Obama was top recipient of BP-related dollars in 2008

Washington (CNN) - As petroleum giant BP comes under congressional scrutiny as its ruptured oil rig pumps thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, its political contributions are being scrutinized, too.

The top recipient of BP-related donations during the 2008 presidential election was Barack Obama, who collected $71,000, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

When questioned about the donations Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs made a point of noting that the money came from employees and not the company itself.

White House spokesman Ben LaBolt added that Obama wasn't tied to big oil companies.

People get use to it, with the ruling the conservative SCOTUS gave corporations will be able to give unlimited monies to campaign's not just employee's of these companies. So it will be legal for every company to own a United States Senator.

Oh MY!! I guess Obama is in the back pocket of big oil!!!!!! Maybe explains why gasoline prices are over $3/gallon.

The libtards liked to pin rising gasoline prices on George Bush so the rising prices must now be Obama's fault!!!

that's it $71,000. I would make BP pay dearly for being so cheap!

Does anyone seriously think $71,000 is going to sway opinion out of the millions in campaign cash Obama got?

I have to list my employer when I make a donation to any campaign, and, trust me, my employer and I don't always agree on policital issues.

Pres. Obama received a lot of small donations from a lot of employed people, so naturally, you could go down the line and say, " Pres. Obama was the top recipient of Walgreen, Target, University of (pick a state), Geico, etc... related dollars".

Wow thats a real shocker. Obama ever acting the populist takes in the most from BP and a shocking amount from Goldman Sachs. His hypocrisy is amazing and the fact that people seem to overlook it is even worse. At least there is one good thing out of all this and that is Obama is not afraid to bite the hand that feeds him. Funny but not surprising.

So I guess this disaster is now all Obamas fault ? Kind of a paltry amount to be concerned about in the first place. What did Haliburton give to Cheney ,50 million in kickbacks for the starting the Iraq war ?

It's almost funny how this is a Hannity Headline–Obama campaign donations are historic in that it came from the common people. Besides, BP was the employees part-time job. There full time job is being a concern, politically involved, American citizen.
So the headline should read Obama was top recipient of American citizens related dollars in 2008

FYI: BP also reports since 1990 they contributed $5 million in campaign contributions, so who got the other $4,929,000 prior to 2008?

...and the problem is???? If he was a big recipient of $ from this company and a Republican, he'd be covering for them and retaining the current cap on their liability. Since he is going after them to pony up, it's clear that he is not beholden to them...a good thing.

Hmm. If we were talking about George Bush, the narrative would be something along the lines of GB being in the pockets of big oil. So does this mean that the bamster (Obama) is in the pockets of big oil since he wanted more off shore exploration and received money from the evil oil companies? What happened to Hope and Change? Liberals, what say you?

So??????? As if he is the only politician to receive money from big corporations, whichever they are.
The oil rig should have been built with the extra features. It didn't happen under the Obama administration.

So are we suppose to think BP employees must be totally miffed to see the candidate they donated to, blame their company for the oil spill. Like they weren't able to buy his support?

I'm going to take a wild guess. BP employees "know" it's their company's fault. Not the employees' fault, but the company's fault.

There's no wrong doing going on here.

Let's hear the GOP spin on this one.

  22. Sniffit

    Sooooo, which is it GOPers?

    A. Obama is a BP puppet who will let this oil rig disaster slide by without a thorough investigation or holding BP accountable for the costs and damage;

    B. Obama planned the oil rig disaster, hiring left wing radical hippy environmentalists to use their hippy nature powers to call the dolphins to bring them out to the oil rig so they could blow it up and Obama could take advantage of a crisis and reneg on his stated off shore drilling policies...eventually banning it completely; OR

    C. Depends on which one is convenient to claim at the time and/or which one we heard Limbaugh say last.
