(CNN) – Democrats were gleeful in 2004 when former Vice President Dick Cheney on the Senate floor told a senior lawmaker to "f**k" himself – a gesture, they thought, that was emblematic of Cheney's hard-heartedness.
Six years later, Cheney is looking back on that moment with pride.
"You'd be surprised how many people liked that," Cheney told conservative comedian and radio host Dennis Miller Thursday. "That's sort of the best thing I ever did."
Audio of the comments were posted on the liberal Web site Think Progress.
Cheney aimed the choice words at Sen. Patrick Leahy, now the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, in June 2004. Cheney was upset with Leahy's criticism of Iraq contracting deals that the Bush administration had awarded to Halliburton, the company Cheney used to head.
Senate rules prohibit senators from using "unbecoming" language on the Senate floor when the body is in session, but makes no mention of whether the vice president is permitted to make foul remarks.
Its pretty sad that he believes that's "the best thing [he] ever did."
The really sad thing is, that after over 30 years of being in politics, Dick Cheney's comment to Senator Leahy IS the best thing he ever did.
Conservatives like the former VP set their sights soooo low these days.
Prettty proud of himself, isn't he? And you've heard about that one daughter of his, haven't you? How bout it, bobble thumpers? Is this the kind of guy can can get behind?
I have to agree with the Dick – that was the best thing he ever did.
If there was any person alive to have that comment directed to him, it was Sen. Leaky Leakhy....and i echo that comment louder.
When Biden used the f.........word all the
libs out there thought is was cool.
Let's see the tone of your comments about
a Republican using it.
I think the word HYPOCRITICAL will apply.
Patrick Leahy is a disgusting excuse for a human being.
Yup, Republicans–the party of family values and family talk.
I actually agree with him!
It IS the best thing he ever did. Which sure isn't saying much now is it?
Now about that list of of the WORST things he ever did...
Ah yes, Cheney, the PRINCE OF DARKNESS! How we have missed you. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, "SCREW THEE!"
He did exactly what everyone here in Vermont wants to do.
Ol' Patric need to get the boot, dumb irish mick
he has done nothing for me.........and never will
Vote him out Vermont!!!!!
"Darth Vader" Cheney says it was sort of the best thing he's ever done. Sure would have been nice if he had done nothing more. At least our nation would not be in the mess we are in now behind his and W's "Bull".
It's beyond pathetic, however possibly ironically truthful (considering the source) that cussing somebody out on the Senate floor was "the best thing he ever did".
You were Vice-President of what used to be the most powerful country in the world before you decimated it, and you consider the use of profanity towards a senator your crowning achievement? Pathetic piece of manure.
Yes, remember that clearly. How crass to say that to a Senator who just happens to be criticizing the fact that the company of which you were a former CEO is getting contracts to supply the War in Iraq from the U.S.A. No "conflict of interest" there, huh, Cheney?
V.P. Biden's remark was made in a much lighter tone, to say the least. I guess that word can have a positive or negative connotation, depending on the context. But somehow, it would always be "negative" coming from Cheney. The man is just plain evil.
That was an example of whom the real Dick is! Amazing that Conservative Christians could vote for this guy.
If only you had run in 2008 Dick we wouldn't have the mess we've got right now.
Why don't you do the world a favor and die you rotten bastard?
so this is where Joe picked it up
It is no wonder with actions like Big Dick's here that there is no civility in Washington. Have a fatal heart attack already, Dick and put yourself our of all of our misery.
The best thing you ever did was to use the foulest of language in the hallowed halls of the United States Senate because a hightly respected lawmaker did not agree with you? And you were the Vice President of the United States at the time?
Wow. I'm glad you finally had the courage to admit it Mr. Cheney. And I couldn't agree with you more. A proud moment indeed! As I mother and grandmother myself I'm glad your mama did live to hear you say that out loud in public!!
It's good to hear Dick Cheney admit that the best thing he ever did was tell someone to go F themselves. It's been obvious to the rest of us ever since he uttered the remark.
It probably is the best thing Cheney ever did – which says a great deal about how crude a man he was and how few his actual accomplishments.
I do agree with Mr. Cheney – that vile, sophomoric little outburst was the best thing he's ever done...
In the words of Billy Joel "only the good die young" which can only explain why this hate-monger greedy war criminal is still around. Now, why anyone would listen to him – well, that remains a mystery...
Just some insight into Cheney's character. Or lack thereof.
