Sanford reunites with Argentine mistress

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said Wednesday that he spent the weekend with his former mistress.
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said Wednesday that he spent the weekend with his former mistress.

Washington (CNN) – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford confirmed Wednesday that he spent last weekend trying to rekindle a relationship with an Argentine woman he once called his "soul mate."

"As a matter of record, everybody in this room knows exactly who I was with over the weekend," Sanford told reporters during a press conference. "That is no mystery to anybody given what I said last summer. And you know the purpose was obviously to see if something could be restarted on that front, given the rather enormous geographic gulf between us, and time will tell, I don't know if it will or it won't."

The rendezvous was originally reported by the website Gawker after tipsters spotted Sanford and a tall brunette in the Florida Keys.

South Carolina's Attorney General decided last week that the Republican governor will not face criminal charges following an investigation into his travel and campaign expenses, a probe that started after media organizations began examining the governor's financial practices following his disclosure of the extramarital affair last June.

At Wednesday's press conference, Sanford pushed back against continued interest in his personal life, saying "[W]hat I do know is this, the obsession with one's personal life needs to come to an end."

Sanford, who is not running for re-election in November, had been considered a possible 2012 Republican presidential contender before he admitted his affair in a nationally televised statement.

In February, a judge granted a divorce to Sanford's wife, Jenny, who separated from her husband last summer.

I love to hate this man, but what does who he sleeps with have to do with his office? After all the same people who elected him into office failed to get him off when he failed his party's family value, rather, let him ride till the end.
He is a player for a man and political player.
    Give him some love.

The man is doing his Job. What's any one's business with his personal life. His wife knew all along , it wasn't like he cheated. He loves this woman. so what's the problem. He needs to run for president of the United States (After Obama leaves in 2016). I like him he did not deny anything he came straight forward

This is typical of Sanford and the west coast. You'd never see this kind of thing from Harvard.

Just watch – all the family-values conservatives will give him extra credit for waiting until after Jenny's divorce request was finalized. What a fine, upstanding Christian man.

Awww...how cute them republicans are. It's all about the family....well, someone else family because they can't live up to their own expectations of course.

Just proves what republicans have a priority on, extra marital affairs.

I wonder if their 'nights of love' will be just as magical now as they were when he was lying to his constitutes about where we was over Father's Day, cheating on his then wife and still children, and stealing from his own state as he did when he using the state vehicles, phones, etc.

Good for you Jenny Sanford – for divorcing this despicable piece of republican hypocrisy.

Oh and my prediction – the Argentina mistress will break up with him soon – she was only it in for personal gain anyway.

Read between the lines – "he was TRYING to rekindle a relationship'....I imagine that relationship is just about dead.

    Typical republican dog.

Do we really need to hear more about this hypocrite's tryst? He is a total embarrassment to his party, the state, his family and the country. Could he at least have the decency to wait until his term is up. Oh, that's right, Guillani and Ginrich did the same thing! Must be in the water.

These are the same words from a man who voted to impeach Bill Clinton for doing the same thing he did and doesn't believe that gay couples should have the same right to marriage that he has and reneged upon.

Mark Sanford, like so many republicans is nothing but a "do as I say, not as I do" lying, cheating, self-serving hypocrite.

    South Carolinians should be ashamed.

    Hey Frank U...

While I agree with you...you might want to get a map.

South Carolina, the state that Sanford is the governor of, is on the EAST COAST of the United States.

Mark Sanford is the REPUBLICAN poster boy. A weepy eyed wimp who falls for some tart while proclaiming values.

What about those C-Street boys? Maybe, good ole Sen. Coburn can be his Deacon too. He can tell Sanford to just pay off his mistress- that's the right thing for a religious man to do.

Sanford was decrying Bill Clinton's little tryst. Now Sanford, all teary eyed over that tart from South America, is the one pursuing his middle age crisis.

Does he really think that women from South America cares about him??? She's just interested in his money.

This is pathetic. I would normally not care because these things do happen in life, however he has continued to publically demonstrate extraordinarly poor judgement throughout this entire escapade so that I believe people need to seriously question his mental capability for holding office.

you are so wrong! A long as he's having an affair with a woman, they seem to have no problem. If you're unlucky say like Larry Craig, they will eat their own. Maybe no one has been out front backing him, but no one is condeming him & calling for his resignation in the republican party either. Most republicans will defend the behavoir of their own unless it has a hint of homosexuality. You're also dead wrong about liberals or democrats having no morals. I am really getting sick & tired of that blatant bull crap!! Democrats & liberals are not as hypocritical as conservatives & are every bit as moral as republicans. Yes there are some that have done immoral acts & they have been widely ridiculed & in some cases shunned. Show me one example of that happening to a republican when it involved an opposite male female relationship.

I'm trying to do the same exact thing.

If a Marriage is dead end why the heck can a mann go about his business?

Who says that he has to stick around in missery other than the Church and we all know how things end up especially when it comes to forced celibacy.
