Hawaii can ignore repeated requests for pres. birth certificate

Washington (CNN) - Hawaii would like for so-called "birthers" to stop asking to see President Obama's birth certificate.

The state passed a law on Wednesday that allows state agencies to ignore repeated requests to view government records, including the president's birth document. Hawaii's Republican Gov. Linda Lingle signed the legislation into law.

This will impact requests from a fringe movement dubbed the "birthers." Adherents question President Obama's constitutional eligibility to be commander-in-chief, suggesting he was not born in the United States despite proof that he was born in Hawaii in 1961. CNN and other news organizations have thoroughly debunked the rumors about the president's birthplace.

Hawaii has released a copy of the president’s birth certificate – officially called a “certificate of live birth” – and the hospital took out ads in two Hawaiian newspapers announcing the 1961 birth.

But adherents to the “birther” theories persist. Army surgeon Lt. Col. Terry Lakin subscribes to the “birther” theory and faces a court martial for refusing to deploy to Afghanistan unless the president shows his birth certificate. He disputes that the Hawaii birth certificate is real.

“I believe we need truth on this matter,” he said in an interview earlier this week on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360.

In recent testimony to a state senate panel considering the new law, Hawaii Director of Health Chiyome L. Fukino said her office receives about 50 emails a month requesting access to the president's birth certificate.

Fukino cited a small group of individuals "who engage in a pattern of repeated requests" in a transcript of her testimony provided to CNN. "We believe having to respond repeatedly to essentially the same request or a variation of the request all centering on whether or not President Obama was born in Hawaii is a frivolous use of department time and resources."

And in a recent WABC interview before she signed the bill, Hawaii's Republican governor said the birth certificate issue “is simply a distraction from the more critical issues that are facing the country.”

“And so I had my health director, who is a physician by background, go personally view the birth certificate in the birth records of the Department of Health,” Lingle said. “ … The president was in fact born at Kapi'olani Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. And that's just a fact. And yet people continue to call up and email and want to make it an issue. And I think it's, again, a horrible distraction for the country by those people who continue this."

"It's been established he was born here,” the governor added. “I can understand why people want to make certain that the constitutional requirement of being a, you know, natural born American citizen … but the question has been asked and answered. And I think just we should all move on now."

Just because these birthers are unwilling to accept President Obama's birth certificate as real doesn't mean it's not.

These birthers need to get a life, grow up, accept that there's a Black man in the White House and get over the FACT that their candidate LOST!

IF we need the State legislature to give us permission to ignore the frantic, deluded claims of the pathetic 'birther' movement, then we are doomed as a society.

These ridiculous claims have been refuted, re-refuted, and proved baseless time and again, yet some people cling to whatever supports their ignorant, suspicious, even paranoid point of view. Any sane person should simply ignore them.

Do we also need a law to tell us we can ignore the guy on the street corner wearing a tinfoil hat and telling anyone who will listen about how he was abducted by aliens and how the government is covering it all up, and we better watch out for the black helocopters? Jeez people – wake up!

This really deserves a headline, CNN. Those lunatics out there that will thrive on making ridiculous statements, claims, need to be ignored, nor urged on or supported.
But of course, you insist on headlining anything that brings any doubt, no matter how unfounded, on our president.
Has CNN signed a contract with Fox yet? With your bias think they would want you as a partner.

A DISGRACE TO THE UNIFORM. TREASONOUS. Can you imagine the mayhem in the ranks if every soldier found some outlandish reason to question their orders. If this guy is a surgeon, did we the taxpayers pay for his medical training? I'm guessing its the very people who despise the government who are continually calling to utilize the precious time and resources of dutiful public servants. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Notice to all the paranoid conspiracy-theorists out there: Wanting something to not be true doesnt make it untrue. No matter how much you WANT the president to be born in Kenya, Indonesia, Pakistan, or Mars – it doesnt change history. You can WISH with all your hearts till your tinfoil hats heat up and cook your brain – but there is still a black man in the Oval Office, he DID win the election, and he IS the President. You're welcome to come join the democratic process, just grab a little REALITY on your way in.

I can understand Orly Taits being an idiot, but this goes to show that we have army officers that are not too bright either. Now that is a surprise.

These Birthers are 7 different kinds of crazy!!! These are also the people that get on TV and say that President Obama's name is in the bible and it is said he is the Anti Christ. And still people continue to follow the Tea Party and still the press continues to give them credence by reporting about them. Jesus Christ himself could come down and say that Obama was born in Hawaii and they still would say he was born in Kenya because this is about nothing more than Racism.

The nut cakes won't ever stop. The bare truth is a combination of sour grapes (their guy lost) and I believe a racial aspect well, if they want to admit it or not. The rest America sees through these right wing nut cases for what they really are. Maybe if the press would stop giving them the time of day they would go away.

There is no doubt that people that refuse to accept the legal birth certificate provided by the state of Hawaii are simply unable to accept that a man with brown skin is the president. I've heard people say they want to see the "original" birth certificate, that the doc provided by Hawaii is not good enough. Nothing will ever be good enough for people that are so desperate to remove Obama from office.
Obama's mother was an American citizen. That makes him a natural born citizen regardless of where he was born.

Uuuggghhh, these people are just idiots. What a waste of tax payers money. Unfortunately Winston Churchill put it best "a fanatic is one who can not change his mind and will not change the subject".

Just a bunch of crazy fanatics that us normal Americans have to put up with. Probably best that we just ignore them, rather than give credence to their cause.

When will the brain-dead, ignorant "birthers" get it through their thick heads? Give it up already! How many times does Obama's certificate of live birth have to be posted?

Lt. Col. Terry Lakin is just looking to get out of his deployment and is a disgrace to the uniform, a traitor, and should face court martial.

How sad that it has to come to this - a government having to waste time and money passing a law to keep the idiots at bay. You'd think all those fiscal conservatives out there would be blasting the birther movement for wasting government money, but apparently that would be too much like consistency.

Actually, the " birthers" are just trying to take a shortcut to solving one of the most critical issues facing this country. I say we wait until 2012 and vote him out, but people are impatient. It's pretty much too late anyway. They spent all they could borrow and then already raised the limit so they can borrow more.

President Obama could give a certified copy to everyone of the birther idiots and it wouldn't matter. There hatred has NOTHING to do with where he was born. It's just something to howl about.

I am so proud of President Obama. He has taken on the hardest challenge EVER faced by a President and has done well. All the Republicans can do is sit back and complain and make up lies. It's disgusting to watch them in action. People need to realize they are being played by all of this fake "grassroot' crap. Billboards by "small business owers" HA! It's all paid for with corporate money. WAKE UP!
