enact similar legislation.

My wife has brown skin, not a US Citizen. She is a legal Res. and just filed to become a US Citizen. We have completed all the correct docs and done everything the correct way over the past 6 years. She is pleased with this new law. Bottom line if you have the docs and you are allowed to be in the US then you have nothing to worry about. Enter the US the correct way, file the correct docs, pay the correct fees. Its about time someone in the GOV. did something. My wife says GREAT JOB GOV. BREWER!!!!

Looks like law enforcement officers in Arizona are going to be busy.

There are going to be a lot of legal aliens who're going to get caught up in this law. Those are the ones who came through the front door, not the back door. They deserve our respect.

To those in our country illegally: You might consider going back to where you came from and save a lot of folks a lot of trouble.

"I love the silly libs who don't live in the SW telling those citizens to rely on the Obama socialist pacifists in the WH and his Dem minions in Congress to protect all of them from gun runners, dope dealers, coyotes, illegals killing farmers who have respected them in the past! "

Ummm..Your "Hero of Failure" Bush didn't do anything either there champ. You're one of those bright sparks that forget 2000-2008 even happened eh?

Solution, boycott this racist state. No vacations there, don't buy anything that comes from Arizona, unless it was made by a Native American. .I ask the AFL-CIO to consider a boycott ASAP. It's also a right to work for less state, as is the almost-as-bad-as-Arizona state I live in, Home of the Aryan and Tea Klux Klaners, Idaho

Most of you folks have never really had much exposure to the real world have you? To draw the simile to Nazi Germany is inane. The Jewish folks were there legally, they were citizens of their countries, they mostly wanted out of Germany controlled regions – Oh and by the way, they were not deported for their troubles, they were killed or sent to extermination camps. Perhaps we've gotten so "entitled" we deserve the consequences of being the most naive people on the planet.

Is there a lot of Canadian illegals in AZ? Asian illegals? Africans? Middle Easterners? Is it really racial profiling when you are asked to check peoples citizenship status, and yes more Latinos will be checked.

I still say we accept every legal or illegal if they want to work and send Mexico all our trash who live off entitlements the Democrats keeping handing out and I pay for... I'd say we pay for but most libs on here probably suck off the system too.

As a side note: Now Arizona will have a convenient way to solve their Homelesness problems – they'll just round 'em up, and anyone that doesnt have 'papers' will just conveniently get sent to Mexico.

Feels a lot like Germany in 1936, but at least they're not building camps... yet.

I am 55 years old Afro-American and I have been unfairly targeted/profiled by Police and without good cause too many times. I do know that there are Bad Apples in the Police Enforcement Agencies and that they do lie. I give credit to the Policemen who risk their lives to protect us and still can remain to be upstanding people with intigrity. My question is will this Bill apply to all illegals...even those who are not Hispanics and will the same rules apply if they happen to be of a European decent such as Russians...or cultures that have accents and dark skins? Will their rights be violated by the enforcement of this Bill?

Illegals immigrants should not be only people to have to prove they are here legally .. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander and I think ALL people should have to carry around with them their documentation .. Whether it be a Green card or US birth certificate

What a sad day for Arizona and America. Did you know the guy who created this bill is affiliated with a Nazi racist group?

I hope it includes white people and I will NEVER go to Arizona.

We are headed down a very dangerous road. This is no different than how the Nazis began in Germany, first they profiled. They decided what Jewish people looked like, and would stop them randomly on the streets. Hitler's excuse was also to protect Germany from foreigners and the Jews who he blamed for Germany's economic woes.

Careful America, when you allow fear and hate to dictate your laws!

    Who's next?

AZ should have put more pressure on the Fed to handle the immigration issue because it cannot just pick somebody up, process the person, and then send the person back to his/her country. That is a U. S. Federal Immigration issue.

Unless the Federal Immigration Service accept the illegal immigrants from the state, it (AZ) is going to pay for housing (cell) and feeding them.

I just wish the state of Arizona goodluck. The governor has set up her state for civil lawsuits. You have whites that look Spanish, you have Americans that are of Spanish origin, and these groups of people are going to exploit the environment, hoping they get arrested and inconvenienced. That gives them grounds to sue the state. While dealing with illegal immigration is essential to local security, the complexities of such law and how to enforce it should be weighed by the state of Arizona.. I will advise the state to set aside a large sum of money to settle lawsuits arising from its law enforcement officers overstepping on the rights of real, American citizens.

Those fighting this bill are the illegals currently living in Arizona. You dont see any Cubans or Peurto Ricans or blacks arguing against this bill. EWe support it. If you have papers to show you have a right to be here, just show the papers and move on. How is that racial profiling? Try living in a state like Arizona or California or Texas...you will see the destruction these illegals are causing...draining our systems and our resources.....

After watching the spectacle downtown of people carrying signs that say, "Abolish Bornders", I decided that Gov. Brewer is right. Someone needs to say, NO, you CAN NOT wreck the economy of an entire state because you believe that you are entitled to be here.

I saw some kid on the local news, who couldn't have been more than 13 years old who said that "Nobody should be excluded from America, and everyone should have rights". That 13 year old isn't smart enough to know that someone else will work for half the money he would accept as a sustainable living in 10 short years. Apparently, the adults aren't any smarter.

Go on Jan Brewer, and Good for Arizona!

This is a sad day for us in Arizona. Just when we were starting to get over the stigma of being the last state in the union to celebrate Martin Luther King day and that passed to ONLY attract a superbowl. This is what you get when you have a republican run state. This law is simply about politics. Just as the new Birther bill our legislature is trying to pass out here. If this new law and the birther law are so good for us in Arizona then I'm wondering why they didn't give us voters a chance to vote on the issues. What the media isn't talking about in this immigration law is that as an American citizen, if the police pull over someone I know to be here illegally and the officer doesn't ask for documentation than I as an American citizen can profit and file a lawsuit. My state is becomming a JOKE.. how sad..

So what does legal ID mean? These knuckle-dragging thugs dont even accept the President's 'Certificate of Live Birth'. They dont like the color of his skiin, either.

Good luck anyone caught in the open after dark. That's when the Arizona Posse starts rounding up the people in the ghetto.

Wonder if they'll make them wear armbands, or just send them straight to the camps?

I LOVE Arizona-–Arizona rocks!!! Show your support for Arizona and he rule of law--plan your next vacation in Arizona!!!

The Bill was supported by 70% of Arizona citizens-–it is the Democrats who are not going to have a political career in Arizona.

And, for any Democratic politician who tries to shove amnesty down our throats-–they will be placing the final nail in the coffins of their poliical careers---as the MAJORITY in the country do NOT want illegals rewarded/accommodated in any way-–the MAJORITY wants illegals arrested/deported.
