Obama rips stimulus opponents during Ohio visit

The president said Tuesday that his administration's economic stimulus package was 'the right thing to do.'

Youngstown, Ohio (CNN) - President Barack Obama took his economic recovery message on the road Tuesday, heading to the heart of the Rust Belt to defend his administration's controversial stimulus plan and take credit for reversing the recent downturn.

The president tore into the plan's opponents, attacking them for what he claimed is political hypocrisy and a defense of failed policies.

He made his remarks during a visit to an Ohio plant that manufactures steel pipes for the oil and gas industry. In February, the Vallourec and Mannesmann Star factory used funds from the $862 billion stimulus package to add more than 300 jobs.

The package - strongly criticized by Republicans for failing to more dramatically lower near double-digit unemployment - was "the right thing to do," Obama said.

"Now, we've got a long way to go ... but despite that sobering reality, and despite the naysayers in Washington, who look for the cloud around every silver lining; the fact is that our economy is growing again."

The economy grew in the first three months of this year but at a much slower pace than at the end of 2009, according to a government report released in April. Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the nation's economic activity, rose at a 3.2 percent annual rate in the quarter, the Commerce Department noted.

The president accused critics of his economic agenda of "rooting for failure." He also mocked them "trying to score political points by attacking what we did," only to "show up," "cut the ribbons," and "send the mailings home touting the very projects they opposed."

"If the just-say-no crowd had won out ... we'd be in a deeper world of hurt," he warned.

Obama also recently visited Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and New York to tout the improving economy and improved jobs numbers.

Obama "this stimulus will allow us not to go over 8% unemployment"
*Well, it went past 10 and is now 9.8. You porkulus bill fattened the wallets of your friends and put Americans in more debt.

This is what you call good? Obama needs to resign.

...and another thing: the same goes for A LOT of DEMOCRAPS currently in office. You are just as useless as the Republicans, and maybe worse because you lack the courage of your convictions.

You go around acting so scared and punkish you make me think you ere NEVER in a schoolyard fight. Go out there and get your butt whupped! Stand up for something! Do it for your country and the people you're supposed to serve.

Does anyone ask themselves what our country should look to Barack Obama?
It's pretty clear that it's the polar opposite of the what the constituion and founders wanted.

I'm so disappointed about what a lying fraud this guy is. This country will be tainted for decades because of this left-wing corrupt pig.

Does this slimy, corrupt idiot ever make any statement that is positive and doesn't tear the nation further apart. Wow, what a leader the democrats stole the election for. An uninspiring, lying, corrupt toadie to his party and the unions. Never a positive message unless he is telling the dope smokers that he is going to steal more money from the hard working people of America, so they can continue to lie on their couches and watch Oprah.

The only jobs "saved or created" were state government and union teaching jobs. Now that the gravy train is over, the states still don't have the money to pay the people and will be forced to cut jobs. So in the long run, all this "stimulus" money was a complete and total WASTE.

We are left with a TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT BILL TO CHINA and unemployment that continues to climb. Odummie and DemocRATS have NO CLUE how to create REAL PRIVATE SECTOR JOBS. All they know is the smoke and mirrors of creating government jobs, aka OVERHEAD. But what did you expect from an inexperienced community organizer that never ran a business and got money from government grants.

While not knowing what he is talking about, he is still campaigning against people opposing his ideas. Interesting, and very revealing! Why not talking about things you understand Mr. president!? AH, there may not be such things after all.....

More propaganda from the people who brought you "change" ... The only thing the stimulus package stimulated was politicians' egos - the biggest one belonging to Obama.

Wake up people! In 2010, vote American, vote Republican!

    People have such short memories.

As bad as the economy is now, we certainly aren't in another "Great Depression," which was the general consensus of where we were headed before Obama took office.

The President has made some mistakes, and perhaps he could have done better. However, I do think he helped stabilize the system and prevent a worldwide economic meltdown. He deserves more credit.

    Thank you President Obama!

Expose the hypocrisy of Pawlenty of Minnesota, Sanford of
South Carolina, and all the other members of the party of "NO"
who have taken stimulus funds and credited themselves
    for being such good leaders.

Do this day after day after day – let Americans know that you
are the one who is responsible for repairing all of the
economic damage, world hate for America, environmental
damage done under Bush and the Republicans when
they controlled Congress, and continue to obstruct your
    good efforts.

Congratualtions – you are a hero to many, and all the votes
cast for you were necessary votes as no other candidate
could possible be more effective than you have been as
    our President.

This world would do alot better if the president would stay out of our lives I know he thinks the government can do better with our money
but we all know that 's bull this economy is driven by the people so let us have our own money and you will see what a real stimulus will do.

Its funny how that the Republican expect the president to magically resolve all the mess that they lefted him including the worst recession since the greate depression.

Noone in his/her right mind wants for the Republicans to take control again.

GO MR PRESIDENT! Its about time you called these hypocrites out. They put this country in one of the biggest nightmares imaginable and they want to criticize? The only thing worst than Bush would be McCain/palin. Our country is blessed right now to have you in charge. Keep up the good work and thank you and your administration for fighting for US. All of US.

what a liar; him and his trite sayings..."...We've got a long way to go..." and "...naysayers..." all words to cover his behind. Yeah, the distance we have to go now, is much further with the unprecedented taxation that this moron is imposing not only on us, but your'd think a Harvard grad (with sealed records of course) would be alittle smarter...and know that cutting expenses is the first step. Taxes will only further hurt and burden the people and that appears to be what Obama wants to do; to create a class of peasantry to be beholding to him....he's the worst thing to ever happen to this country.,,,Jimmy Carter's smiling as his title was taken away..

The only thing that is tearing this nation apart is the oppositon of many people who refuse to accept the fact that the president of the US is no longer a white man. This man has done a great job and has accomplished things that other presidents only talked about for decades. From the tea party to all the negative people who saw this nation declined under the Bush administration, but remain silent. In like manner, remain silent now.

Did the stimulus work? Remember people one third of the stimulus was TAX CUT. One third for Business credit ,TAX CUT and Umployment insurance. One third was for either projects base on who you talking to you might call it pork, project or whatever. Let be real this is where the blue rubbon cutting Republicans try to take credit even when they continue to say the stimulus did not work. People get the facts.

Voting no on the stimulus and then smiling for the photo op when cashing the check...that's what the republicans did. It is well documented. The Wall Street Journal and other "liberal" newspapers have run story after story about it. How do you spell hypocrisy? G O P

Save: Keep up with current events. It was your fearless idiot who said too much information is a threat. Guess you will not have that problem. Obama is the biggest failure since Jimmy Carter. He is the most classless politician and that includes Clinton, Mr cigar himself. He hates any opposition that his why he has the unions. He does what they tell him like a good little boy and they silence people who disagree.

    The stock market is tanking.

The Euro is tanking. And thanks to Obama who opened a credit line to the European Union to bail out all the failed and failing countries, and IN EXCHANGE is taking Euros, we are losing more borrowed money for which we pay interest to China. Now we will have to borrow more money from China to pay the interest since the Euros we got aren't worth as much as they were 5 minutes ago or 5 days ago . . .

George Soros, your broker is calling . . . time to short more Euros while Obama fiddles and the USA burns.

Interesting. Give a speech in a steel mill making tubulars for the oil & gas industry...which he DEMONIZED in the run up to his election.

This on top of calling these workers "rednecks tied to their guns and religion".

It never fails, you can ALWAYS find a democrat. He is the BIGGEST hypocrite in the room.

Because our taxes are higher than they've ever been, right? They've never been higher than they are now!! It's positively stifling! Not when Reagan was president! Not back in the good old 1950s! If we could lower taxes to 1950's levels, we'd all be prosperous like we were back then! Taxes suck! We shouldn't have to pay any! Have a nice day!

  25. Holding Up A Mirror

The $787 B Stimulus package was 1/3 tax cuts ... Republicans lie and call it " a trillion dollars in spending" ... why didn't journalists ever call them on that?

Republicans / Tea Partiers lie that the President has raised taxes when, in fact, under him taxes are lower ... why don't journalists call them on that?

The auto Industry is profitable once again and we taxpayers are getting ALL of our money back .... yet Republicans were against this ... why don't journalists call them on that? So for all that railing about government bailouts ... it seems this administration has competently managed that assistance.

Every body in Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois that works in the steel industry, auto plants, or auto parts suppliers should be voting DEMOCRATIC. Everyone in their families too ... wives ... husbands ... children .... they all owe a great debt of gratitude to President Obama .... seems his policies DID WORK FOR THEM !!
