Washington (CNN) – A bipartisan group of legislators on Thursday introduced legislation in Congress to strip citizenship from any American found to be involved in terrorism.

If the Terrorist Expatriation Act passes, an American could lose citizenship if the State Department found that person had provided material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization - as designated by the secretary of state - or participated in actions against the United States.

Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Connecticut, and Scott Brown, R-Massachusetts, co-sponsored the bill. An identical bill is being introduced in the House by Reps. Jason Altmire, D-Pennsylvania, and Charlie Dent, R-Pennsylvania.

"As the attempted terrorist attack on Times Square showed us again, our enemies today are even more willing than the Nazis or fascists were to kill innocent civilian Americans," Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, told reporters. "Our enemies today are stateless actors who don't wear uniforms and plot against Americans abroad and here in the United States."

SO HAND IN YOUR US PASSPORT LIEBERMAN.
You are a terrorist-shill with an agenda of 'Israel first and last'and you are a lily-livered coward.
You should be escorted to Tel Aviv,do not pass 'GO', and ALL your US assets, bribes, kickbacks from Israeli foreign political organisations like AIPAC etc will be FROZEN,then donated to the terrorised civilians in Gaza. Again No US citizen rights for Zionist traitors. Round them up, lock them, throw away the key. They are a lot easier to find and identify than terrorists, anyway. I even know one named "Lieberman".

This is a terrible idea, typical of politicians who play to public fears. Have you no faith in American justice? Innocent until proven guilty? Is this what the Founding Fathers fought for? Shame, shame.

And to think we've been inundated for the past two years about how Obama will take away our rights, when all along it's Republicans, starting with Bush's Patriot Act, illegal spying, and torture, who want to dent people their rights. And just where is the uproar from the Tea Party Patriots? From Palin, who spouts off daily about freedom? Where are you people now that YOUR party is stripping citizens of their rights? I'm waiting.

"...our enemies today are even more willing than the Nazis or fascists were to kill innocent civilian Americans..."

So the German army marching through Europe fighting the Allied army or the slaughter of untold numbers of jews in concentrations camps rate nothing compared to a deluded amateur leaving a car-bomb in times square?

Get a grip and put things in perspective, people! These politicians are falling over each other for the opportunity to capitalize on the sound-bite-du-jour.

Last time I read a history book, the Nazis weren't killing American citizens..they were killing German Jewish ones. Isn't Lieberman a Jew?

Lieberman, you are a bad Jew. I can't believe you just compared the times square terrorist to the Nazis. Why won't you go away. Your cartoon was canceled a long time ago.

This is really not a good bill.

To give some lower level State Department flunky that power, based on his or her feelings or whims, is just plain wrong.

I would agree with a bill that would strip an American of his or her citizenship if he or she were CONVICTED of being a terrorist or aiding and abetting terrorists.

Where is the due process? What are the checks and balances?

I love stupid bills like this. Only arrogant people can support them because they intrinsically assume no error on the part of the accusers.

I've got an even better idea. Let's just let the government be able to strip citizenship from anyone it doesn't like. I'm sure that will make our country even stronger than it already is.

As long as the US allows Israel to run a partied and to treat the Palestinian people like slaves, we can expect retaliation from the Arab world.

    More details needed CNN.

Is this after due process, (i.e. the person is found guilty in a court of law) or only upon being suspected (guilty by association without due process). If it is the latter then Joe must have forgotten the history of the Jews in Germany. Laws that allowed the government to strip German citizens of their citizenship based solely on the ethnicity of their grandparents were used against Jews to designate them as non-Germans. Would he now have the US government, absent due-process, strip American citizens of their citizenship based only on their associations? Is the former victim of facism becoming a facist?

Why don't these fools worry about something imortant instead of trying to score political points.Do we care if hes a citizen when he gets sentenced to life in prison. Does it make a difference in American life? Congress is a total waste of time and money.

So does this mean the Hutaree Christian militia people from Michigan will be stripped of their US citizenship?

They were plotting to kill local law enforcement officers, with the plan to kill more at the subsequent funeral(s). Sounds like terrorist activities to me ...

    Blatantly unconstitutional. Lieberman is disgusting.

Since Lieberman is an Agent of Israel, he would be one of the first to lose American citizenship, and should lose it anyway for trying to introduce this legislative abommination.

Exile Lieberman back to Tel Aviv where his loyalties lie.

Okay, we strip them of their citizenship. Who will want them (of course, other terrorists). If they are not citizens we can deport them - then they are just trouble. So why not just jail them forever?

I think we should strip Lieberman of HIS citizenship and ship him to Israel where he belongs.
