Sanford reunites with Argentine mistress

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said Wednesday that he spent the weekend with his former mistress.
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said Wednesday that he spent the weekend with his former mistress.

Washington (CNN) – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford confirmed Wednesday that he spent last weekend trying to rekindle a relationship with an Argentine woman he once called his "soul mate."

"As a matter of record, everybody in this room knows exactly who I was with over the weekend," Sanford told reporters during a press conference. "That is no mystery to anybody given what I said last summer. And you know the purpose was obviously to see if something could be restarted on that front, given the rather enormous geographic gulf between us, and time will tell, I don't know if it will or it won't."

The rendezvous was originally reported by the website Gawker after tipsters spotted Sanford and a tall brunette in the Florida Keys.

South Carolina's Attorney General decided last week that the Republican governor will not face criminal charges following an investigation into his travel and campaign expenses, a probe that started after media organizations began examining the governor's financial practices following his disclosure of the extramarital affair last June.

At Wednesday's press conference, Sanford pushed back against continued interest in his personal life, saying "[W]hat I do know is this, the obsession with one's personal life needs to come to an end."

Sanford, who is not running for re-election in November, had been considered a possible 2012 Republican presidential contender before he admitted his affair in a nationally televised statement.

In February, a judge granted a divorce to Sanford's wife, Jenny, who separated from her husband last summer.

We the people have every right to know our representatives! How can I trust a person who loses the trust of his own family? Public service is exactly that... public!

This is the guy who was calling for Clinton's head. Now he wants privacy in his personal life. Ha!

I love a good love story.

Maybe she can find him a job in Argentina after he's voted out of office.

His ex-wife has stated she is dating again and she divorced him because she knew he wasn't in love with her anymore. If he and his Argentina mistress are in love, good for them, spread it around.

Oh yeah, a "family values man" who went after Bill Clinton. Now look who has joined the ranks of GOP hypocrites?!

Ordinarily, I'd be in the "who cares? It's personal" camp, but the hypocrisy displayed by this man now that it's his personal life on display is astounding. Where was his concern for privacy during the Clinton impeachment trial?

That's not what Ken Starr or Newt Gingrich thought....

Suck it up Sanford. You did the crime, now you get to do the time. Enjoy it.

Sanford is a complete jerk. Someone who shows this total lack of judgment and responsibility in his job has no business as governor of a state, especially SC, that is poor, full of racist politicians, and where blacks are still kept in their place.

Sanford should have been removed from office and Senator Jim "Waterloo" DeMint needs to be soundly defeated in Nov. He is a complete Republican purist – liar, racist, and do-nothing. The large black populationin SC should make sure this fool never returns to Congress.

  16. Principle not Ideology

All I can say is that this guy's a fool. He needs to lay low until his term ends or he needs to resign. That's way too much distraction for him and his estranged family.
I have been looking for a man who stand on principle and I can't find him.

Sanford is a liar, unethical, guilty of fraud, a neglegent parent, but... he writes poetic love notes. I hope he finds true happiness with his Argentine mistress - in Argentina, and stays there for the rest of his life.

That he hasn't been forced from his Governor position says a lot more about the corrupt and hypocritical South Carolina Republicans than it does about Sanford.

However, this is the same guy who voted to imprach President Clinton and wanted him to resign from office for his affair. I guess there are two different standards for this GOP "Hypercritic".

I cant help but laugh. he didn't get into any trouble, his wife is through with him, of course he's going back to his Latino lover. Of course I'm absolutely shocked that Republicans still aren't raising questions about this man's patriotism. after all, if you are going to have a mistress, you should at least go American. Does this man not know how many American women are suffering because he has outsourced is affair to Argentina?

Republican Bible thumpers seem to have a problem condemning immoral behaviour by republican "family values" (other republican Bible thumpers) people. Are they hypocrites or what?

"[W]hat I do know is this, the obsession with one's personal life needs to come to an end." ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Maybe if he hadn't declared in front of God and everyone and on television that this woman is his "soulmate" and sharing WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION, it might have already ended.

a public servant, as in elected official, doesn't HAVE a personal, as in private, life... especially when he was skanking around when he was married and on the public's time.
