Granholm worries of Tea Party's 'fringe element'

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm says a 'fringe element' is using the Tea Party to transmit views.
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm says a 'fringe element' is using the Tea Party to transmit views.

(CNN) – Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm says a “fringe element” is using the Tea Party to transmit views that are unacceptable in the national political debate.

“There is a fringe element …that I think uses the Tea Party as a way to push into the mainstream - what are really and have been fringe sentiments,” Granholm, a Democrat, told CNN’s Candy Crowley in an interview airing Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union.

Granholm added she feels much of the grass-roots movement is “mainstream,” but said it also serves to “amplif[y] a voice that would previously have been unacceptable, I think, in most [of the] mainstream.”

Granholm, a two-term governor who will leave office in January, is reported to be on President Obama’s short list for the Supreme Court.

Candy Crowley’s full interview with Granholm airs Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union at 9 a.m. ET.

The Governor is just using the typical far left ploy of demeaning, and marginalizing anyone who doesn't buy into the far left Obama agenda. The next step is calling them racists. There are always comments that "all you see are white faces". Since 95% of the black people voted for Obama, that doesn't leave a lot to attend the Tea Parties, but you will find some there.

    THE TALE OF TWO GOVERNORS

    – Michigan Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm is set to complete her 8-year commitment to the 10-million people of 8th largest state in the Union. She is a Harvard Graduate of Law, served as the Michigan U.S. Attorney, and is also suspected of being a finalist for U.S. Supreme Court appointment. Job well done Jennifer. :-)

    – Former Alaska Republican Governor Sarah Palin quit her state leadership post of 698,000 people after brief 2-years. The potential money to be made with V.P. Candidate name recognition was too great an allure for Sarah. So Sarah dropped her commitment to one of the smallest states in the Union (48th) to make divisive lying speeches that ignorant hillbillies would gladly pay to hear without regard for true and factual accuracy. Shame on you Sarah :-(

Just last year, the organizer of a "Tea Party" protest in Virginia planed to burn House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Tom Perriello in effigy next weekend at a rally.

Now that's irrational: is he out of rational arguments? Can't convince anyone that his position is correct? Just what is accomplished except driving moderate Americans away. I've seen the signs: I've heard the heated, nasty rhetoric... so no. I will not be attending any tea-pot parties anytime soon.

Hey, Granholm! accuses the White House and Congress of being "liberal fringe elemente transmitting views" that are "unacceptable under the U.S. Constitution."

Name one ... And while you're at it, explain why the democratically-elected President and Democratic Party majorities are a "liberal fringe element."

That is, if you can think for yourself and not just parrot what you hear on Fox and Limbaugh ...

    Define "fringe sentiment."

A lot of Democrats seem to define "fringe" as anything other than the Democratic Party platform. They define as "fringe" anyone who says out loud that the federal government really ought to abide by the Constitution that created it.

The far left has benifited from Free Speech in this contry for the last 100 years. Now when they have infiltrated the mainstream Democratic Party, anyone who doesn't agree with them must be silenced.

Vote Independent or Republican this November and purge our government of these whiny leftist control freeks !

Gov. Granholm should know about the militant fringe being the Gov. of Michigan. Fringe groups in America have always existed, but since the relaxation of the gun laws, more people have access to guns and add that to angry people and that spells trouble. Lots of folks use angry speech and that is what it is, but some use the language of words with action and that could mean trouble. But, I guarantee you if something terrible should happen in the future, there will be mountains of denials of responsibility for using inflamatory words to incite the violence. Marlene in Mich

Where is she when Code pink disrupts political events with their fringe belief? Where was she When Cindy Sheehan was being shamlessly used by the left wing and was camping out near G. W. Bush's house?

This is a dumb argument and even the true liberals know it. The FRINGE left has caused more problems and violence than anyone.

Wow, I'm amazed anyone can find anything debatable about what Granholm said. The GOPbaggers do contain a higher than average number of extremists, racists and low-information (non)thinkers. Racist signs should be considered unacceptable in today's political debates.

@Marie MD: "Obama = trying to bring people together"

You have got to be kidding. Obama is fanning the flames of class warfare–the 53% who actually pay federal income tax vs. the 47% freeloaders, the self-reliant vs. the shiftless bums–as hard as he can fan them. The country is more divided now, with members of Congress getting death threats, than I've ever seen before–and I well remember the 60s.
